The
new translation - a Humanae Vitae moment?
John W
The unreasonableness of the new
translation is not unlike the unreasonableness (for many people) of
Humanae Vitae. Both the translation and HV impinge on, (trample on?) very
sensitive areas: liturgical life and sexual life

How
well do we
identify with the poor?
(Questions from a Ewe)
After introducing this topic about poverty,
(Cardinal Dolan) said he had to limit discussion to “14 minutes or the
pasta will not be al dente” and the brothers responded with laughter. This
country has tens of millions of hungry people – many of them children.
Yet, Dolan - who looks like he has never involuntarily skipped a single
meal - limits discussion about the poor to just a few minutes lest it
impact his lunch. The poor are so important that the bishops can mock them
by trivializing discussion about the hungry so that these very well-fed
bishops won't experience a delay or impediment to their meal's quality

The
Disconnect between the People of God and the Hierarchy
Martin Mallon
(Tuesday blogger from Ireland)
In the case of Humanae Vitae, the People of God
ignore and ridicule institutional church teaching, whereas with the new
translation of the Mass they either grin and bear it or leave the church.
This disconnect between the laity and
the hierarchy cannot continue indefinitely, on the level of church
teaching (e.g. HV) and practical decisions (e.g. Mass translations). Is
there a good shepherd out there?

Our
Baptism
Chris McDonnell
(UK Wed blogger)
We celebrate, each year, our birthday, the occasion when we achieved
independence from our Mother’s nurturing care and brought joy to our
family.
Would it not be a good
idea to do the same for our anniversary of Baptism? And if we don’t know
the date, how about finding out?

From Hazel
(UK):
I'm getting so disillusioned with
theology. Using theology you seem to be able to prove anything. Jesus was
a very simple person and when we look at the way John proclaimed his
message, it was simply, "love, love, love all the way." All
these great intellectuals seem to twist and change things with very big
EXCEPTS. Why can't we reach out to other Christians, why can't we even
pray together. When the Pope says "pray alongside" how
ridiculous is that! and how demeaning to others. It is saying they are not
good enough to pray with us! Come back, Blessed Pope John and set
them all right!

Faced
with the miracle of water being changed into
wine, we have two choices: explain
it or embrace it. Seeing 600 liters of best quality
wine, we can sense how extravagant Jesus is when it comes to gifting us with grace

Using poor language
in the liturgy
Andrew
Hamilton
At a time when Christians increasingly experience a
gap between faith and their world, a language of liturgy that is
disconnected from the ways in which people can speak about things that
matter puts unnecessary lead in the Catholic saddlebag.

Mini-reflection
John W
As so many problems afflict our world, our Church, our families, our
hearts.....the more we need wisdom and courage from God. One
of the best ways to download a daily program of such wisdom and courage is
to give a few minutes to the Bible. Saying we
don't have time for or interest in the Bible is like a sick person saying
they don't have time for or interest in a doctor.
May I again warmly invite all readers to use
the reading-reflection-prayer
menu below. DG according to this
website's
December
statistics more than 30 readers have been checking the RRP most days,
with 69 the record so far.
As a way of committing yourself to using this
RRP, you might like to make a resolution to post a small comment on the
RRP each day. No need to use your real name.
No need to write more than a sentence or two.
But the exercise/commitment to posting a
daily comment
will help you get into the habit of giving a few (extra) minutes to the
Bible. And after a few days, I promise you,
such posting will become a pleasure rather than a duty....as you notice
the blessings of wisdom and courage in your life coming from the Heavenly
Server.
Give it a try now on the menu below
