1 Kings 6-7:
Solomon built the temple of the Lord with
finest wood
and many precious materials. The temple took 7 years to build. Solomon also built a palace for
himself.
This took 13 years to build.
Dear God, may all temples and
churches in the world
be places of prayer and peace
My
recording of this reading
Psalm
71: In you, O Lord, I take refuge.
Please hear me and help me. Be a rock where I can take refuge.
Rescue me from people who want to hurt me. It is you, O Lord, who are my hope.
In you I have trusted since I was young. From my mother's womb you have been my help.
My hope has always been in you. Now that I am old, please do not forget me.
Now that my strength fails, do not abandon me. Now that I am old and grey-headed,
may I continue to trust in you and proclaim your help. To you I will sing with the harp.
All day long my tongue will tell of your goodness to me.
Lord, may all elderly people
put their trust and hope in you

Acts
12.1-17 (for Feast of St
James): About this time, King Herod began persecuting
the church. He beheaded the apostle James, brother of
John. He arrested
Peter during Passover time. He put Peter in prison and planned to have him
put on trial and killed after Passover. Each day Peter was in prison, the believers
stormed heaven praying for him. On the night before he was to be put on
trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, fastened with chains, with
more soldiers at the prison entrance. Suddenly Peter's cell was filled with light,
and an angel told him to get up. The chains fell from his hands. The angel
led Peter out of the prison, without the guards knowing what was happening.
Peter then left for another place. Herod was
unable to find him.
Jesus, please help Christians who are in
prison for their faith
Matthew 20.20-28 (for Feast of Saint James): You are a great example to other believers, since it was from you that the word of the Lord spread to many places. Everyone knows how we planted the Good News in your hearts, and how you broke with idolatry and became servants of the living God. Let me remind you how we loved and served you, like loving parents caring for their dear children. Jesus, thank you for the people who nurtured me as a Christian

69-70: Save me, O God, for the waters have risen to
my neck.
I am sinking fast and can't keep afloat much longer. So many people hate me without cause.
I have no more strength to resist them. May my situation not cause anyone to lose
faith in you.
May people realize that it is for your sake that I am taunted. Taunts have broken my heart.
No one shows me any compassion. For food they give me poison.
In my thirst they give me vinegar to drink. Lord, do not hide your face from your servant.

O Lord, do not delay to help me.

persevering hope. When we brought the Good News to you, it came

Matthew
4.12-25: After his time in the desert,
Jesus began preaching the same message as John the Baptist:
"Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand". Jesus called four fishermen to become
"fishers of men":
Peter and his brother Andrew, James and his brother John.
They left their boats and went with Jesus.
Jesus went all round the area of Galilee,
preaching in local prayer halls
and healing all kinds of sick people News spread about the sick being healed,
and soon even people from distant places came to Jesus to be healed.
Jesus, please heal the people I
know who are sick: (...names...)
Recording
Reflection
on the above readings:
Many
times each day we "repent" ...in the sense that we realize we're
making a mistake and so we take action to do things better. e.g. "I'd
better get a move on or I'll be late"; "I wasn't going to take an
umbrella but after listening to the weather report I realize I need an
umbrella"; "I really messed up that job/conversation/meeting. I must
try to do better next time". But Jesus' "repent" goes even
deeper: it involves acknowledging actions that are/were bad/harmful ...for
ourselves/others ....and saying "sorry"...to God and to others....and
trying to avoid those actions in the future.

Civil authorities have the right and duty to adopt clear and firm measures
in support of small producers and differentiated production.
To ensure economic freedom from which all can effectively benefit, restraints occasionally have to be imposed on those possessing greater resources and financial power.
To claim economic freedom while real conditions bar many people from actual access to it, and while possibilities for employment continue to shrink, is to practise a doublespeak which brings politics into disrepute.
Business is a noble vocation, directed to producing wealth and improving our world.
It can be a fruitful source of prosperity for the areas in which it operates, especially if it sees the creation of jobs as an essential part of its service to the common good.

We should not think,
however, that the Gospel message must always be communicated by fixed
formulations learned by heart or by specific words which express an absolutely
invariable content.
This communication takes place in so many different ways that it would be impossible to describe or catalogue them all, and God's people, with all their many gestures and signs, are its collective subject.
If the Gospel is embedded in a culture,
the message is no longer transmitted solely from person to person.

For
a few hours from about 9.30 a.m. yesterday, typhoon signal No. 8 was
hoisted ....causing churches to cancel morning services. But
restaurants and McDonald's stayed open. How come churches have to
"close"? If the reason is legal liability, don't the restaurants also
have liability? And once again the typhoon signal was a storm in a teacup....a
false alarm...almost no rain and not much wind. I guess the weather bureau
forget to tell the Good Lord that No. 8 was up!?

Wisdom 10-19: Wisdom has been present in the world since
the beginning of time.
Wisdom has always been a close friend of good people. Wise people see God in the beauty of creation.
Foolish people are blind to God's presence in creation. Wise people ponder God's goodness and
kindness.
Wise people try to be good and kind to other people.
Lord, please help me see and
imitate your goodness and kindness

you who alone are God. Show me, Lord, your way, and guide my heart

Matthew
13: Jesus told the people another story:
The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field.
An enemy came and sowed weeds in the same field. When the good seed sprouted, so did the weeds.
The man's servants asked if they should get rid of the weeds. "No", said the man, "you might
damage the good seed if you do that.
Let them both grow till harvest time. Then burn the weeds." Then Jesus explained his story:
"I am the sower. The field is the world.
The good seed stands for people of good will.
The weeds stand for people of bad will. The enemy is Satan. At the end of the world, the Son of Man will
send his angels
to sort out the good and the bad people.
Bad people will go to hell. Good people will go to heaven".
Jesus, please protect good
people from bad people

Reflection on the above readings:
Pope Francis' words about the weeds in today's Gospel - good for parents/teachers etc:An evangelizing community is always concerned with fruit, because the Lord wants her to be fruitful. It cares for the grain and does not grow impatient at the weeds. The sower, when he sees weeds sprouting among the grain does not grumble or overreact. He or she finds a way to let the word take flesh in a particular situation and bear fruits of new life, however imperfect or incomplete these may appear. (Joy of the Gospel, No. 24)

In order to continue providing employment, it is
imperative to promote an economy which favours productive diversity and business
creativity.
For example, there is a great variety of small-scale food production systems which feed the greater part of the world's peoples, using a modest amount of land and producing less waste, be it in small agricultural parcels, in orchards and gardens, hunting and wild harvesting or local fishing.
Economies of scale, especially in the agricultural sector, end up forcing smallholders to sell their land or to abandon their traditional crops.
Their attempts to move to other, more diversified, means of production prove fruitless because of the difficulty of linkage with regional and global markets, or because the infrastructure for sales and transport is geared to larger businesses

128: Recording We
were created with a vocation to work.
The goal should not be that technological progress increasingly replace human work, for this would be detrimental to humanity.
Work is a necessity, part of the meaning of life on this earth, a path to growth, human development and personal fulfilment.
Helping the poor financially must always be a provisional solution in the face of pressing needs.
The broader objective should always be to allow them a dignified life through work.
Yet the orientation of the economy has favoured a kind of technological progress in which the costs of production are reduced by laying off workers and replacing them with machines.
This is yet another way in which we can end up working against ourselves.
The loss of jobs also has a negative impact on the economy "through the progressive erosion of social capital: the network of relationships of trust, dependability, and respect for rules, all of which are indispensable for any form of civil coexistence".
In other words, "human costs always include economic costs, and economic dysfunctions always involve human costs".
To stop investing in people, in order to gain greater short-term financial gain, is bad business for society.

At times the message
can be presented directly, at times by way of a personal witness or gesture, or
in a way which the Holy Spirit may suggest in that particular situation.
If it seems prudent and if the circumstances are right, this fraternal and missionary encounter could end with a brief prayer related to the concerns which the person may have expressed.
In this way they will have an
experience of being listened to and understood; they will know that their
particular situation has been placed before God, and that God’s word really
speaks to their lives.

bread.
Life needs God's message". Satan then took Jesus to a high place
and said
"Throw yourself down, since the angels will protect you". Jesus replied
"Presumption is a sin". Then Satan took Jesus to a high mountain
and showed him all the nations of the world. "Worship me and I will give you all these

1 Kings 3: The Lord appeared to King Solomon in a dream
and said "Ask me for anything you'd like." Solomon asked for wisdom: "Give your
servant a heart to understand how to discern between good and evil." God replied: "I now give you a heart full
of wisdom,
wisdom greater than anyone else has ever had. And I also give you what you did not ask for:
riches and glory and long life." Not long after this, two prostitutes came for
judgement:
they lived in the same house and both had given birth to a son,
but one of the babies died during the night.
The mother of the dead baby changed babies
during the same night
and claimed that the living baby was hers. Solomon asked for a sword to cut the
living baby in two
and give half to each mother. The lying woman agreed, but the real mother
said
"No. Don't kill the baby. Give it to the other woman." Solomon then knew the real mother was telling
the truth
and gave the baby to her.
For wisdom such as this, Solomon's reputation spread far.

Parents, treat your children fairly or else they will rebel. Slaves, be obedient and respectful to your
owners.
Offer up your work to the Lord, our Heavenly Owner. Owners, be just and fair to your slaves.
Remember your Heavenly Owner
Jesus, help

Matthew
3.1-17:
About 30 years after
Jesus was born,
a man began preaching repentance,
and baptizing people in the river Jordan. This man was John the
Baptist.
His message was
"Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand". John fulfilled the
prophecy:
"A voice cries in the wilderness: prepare a way for the Lord". John said "I
baptize you with water,
but one is coming who will baptize you with the Holy Spirit".
Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John.
After Jesus was baptized, the heavens opened,
and Jesus saw the Spirit of God coming down on him like a dove. And a voice from heaven
said
"This is my Son, the Beloved.
My favor rests on him".
Jesus,
please help me to prepare your way, like John the Baptist

Reflection
on the above readings:
Colossians
speaks about family life. The family has been under attack many times in history
(e.g. Chairman Mao's commune system) but the present assault by the radical LGBT
movement is as sinister and dangerous as any previous assault. No previous
assault has outlawed the terms "mother", "father",
"son", "daughter". What can we do to protect family life?
Pray ...learn ....and take action. If anyone thinks this issue is not so
serious, please watch some
of these videos - especially no.

127: Recording We
are convinced that "(humanity) is the source, the focus and the aim of all
economic and social life".
Nonetheless, once our human capacity for contemplation and reverence is impaired, it becomes easy for the meaning of work to be misunderstood.
We need to remember that men and women have "the capacity to improve their lot, to further their moral growth and to develop their spiritual endowments".
Work should be the setting for this rich personal growth, where many aspects of life enter into play: creativity, planning for the future, developing our talents, living out our values, relating to others, giving glory to God.
It follows that, in the reality of today's global society, it is essential that "we continue to prioritize the goal of access to steady employment for everyone", no matter the limited interests of business and dubious economic reasoning.

128a: Recording
In
this preaching, which is always respectful and gentle,
the first step is personal dialogue, when the other
person speaks and shares his or her joys, hopes and concerns for loved ones, or
so many other heartfelt needs.
Only afterwards is it possible to bring up God's word, perhaps by reading a Bible verse or relating a story, but always keeping in mind the fundamental message: the personal love of God who became man, who gave himself up for us, who is living and who offers us his salvation and his friendship.
This message has to be shared humbly as a testimony on the
part of one who is always willing to learn, in the awareness that the
message is so rich and so deep that it always exceeds our grasp.

As I twice went out in the heavy rain yesterday (in shorts,
sandals, raincoat top, large umbrella) I couldn't help wondering: how did the
Good Lord get all that water "up there"? And how come it all stays
there until it's ready to drop? What keeps it up there? It's heavy? How come it
stays up there?!
