Yesterday after I spent some thank-you time (for Feb 19, 1973) at the Mariners' Club chapel in Tsim Sha Tsui, I had a chat with the chaplain, Fr Valan SDB ....who told me that the Club and chapel will be closing on Feb 27 ....for 4-5 years...while the site is redeveloped....and that a Catholic chapel will for the next 4 years be housed in premises at 20 Saigon Street, Yau Ma Tei....just near my home....and that other groups are welcome to use the temporary chapel. This is good news on many fronts!
It's now a crime to protest against the murder of unborn babies
When "You Raised Me Up" was among my background songs last night, I checked it on Wikipedia ...which relates when and where the song was performed for the very first time

Sirach 1-3: All wisdom comes from God.
Love for God is the source of wisdom. If you desire wisdom, keep the Lord's
commandments,
in private as well as in public. Keep the commandment to honor your parents.Respect for your father will atone for your sins.
Honor for your mother will gain you blessings. Support your father in his old age.
Even if his mind should fail, show him kindness.
Do not despise him in your health and strength. Be gentle in the way you live your life.
The greater you are, the more humbly you should behave.
Dear
God, please help me always respect and honor my parents
My
recording of this reading
Psalm
96: O sing a new song to the Lord.
Sing to the Lord, all the earth.
O sing to the Lord, bless his name. Proclaim his help day by day.
Tell among the nations his glory,
and his wonders among all the peoples. It was the Lord who made the heavens.
Give the Lord, you families of peoples,
give the Lord glory and honor. Bring an offering and enter his temple.
Worship the Lord in his sacred place. Let the heavens rejoice and earth be glad.
Let the sea and all within it thunder praise. Let the land and all it bears rejoice,
all the trees of the forest shout for joy.
Everyone and everything,
give the Lord glory and honor.
Lord, you are our Creator. We
love and praise you

Acts
1.1-5: Dear Friend of God, in my first book (the
Gospel of Luke) I wrote
about everything Jesus did until the day he was taken up to heaven. For 40 days after his death, he appeared to
his apostles many times, and taught them about the kingdom of God.
He told them to stay in Jerusalem and wait for what the Father had
promised: "You will soon be baptized with the Holy Spirit".
Jesus, please baptize me with the Holy Spirit.
Holy Spirit, increase your influence in my life

Luke
3.1-6:
In the 15th year of the Roman Emperor
Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judaea, Herod was
ruler of Galilee and during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas,
God's message entered the heart of John son of Zechariah in the wilderness.
John went through the whole Jordan River area
proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. This had been foretold by the prophet Isaiah
when he said
"A voice cries in the wilderness:
Prepare a way for the Lord".
Jesus, help us prepare your way, like
John

For Lent:
A priest spied a parishioner enjoying
some tasty smoked sausage on Friday during Lent -- a strict no-no in
the church. The priest, being a pragmatic soul, told the man for his penance he
was to bring a load of lumber to the church to help repair the roof.
The man grumbled, but went off to do his
penance.
He arrived at the church on the next
Friday and proceeded to dump a huge load of sawdust into the parking lot.
"What's this?" the priest
wanted to know. "I told you your penance was a load of lumber, not
sawdust."
The man replied cooly, "Well, if
that sausage I ate was meat, then this sawdust is lumber."

I WISH ALL DEAR READERS A HAPPY LUNAR NEW YEAR OF THE DOG!
Sun Feb 18
It has been really lovely over the past three days of Lunar New Year to see families together everywhere in Hong Kong. What a great custom this is in Chinese culture ....LNY is family time. May the love of Chinese culture for family life help protect family life throughout the world in these troubled times when family life is under attack in so many ways.

c.f. readings for 1st Sun of Lent
Genesis 7-8: Noah's family and many animals went into the big
boat, the "ark".
Then for about 40 days there was heavy rain which caused a great flood.
The ark floated on the water.
The people and animals inside the ark were safe
but people and animals outside the ark died.
When the rain and flood stopped
Noah and his family and the animals went out of the ark.
God made a special agreement (covenant) with Noah
to bless Noah and his
family.
God told Noah that the rainbow would be a sign of their agreement.
Dear God, thank you
for making the rainbow so beautiful
Psalms
24-26: The Lord's is the earth and all its peoples.
It is the Lord who is Creator of the universe. May all hearts open their doors to the Lord.
Let him enter, the king of glory. Lord I hope in you all the day long.
Forgive my sins and help me walk in your truth.

1.9-13: About this time Jesus came from Nazareth in

and the Spirit, like a dove, coming down on him. Then a voice came from heaven
"You are my Son, the Beloved. My favor rests on you". Straight after this the Spirit led Jesus into

During this time Jesus was tempted by Satan.

Isaiah
57-58: Tell my people their faults,
tell the House of Jacob its sins. Tell them that their fasting is a
sham.
Fasting and injustice cannot go together. This is the sort of fast that
pleases the Lord:
breaking unjust fetters,
sharing your bread with the hungry,
sheltering and clothing the homeless poor. Do this and you will find healing
and peace.
Do this and the Lord will give strength to your bones.

O Lord, you are good and forgiving,
full of love to all who call to you. All the nations shall come to adore you
and glorify your name, O Lord,
you who alone are God. Show me, Lord, your way, and guide my heart

5.27-32: As Jesus walked along, he noticed a tax
collector sitting by the customs house. The collector's name was Levi
(Matthew). Jesus said to him "Follow me".
Leaving everything, he got up and went with Jesus. In Jesus' honor Levi
held a banquet in his house. Many tax collectors and social outcasts
were present. The religious leaders complained "Why do
you eat and drink with tax collectors and outcasts?" Jesus replied "It is not those who are
well who need the doctor, but the sick. I have come to call sinners, not
the virtuous, to repentance"
Jesus, thank you for befriending people who
were looked down on.

Lunar New Year's Day!
Yesterday when I did some research before booking an airline ticket for a former prison inmate to return to their own country, I came across this amazing deal: Hong Kong Airlines - Los Angeles return for HK$2,825 ...and see other locations!
I used to check the statistics of this and my other websites each month ....but about 6 months ago that job went into the "not urgent" folder. So yesterday I had a look ....and was most grateful to see that last month v2catholic had 5,375 unique visitors ...not including dear FaceBook friends. Thank you Jesus! Also on the computer front: since my Chrome browser had become very slow, yesterday I uninstalled and again downloaded Chrome...with excellent results....Chrome now much faster.

Genesis 1-2:
God made the world. God made the sun, the moon and the
stars....the whole universe. God said "Let there be light" and there
was light.
God made the earth with all its plants and trees
and animals and fish and birds.
God made the first people.....the first man and first woman. God made them

"Be fruitful, multiply and fill the earth."

We are his people, the sheep of his flock. Go within his gates, giving thanks.

Give thanks to him and bless his name. Indeed, how good is the Lord,

Thu Feb 15- Lunar New Year's Eve
After spending the day at Tai Lam women's prison on Tuesday, I stayed home yesterday to make a start on all the follow up jobs from the visit (...support letters etc) plus trying to start catching up on a backlog of mail and other jobs.
Then late in the afternoon when I checked my mail there was a letter from Lo Wu women's prison to say that a refugee mother and baby are due to be released this morning ....and have nowhere to stay. Last night I rang Lucia (manager of our Mercy Centre on Cheung Chau Island) with the news that she might be looking after a third baby (she already has two baby ex-inmates) ....and she joked about a new name for the centre: Mercy Nursy

Moses called the whole

See, today I set before you life and prosperity,
death and disaster.
If you obey the commandments of the Lord your God,
if you love the Lord your God and follow his ways,
if you keep his commandments, his laws, his customs,
you will live and increase,
and the Lord your God will bless you
in the land which you are entering to make your own.
But if your heart strays, if you refuse to listen,
if you let yourself be drawn into worshipping other gods

I tell you today, you will most certainly perish;
you will not live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan
to enter and possess.

I call heaven and earth to witness against you today:
I set before you life or death, blessing or curse.
Choose life, then, so that you and your descendants
may live in the love of the Lord your God,
obeying his voice, clinging to him.
For in this your life consists,
and on this depends your long stay in the land
which the Lord swore to your fathers
Abraham, Isaac and Jacob he would give them."

Yesterday I was at Tai Lam women's prison from 9am to 6pm ...seeing inmates whose families I met in Latin America last month and visiting other inmates who will be soon at the High Court. The Latin Americans were especially happy about receiving my photos of their families ...posted last Thursday, received yesterday. And the year has got away to a good start: as far as I know, not one person from Africa or Latin America arrested this year at HK airport for drug trafficking. Dear Jesus, please let there be as few as possible this year!

What is the meaning of the word "Lent"?
Valentine's Day: There are so many bad things happening - and they get so much publicity - that it's good to let Valentine's Day remind us that "love makes the world go round" ....only love gives meaning to our lives....when we do something good/loving we feel good ....when we do something bad/unloving we feel bad....the key to improving things for ourselves or our group or our world is ...more love/compassion/care towards others, especially people in need. As in the old song "What the World Needs Now" - at this simple but beautiful YouTube, with lyrics

Joel
1-4: My country has been
invaded. Joy has disappeared from the land. Priests, put on sackcloth and
lament. Proclaim a fast to pray for our nation. Turn to the Lord your God again,
for he is all tenderness and compassion. Call out to the Lord for help.
"Spare your people, Lord!" The Lord replies: "I will save and
rescue you. I will pour out my spirit on all peoples. Every one will prophesy

sinfulness is part of the human condition, part of our DNA. A pure heart create

Matthew 6.1-15:
Jesus said to the crowds:
When you do a good deed, do it for its own sake, not just to get people to
praise you. When you pray, love to pray in private in your heart. Don't be
looking for people to notice and praise you. When you pray, there's no need to
rave on and on. God is not deaf. Prayer is not a lawyer arguing a case. Prayer
is a child speaking with simple trust like this: Our Father in heaven, may
everyone love and honor you. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as in
heaven. Thank you for enough food for today. Forgive us as we forgive others.
Save us in time of trial. Protect us from evil.
Jesus, help me remember that each time I pray "The Our Father", you
are praying with me. "Your Father = my Father = our Father"
