Tues Feb 27

These days, I mean nights, 10 homeless humans sleep at McDonald's in Jordan. Other nearby McDonald's also have overnight guests ... I saw four or five leaving the McD near St Pau's Yau Ma Tei as I passed there early last Sunday morning on the way to Mass. God bless McD's for compassionately doing what no school/church/government centre will do. I continue to hope and pray that Mercy HK will one day have its own canteen/restaurant in the Jordan/YMT area ....a sort of soup kitchen for needy people....with provision for emergency shelter. McMercy?!

Sirach 15-19: Wisdom makes us happy. Foolishness makes us sad. Humility is the pathway to wisdom. We are free to choose good or evil, wisdom or foolishness. To live a good life is something everyone can try to do. If we have done something wrong, we must ask pardon of the Lord. We must turn our back on wrongdoing, and face towards the Lord. Do not indulge in luxurious living. Too much wine and luxury corrupts the heart. Avoid gossip and slander. Be someone who can keep a secret. The way people dress tells you what work they do. The way people walk also tells a lot about them.
Lord, please help me turn my back on wrongdoing. Help me face towards you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 102: O Lord, listen to my prayer in my distress. Do not hide your face from me. For my days are vanishing like smoke, my bones burn away like a fire. I forget to eat my bread. My skin clings to my bones. All day long my foes revile me. Those who hate me use my name as a curse. But you, O Lord, will endure for ever. You will arise and have mercy on Sion. You will hear the groans of the prisoners and free those condemned to die. I pray to you: "Do not take me away before my time has come, you whose days last from age to age.
Lord, please help people who are in great distress

Listen

Acts 2.22-36: Peter said to the crowd "You know that Jesus of Nazareth was a man from God. You know all about the miracles he worked. This same Jesus has been raised from the dead by God. There are many witnesses to his resurrection. Jesus has been taken up to God's right hand. He has received the Holy Spirit from the Father. He has poured out the Holy Spirit on us. Know for sure that Jesus whom you crucified is the Messiah and he is Lord"
Jesus, Messiah Lord, please pour your Holy Spirit into my heart

Listen

Luke 4. 31-37: Jesus went to Capernaum, a town in Galilee. On the Sabbath day he taught in the local prayer hall. In the hall there was a man possessed by a devil which shouted "What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are: the Holy One of God". Jesus said sharply "Be quiet! Come out of him". And the devil left the man without hurting him. People in the hall said "He gives orders to unclean spirits and they obey him". Jesus' reputation continued to spread through the district.
Jesus, please protect my family from evil

Sirach 14: No good will come to a person who persists in evil. No good will come to a person who refuses to help the poor. In prosperity you cannot always be sure who is a true friend, but in adversity you can be sure who is not a friend. Greed causes a personality to wither. The pursuit of wisdom causes a personality to blossom.
Lord, please give me the wisdom to be kind and to avoid greed

My recording of this reading

Psalm 101: My song is of mercy and justice. I sing to you, O Lord. I will try to walk with blameless heart. I will try to give my attention to what is good, not what is bad. People who slander others, people of proud looks, these will not be my friends. People who are good and do good, these will be my friends.
Dear Lord, please help me to avoid bad company

Listen

Acts 2.11-18: When  people heard the apostles' group speaking in many different languages, some said the apostles were drunk. Peter stood up with the Eleven and said to the crowd: These people are not drunk. It's only 9am....too early to drink. What is happening is what God said through the prophet Joel: 'I, the Lord, will pour out my spirit on all peoples. They will prophesy and see visions. I will pour out my spirit on everyone'
Come Holy Spirit, fall afresh on all peoples, all nations

Listen

Luke 4.23-30: People in the prayer hall rejected Jesus. "Who does he think he is?" they asked. "He's just the son of Joseph". Jesus replied "No prophet is ever accepted in his own country". The angry people then took Jesus by force to the edge of the hill on which  Nazareth  was built. They planned to throw him down the cliff. But Jesus escaped from them and went away.
Jesus, please forgive people who reject you. Please help them accept you

Genesis 22: Abraham loved God very dearly. Once when God put him to the test Abraham was even willing to sacrifice his only son Isaac if that was what God wanted. When God saw Abraham's love and obedience God renewed his promise to make Abraham and Isaac's descendants as many as the stars of heaven.
Dear God, please help us love and obey you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 116: I love the Lord for he has heard the cry of my appeal. He turned his ear to me in the day when I called him. They surrounded me, sorrow, distress and the snares of death. I was helpless, so the Lord saved me. Calm down my soul, for the Lord has been good. I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living. How can I repay the Lord for his goodness to me? The cup of salvation I will raise to thank the Lord. O precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful. Lord, you have loosened my bonds. I am your servant.
Thank you, Lord, for all your goodness to me

Listen

Mark 9.1-8: One day Jesus took his disciples Peter, James and John up a high mountain. On the mountain Jesus' whole appearance changed. His face shone like the sun. His clothes were as white as snow. Moses and Elijah appeared and spoke with him. Peter said to Jesus "Lord, how good it is for us to be here!" Then a bright cloud covered them with its shadow. From the cloud came a voice: "This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him." The disciples bowed to the ground. When they got up, they saw only Jesus in his normal appearance.
Jesus, how good it is to spend time with you

Sirach 10-11: As the magistrate is, so will his officials be. As the governor is, so will be the inhabitants of his city. What has dust and ashes to pride itself on? A king today is a corpse tomorrow. Do not praise a person for good looks, nor dislike anyone for appearance. Small among winged creatures is the bee, but nothing is sweeter than her honey.
Lord, please give our world good leaders
(esp'y Congo!)

My recording of this reading

Psalm 100: Cry out with joy to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing for joy. Know that he, the Lord, is God. He made us, we belong to him. We are his people, the sheep of his flock. Go within his gates, giving thanks. Enter his temple with songs of praise. Give thanks to him and bless his name. Indeed, how good is the Lord, eternal his merciful love. He is faithful from age to age.
Dear Lord, please help us to serve you with gladness

Listen

Acts 2.1-4: About ten days after Jesus' ascension to heaven was the Feast of Pentecost. Jesus' 12 apostles, his mother, several other women, and his brothers were together in one room. Suddenly they heard what sounded like a powerful wind. Tongues of fire appeared and came to rest on the head of each of them. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak foreign languages.
Come Holy Spirit, fall afresh on me. Fall afresh on our world

Listen

Luke 4.14-22: Jesus, with the power of the Spirit in him, returned to Galilee. He taught in local prayer halls. His reputation spread. He came to his home town of Nazareth and went to the prayer hall on the Sabbath day as he usually did. He stood up and read these words from the prophet Isaiah: "The spirit of the Lord has been given to me. He has sent me to bring good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to prisoners, to give sight to the blind, to set the downtrodden free". Jesus then sat down and said to the people in the prayer hall "These words from Isaiah are being fulfilled today even as you listen".
Jesus, please help me be more open to the power of your Spirit. O Holy Spirit, please increase your influence in my life

Sirach 8-9: Do not look down on an old person. Old age is our common destiny. Do not discuss your affairs with everyone you meet. Be careful when you ask advice. Do not look lustfully at a woman. Do not stare at the beauty which belongs to someone else.
Lord, please help me control my tongue and my eyes

My recording of this reading

Psalm 99: The Lord is king. He is great in Sion. His power is seen throughout the world. Among his priests were Aaron, Moses and Samuel. They prayed to the Lord and he answered their call. Let peoples everywhere praise his name. He is holy, full of power.
Lord, may all peoples know and love you

Acts 1.15-26: During these days, Peter spoke to a group of about 120 disciples: "As you know, Judas hanged himself after betraying Jesus. We must now choose someone to take Judas' place, someone who has been with us since the time when John was baptizing". Two men were nominated, Joseph and Matthias. After prayer was offered, Matthias was chosen. He was listed as one of the 12 apostles

Luke 4.1-13: Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. For 40 days he ate nothing, and was tempted by the Devil. The Devil said "If you are the Son of God, turn a stone into bread". Jesus replied "Scripture says we do not live on bread alone". The Devil took him to a high place and showed him all the kingdoms of the world. "Worship me and they will all be yours" he said. Jesus replied "Scripture says we must worship only God". Then the Devil took him to the top of the Temple in Jerusalem and said "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down and let the angels protect you". Jesus replied "Scripture says we must not put the Lord our God to the test".  The Devil then left him.
Jesus, protect us from the Devil and all evil

Sirach 6-7: Let your acquaintances be many, but your advisers one in a thousand. A faithful friend is a sure shelter. People who love and honor the Lord, will find a faithful friend. From your youngest days, seek wisdom. If you love listening, you will find wisdom. Stretch out your hand to help poor people. Console people who are sad. Visit the sick. In everything you do, remember the purpose of life and you will avoid evil.
Dear Lord, please help young people to seek wisdom

Psalm 98: Sing a new song to the Lord for he has worked wonders. His right hand has brought salvation. The Lord has made known his salvation. He has shown his justice to the nations. He has remembered his truth and love for the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Shout to the Lord all the earth, ring out your joy. Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp, with the sound of music. Let the sea, the world and all peoples acclaim the King, the Lord. Let the rivers clap their hands and the hills ring out their joy at the presence of the Lord, for he comes to rule the earth. He will rule the world with justice and the peoples with fairness.
Lord, may all peoples in all countries know your love and goodness

Acts 1.12-14: After Jesus went up to heaven from the Mount of Olives, the apostles went back down to Jerusalem, a walk of about half a kilometer. They gathered in an upstairs room which they used as a meeting place. The 11 apostles were Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, Simon and Jude. They spent a long time praying. With them were several women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, and also Jesus' brothers
Jesus, your apostles' group spent special time in prayer preparing for the coming of the Holy Spirit. I now ask them in heaven to pray that the Holy Spirit will increase his influence in my life

Luke 3.15-22: John the Baptist said to the people "I baptize you with water, but someone more powerful than I will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. I am not fit to undo the strap of the powerful one's sandals". Jesus then came and was baptized by John. While Jesus was praying after his baptism, heaven opened and the Holy Spirit came down on him in the shape of a dove. And a voice came from heaven "You are my Son, the Beloved. My favor rests on you".
Jesus, Beloved Son, please baptize me with your Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit, please increase your influence in my life

In the kind company of another O.M.I. I visited Lo Wu women's prison yesterday for about six hours....mainly seeing inmates whose families I had met in South America last month. Inmates very happy to have received my photos of their families and to have heard recorded messages from their families (on Sunday night radio program The Hour of Love). Most of the women are mothers....some even grandmothers. I hope and pray that the flow of drug mules from South America shows a dramatic decline this year.

Sirach 4-5: Water puts out a fire. Almsgiving makes up for sins. Do not refuse to help a poor person. Some people are all talk and no action. Some people are lions at home but sheep in society. Do not give your heart to money. Do not let  passion rule your life. Be quick to listen, but slow to speak. Keep your temper under control.
Lord, please help me to be kind and sincere
My recording of this reading

Psalm 97: The Lord is king, let earth rejoice, the many coastlands be glad. Cloud and darkness are his robes. His throne is justice and goodness. The skies proclaim his goodness. All peoples see his glory. Let those who serve idols be ashamed. Let all creation worship  the Creator. Light shines forth for good people and joy for the upright of heart. Rejoice in the Lord, all good people. Give glory to his holy name.

Acts 1.6-11: On the day he was taken up to heaven, Jesus said to his apostles "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you. Then you will be my witnesses in every part of the world". As he said this, he was lifted up while they watched. A cloud took him from their sight. Then two angels appeared to them and said "Jesus who has been taken up from you, will come back some day in the same way as you have seen him leave".
Jesus, help me be your witness by the way I think and speak and live

Luke 3.10-14: People asked John the Baptist how they should reform their lives. He replied: "If anyone has extra clothing, share with people who have none. If anyone has plenty to eat, share with people who have nothing". Tax collectors asked John what they should do. He replied "Don't cheat anyone". Soldiers asked him "What about us? What must we do?" He replied "No bullying. No extortion. Be content with your pay"
Jesus, what about me? What should I do?

Reflection on the above readings: When we see so many problems in our world ....and we want to help our world be a better place....we too can ask "What about me, what should I do?" And for most of us most of the time, the replies of John the Baptist, above, have relevance
