c.f. readings for Tues of Holy Week. Let's use these readings with Jesus ... they apply to him

Isaiah 46-49: The Lord called me before I was born. From my mother's womb he knew my name. While I was thinking that I had toiled in vain, all the while my cause was with the Lord. The Lord who formed me in the womb and assigned me to rescue his people, that same Lord said to me: "I will make you the light of the nations, so that my salvation will reach to the ends of the earth"
Jesus, please help me understand how these words refer to you

Psalm 71: In you, O Lord, I take refuge. Please hear me and help me. Be a rock where I can take refuge. Rescue me from people who want to hurt me. It is you, O Lord, who are my hope. In you I have trusted since I was young. From my mother's womb you have been my help. My hope has always been in you. Now that I am old, please do not forget me. Now that my strength fails, do not abandon me. To you I will sing with the harp. All day long my tongue will tell of your goodness to me. Jesus, please help me understand how these words refer to you
Recording

Luke 22.63-65: The men who were guarding Jesus mocked him and beat him. They blindfolded him. "Since you are a prophet", they said, "tell us who hit you just then". And they continued heaping insults on him.
Jesus, please stop me from making offensive fun of other people

Recording

Luke 22.66 - 23.12: At daybreak there was a meeting of the religious leaders. Jesus was brought before them. They asked him "Are you the Son of God?". He replied "Yes". They said "We have heard his blasphemy from his own lips". They took him to the Roman governor, Pilate, and made many false accusations against him. Pilate said "I find no case against him". Jesus was then taken to King Herod who made fun of him and sent him back to Pilate.
Jesus, on trial before the leaders, before Herod and before Pilate, please help all prisoners who are on trial today

Recording

Reflection on the above readings: When someone makes fun of us, we react, internally if not externally. Being made fun of is not a pleasant experience. And most of us have to admit to having made fun of others. But human hurt feelings pale into insignificance when compared with what Jesus must have felt. The Creator of the Universe being ridiculed by creatures. A loving and kind parent being ridiculed by a son or daughter .... only a faint image of what happened 2,000 years ago this week.

c.f. Monday of Holy Week.
Isaiah 42: Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom my soul delights. I have endowed him with my spirit that he may bring true justice to the nations. He does not cry out or shout aloud. He does not extinguish the wavering flame. I have called him to serve the cause of right, to open the eyes of the blind, to free captives from prison.
Jesus, Servant of the Father, you are the Saviour of the world.

My recording of this reading

Psalm 27: The Lord is my light and my help, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life, before whom shall I shrink? Though an army encamp against me, even then would I trust. There is one thing I ask of the Lord, for this I long: to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. It is your face, O Lord, that I seek. Hide not your face. I am sure I will see your goodness in the land of the living. Hope in the Lord, hold firm and take heart. Hope in the Lord!
Jesus, may we pray this psalm in time of trial, just as you did
Recording

Acclamation: Praise and honour to you, Lord Jesus Christ! Thank you for showing mercy to us sinners.

John 12.1-8: Six days before the Passover, Jesus went to Bethany, for a dinner at the home of Lazarus, Mary and Martha. Mary put expensive ointment on Jesus' feet. Then she wiped his feet with her hair. Judas Iscariot, the disciple who was going to betray Jesus, said "Why wasn't this ointment sold and the money given to the poor?" He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief. He was in charge of the moneybag and would steal from it. Jesus replied "Leave her alone. She is anticipating and honoring my burial. Besides, the poor will always be with you. But I will soon be gone".
Jesus, may we "anoint your feet" by serving the poor

Recording

Reflection on the above readings: We can wash Jesus' feet ... by serving him in the poor ... by real service of the real poor, not insincere lip-service like that of Judas.

March 25 Palm Sunday

Mt21.09-Nathan-Rd.jpg (110897 bytes)

Yesterday while doing some office work, as a background I started watching this 2017 movie version of the 1678 (!) classic Pilgrim's Progress. At first I found the movie quite boring, thinking to myself "this won't hold people's interest". But then as the movie went along, it got me in, and I finished it quite inspired. It's a great movie for Holy Week, encouraging Christians to keep going despite difficulties. A most relevant message for today's world when our Christian faith is under attack from all sides. One particular line which struck me yesterday was "from now on, your name is not Pilgrim, but Christian" ....c.f. yesterday's Bible reading from Acts..."it was in Antioch that the disciples were first called Christians"! The original book has an anti-Catholic section, but that seems to have been left out of the movie...unless I missed it while I was doing some photocopying.

c.f. readings for Palm Sunday

Isaiah 50: The Lord has opened my ear to hear his message. The Lord has given me words to proclaim his message. For my part, I made no resistance, neither did I turn away. I offered my back to those who struck me, my cheeks to those who tore at my beard. I did not protect my face from insult and spittle. I set my face like flint. The Lord will help me.
Jesus, please help me understand how these words refer to you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 22: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? I call to you for help, but day and night you give no reply. I am a worm and not a man. Everyone who sees me makes fun of me. They taunt  me: "He trusted in the Lord, why doesn't the Lord help him?" Like water I am poured out, my bones no longer connected. My throat is parched, my tongue sticks to my jaws. Many evil people attack me. They make holes in my hands and my feet. They await my death. They divide my clothing among them, they throw a dice for my robe.

Yet I know Lord, that  you are good and holy. I know how you heard the cries of our ancestors and you helped them. It was you who took me from the womb and entrusted me to my mother's breast. To you I was committed from my birth, from my mother's womb you have been my God. Lord, I trust in you even now. I trust you will not scorn my prayer. Even now I praise you as my Creator. May all the nations know and worship you.
Lord, please help people who are in big trouble right now, especially people whose lives are in danger

Listen

Philippians 2.6-11: O Lord, unite us in your love and keep our minds in you. O Lord, unite us in your love and keep our minds in you. Though you were God in state divine you did not cling to what you were. No, you shed your glory's shine so as to live just like a slave. O Lord, unite us in your love and keep our minds in you. You came on earth in human form and you shared our troubled life. A humbler man there never was, even in death obedient. Yes, Lord, death upon a cross, yes, upon a cross.

Therefore are you raised on high and you have the name of names. At that name should bend the knee and tongue confess:  Jesus Christ is LORD. And tongue confess that Jesus Christ is LORD. And tongue confess that Jesus Christ is LORD. To the glory of God the Father

Recording

Mark 11.1-11: Jesus sat on a donkey colt for the trip down the hill from the Mount of Olives into the city of Jerusalem. Big crowds accompanied Jesus down the hill. People spread their clothes on the road as a sign of honor. People cut branches from the trees and waved them singing "Hosanna to the Son of David. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.  Hosanna in the highest!"
Jesus, may you be warmly welcomed by every place and every person in the world

It was
Palm Sunday but because of a sore throat, 5-year-old Johnny stayed home from church with a sitter. When the family returned home, they were carrying several pieces of palm. Johnny asked them what they were for. Isaiah 20-24: Trust in the Lord, not in military might. Israel is going the wrong way in forgetting God's protection. It has no thought for its Maker, no eyes for him who shaped everything long ago. The reason why the earth is without rain and crops
is that people have forgotten their Creator.

Lord, please increase my trust in you, and help all nations remember you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 126: When the Lord delivered Zion from bondage, it seemed like a dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter, on our lips there were songs. What marvels the Lord worked for us. Indeed we were glad. Those who are sowing in tears will sing when they reap. They go out, full of tears, carrying seed for the sowing. They come back, full of song, carrying their sheaves.
Dear God, please bless all people who are sorrowful as they work

Listen

Acts 11.19-26: Some believers went to Antioch in Syria where they preached the Good News of the Lord Jesus to non-Jewish people. Many non-Jewish people became believers. Barnabas, a good man filled with the Holy Spirit, was sent to Antioch in Syria to encourage the new believers to remain faithful to the Lord. Barnabas brought Paul from Tarsus to Antioch. They stayed in Antioch one year, instructing a large number of people. It was at Antioch that the believers were first called "Christians".
Jesus, please help me be a good Christian

Listen

Luke 8.40-56: A prayer hall official came to Jesus and urgently asked him to go to his house, where his 12 year old daughter was dying. As Jesus and his friends were following the official to his home, a woman who had a hemorrhage for 12 years came up behind Jesus and touched his clothing.  Her bleeding stopped at that moment. Jesus knew what  had happened  and said to her
"My daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace". Before  Jesus arrived at the official's house, a messenger arrived and said to the official " Your daughter is dead. Do not trouble the Master any more". Jesus heard these words and said to the official "Do not be afraid. Have faith, and she will be ok". At the house Jesus allowed only Peter, James, John and the girl's parents to go with him inside.
To the mourners Jesus said "Stop crying. She is not dead, but asleep". They laughed at him, since they knew she was dead. Jesus took the little girl by the hand and called to her "Child, get up".  Her spirit returned and she got up at once
Jesus, please increase my faith in your power to heal sick people
and raise the dead
Listen

Reflection on the above readings: The fact that the mourners laughed at Jesus is verification that the girl really was dead...a point of special note to Luke who was a doctor.

Isaiah 13-19: God will punish the world for its evil-doing. Then  peoples' hearts will turn back to their Creator. Then people will no longer worship idols made by human hands. Instead, people will look towards their Creator. The nations will be converted and know the Lord. Egypt and Assyria will be blessed like Israel. The Lord will give his blessing in these words: "Blessed be my people Egypt, blessed be Assyria my creation, and blessed be Israel my heritage".

Acts 10.1-48: Cornelius was a Roman centurion stationed in the town of Caesarea. He and his household prayed, loved God, and helped the local people. One morning Cornelius had a vision that Peter would visit him. In another town, Peter was instructed by the Lord to visit Cornelius. Peter preached God's message to Cornelius and his household. While Peter was speaking, the Holy Spirit came down on all the listeners. Jewish believers  who had accompanied Peter were astonished
that the Holy Spirit would come down on non-Jewish people

Holy Spirit, please come down on all peoples everywhere!

Listen

Luke 8.22-25: Jesus and his disciples got into a boat to cross the lake. Jesus was so tired that he went to sleep in the boat. Then a sudden storm caused big waves to lash the boat. Jesus' friends woke him up and said "Master,  we are sinking". Jesus  ordered the wind and sea to be calm. Straight away the wind and sea were calm. The disciples said to each other "Who is this? Even the wind and sea obey him."
Jesus, please calm the storms in my life

Listen

Reflection on the above Bible readings: Even the silent remembering of the name "Jesus" can give peace to a storm, a  non-peaceful situation.

Yesterday I spent 8 hours at Stanley men's prison....visiting inmates whose families I met in Latin America earlier this year...and other inmates preparing for court cases. I've now finished the Latin American group ...it's taken me two months to get to all of them in 6 different prisons (Lai Chi Kok, Lo Wu, Shek Pik, Stanley, Tai Lam, Tong Fuk), but been a happy experience checking photos etc from Latin America. Please God 2018 will see a drastic drop in the number of Latin American drug mules coming to HK.  (and see below!)

Isaiah 10-12: Woe to legislators who issue unjust laws, laws which exploit poor people. A day of reckoning is coming when unjust legislators will answer to the Lord. The Lord will send a good and just king to rescue the poor. A shoot will spring from the stock of Jesse, on him the spirit of the Lord will rest, a spirit of wisdom and insight, a spirit of counsel and power, a spirit of knowledge, a spirit of love and respect for the Lord. He will judge justly and the land will know peace. The country will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord. Exiles will return to their homeland. Then we will draw water joyfully from the springs of salvation, for great in our midst will be the Holy One of Israel.
Lord, please help governments to do more for poor people

Recording

Psalm 124: "If the Lord had not been on our side", this is Israel's song. If the Lord had not been on our side when people rose against us, then would they have swallowed us alive when they were angry with us. Blessed be the Lord who did not let us become a prey for their teeth. Our life, like a bird, has escaped from the snare of the hunter. Indeed the snare has been broken and we have escaped. Our help is in the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth.
Thank you, Lord, for all the times you have rescued me from trouble

Recording

Acts 9.32-35: Peter visited churches in many areas. When he went to Lydda, he saw a man named Aeneas, a paralytic who had been bed-ridden for 8 years. Peter said to him "Aeneas, Jesus Christ cures you. Get up and fold up your sleeping mat". Aeneas got up immediately. The people of that area who saw him, were converted to the Lord.

Jesus, please help me put your word into practice in my daily life

Isaiah 9: The people that walked in darkness has seen a great light. On those who live in a land of deep shadow, a light has shone. For the yoke that was weighing on them, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken and removed. For there is a child born for us, a son given to us and dominion is laid on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonder-Counselor, Mighty-God,
Eternal-Father, Prince-of-Peace.

Lord, Prince of Peace, thank you for the peace and hope and joy of your friendship and love

My recording of this reading

Psalm 123: To you have I lifted up my eyes, you who dwell in the heavens. My eyes, like the eyes of slaves on the hand of their lords. Like the eyes of a servant on the hand of her mistress, so our eyes are on the Lord our God till he show us mercy. Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy. We are filled with contempt. Indeed all too full is our soul with the scorn of the rich, with the proud man's disdain.
Lord, please protect poor people from being exploited by rich people

Listen

Acts 9.20-31: After a few days, Paul began preaching in the prayer halls that Jesus is the Son of God. People were amazed at Paul's conversion. As time passed, the Jews planned to kill Paul. Paul heard of this and decided to leave the city. The Jews kept watch at the city gates to stop him leaving. Then one night he was able to escape: some disciples lowered him in a basket from the city wall. He went to Jerusalem and began preaching boldly in the name of the Lord. Soon another plot was made to kill him. Therefore the disciples sent him to Tarsus. After this the churches throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria were left in peace. They steadily grew, strengthened by the Holy Spirit
Holy Spirit, please strengthen me, as you strengthened Paul and the first believers

Listen

Luke 8.4-15: One day Jesus told the people this story: A farmer was planting seeds in his field. Some seeds fell on the path. Birds ate them. Some seeds fell on rocky ground. They became sickly plants, without roots, and died. Some seeds fell among thorns. When they became plants, they were choked by the thorns. Some seeds fell on good soil and produced a rich harvest. People who hear God's word without good will are like the seeds on the path. They are easy prey for Satan. People who hear God's word only superficially are like the seeds on rocky ground. As soon as difficulties come, such people easily give up. People who hear God's word with one ear but with the other are listening to the call of greed and pleasure are like the seeds among thorns. Greed kills the word. People who hear God's word with good will and put it into practice are like the good seeds which produced a rich harvest.
Jesus, please help me be good seed!

Frightening YouTube reports: LGBT radical impact on educational institutions (No. 5); LGBT infiltrating churches (No. 6); US corporations massively supporting LGBT agenda (No. 7). What has happened in the US is now starting to happen in other places. Some day our children will ask "why didn't you do more to stop this evil?"
