Tues April 11

Yesterday I attended a most encouraging midday meeting/meal which was a thank you to some special HK people who provided vital logistic help for my recent anti-drug trip to Latin America.

Then I was off to Cheung Chau Island to the Mercy Centre - with six other HK O.M.I.s and with Fr Christian Fini O.M.I. principal of Mazenod College in Melbourne ....with two teachers and 9 wonderful Year 11 students. A happy time - see photos which I'll try to post tomorrow

Isaiah 41-42: The Lord says to his people Israel: "I have chosen you. I have not rejected you. Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Stop being anxious and worried. I am your God. I give you strength and help. Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom my soul delights. I have endowed him with my spirit that he may bring true justice to the nations. He does not cry out or shout aloud. He does not extinguish the wavering flame. I have called him to serve the cause of right, to open the eyes of the blind, to free captives from prison".
Lord, please help me understand how "my servant" is Jesus

Listen

Psalm 135: Praise the name of the Lord, praise him, servants of the Lord. Praise the Lord for he is good. Sing a psalm to his name for he is loving. I know the Lord is great. He does whatever he wills in heaven, on earth, in the seas. Pagan idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands. They have mouths but they cannot speak. They have eyes but they cannot see. Sons of Israel, do not trust in useless idols. Sons of Aaron, trust only in our Creator and Lord.
Dear Lord, please help people who worship idols to know and love you

Listen:

Acts 14.19-27: Some Jewish leaders arrived from Pisidian Antioch and Iconium. They turned the people of Lycaonia against Paul and Barnabas. The people stoned Paul and, thinking he was dead, dragged him outside the town. The disciples gathered around Paul's body. As they did so, he stood up. The next day he and Barnabas went to the town of Derbe. After Derbe, they went back to Pisidian Antioch via Lystra and Iconium.  In each place they encouraged the believers to persevere in the faith, especially during difficult times in their lives. In each place they also appointed elders to be church leaders. Eventually Paul and Barnabas arrived back in Syrian Antioch, where they gave an account of how God had opened the door of faith to non-Jewish people
Jesus, please help me persevere in the faith, like Paul and Barnabas

Listen

Luke 9.1-6: Jesus called the 12 apostles together. He gave them power and authority to cast out devils and to heal sick people.
He sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. So they set out and went from village to village proclaiming the Good News and healing sick people

Jesus,  help me understand how some people have a special gift for healing sick people .... and how I can better pray to heal sick people

Feast of the Annunciation (transferred from 25/3)

Yesterday morning Mass at Yau Ma Tei was followed by Yum Cha with a YMT family, then trip to Sheung Shui for Mass at Lo Wu women's prison, then usual Sunday night gathering for poor at YMT with two groups of special guests: a band of young people from the Mainland and a group of students and staff from Mazenod College in Melbourne....after which the two groups had a enjoyable meal together. c.f. readings for March 25, Annunciation

Isaiah 7: A foreign king and his army attacked Jerusalem. The king of Judah and his people were full of fear. God told Isaiah to say to the king of Judah: "Keep calm, have no fear. You will not be defeated. The Lord himself gives you a sign of his protection: a maiden is with child and will give birth to a son whom she will call God-with-us."
Lord,  please help me understand how you are God-with-me every day

My recording of this reading

Psalm 40: You do not ask for sacrifice and offerings, but an open ear. You do not ask for holocaust and victim. Instead, here am I. In the scroll of the book it stands written that I should do your will. My God, I delight in your law in the depth of my heart. Your justice I have proclaimed in the great assembly. My lips I have not sealed, you know it, O Lord. I have not hidden your justice in my heart, but declared your faithful help. I have not hidden your love and your truth from the great assembly.
Here I am, Lord. I come to do your will

Luke 1.26-38 (a) In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to the town of Nazareth in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary who was betrothed to a man named Joseph. The angel said to her "Mary, Rejoice! You have been greatly blessed by God. You are to conceive and have a son whom you must name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of God". Mary said to the angel, "How can this happen since I am a virgin?"
Recording

Luke 1.26-38 (b) The angel replied "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will specially bless you. Know this too: your cousin Elizabeth has, in her old age, conceived a son, and is now in her sixth  month". "I am the handmaid of the Lord", said Mary, "let what you have said, be done for me". And the angel left her.
God the Son, thank you for becoming a baby in Mary's womb

Sun April 8

After the usual first Saturday Mass at Queen Elizabeth Hospital yesterday afternoon I had an encouraging meeting with the kind Canadian editor of this website's FB page (in HK for a family function) before evening Mass at St Paul's Yau Ma Tei. Suitable anywhere, any occasion, any necessity, any happy/sad time - the words of Thomas to Jesus in today's Gospel: "My Lord and my God". Guaranteed to bring peace to any situation.

c.f. readings for Easter 2

Acts 4.32-35: The apostles continued to witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus with great power. The whole group of believers was united, heart and soul. They willingly shared everything they had with people who were in need. Joseph was a Temple minister who had been born in Cyprus. He sold a field he owned, and gave the proceeds to the apostles. The apostles called him "Barnabas" ("Son of Encouragement")
Jesus, help me to be more caring and sharing

My recording of this reading

Psalm 118: Give thanks to the Lord for he is good. His love has no end. Let the sons of Israel say: "His love has no end." Let those who honor the Lord say: "His love has no end." It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes. I was falling, falling, falling, but the Lord was my helper. The Lord is my strength and my song. He is my saviour. The Lord's right hand has triumphed. His right hand has raised me up. I shall not die, I shall live
and recount all his deeds. The stone which the builders rejected has become the corner stone. This is the work of the Lord, a marvel in our eyes. This day was made by the Lord. We rejoice and are glad.

Lord, we give thanks to you, for you are good.  Your love has no end

Listen

1 John 4.20 - 5.13: Anyone who says "I love God" but hates his brother, is a liar. A man who does not love the brother he can see cannot love God whom he has never seen. Who can overcome the world? Only the person who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. You who believe in the Son of God have eternal life.
Jesus, I believe you are the Son of God

John 20.21-29: That same Sunday evening, the doors were locked in the room where the disciples had gathered, for fear of the religious leaders. But Jesus appeared and stood before them, saying "Peace be with you". He showed them his hands and his side and said "As the Father sent me, so I am sending you". Then he breathed on them, saying "Receive the Holy Spirit". Thomas, one of the 12 apostles, was not there that night. When the other disciples said they had seen the Lord, he replied "Unless I see and touch his wounded body, I refuse to believe". Eight days later, the group was again in the same house, with the doors locked. This time Thomas was with them. Jesus again appeared and stood before them saying "Peace be with you". Then he said to Thomas "Put your hand into my side. Doubt no longer, but believe".  Thomas replied "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said "You believe because you can see me. Blessed are those who have not seen me and yet believe"
Jesus, my Lord and my God, I believe in you. Help me live and grow and die in your friendship

Isaiah 36-40: "Console my people, console them" says the Lord. A voice cries out "Prepare in the wilderness a way for the Lord. Make a straight highway for our God across every desert. Let every valley be filled in, every mountain and hill be laid low. Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all people will see the Lord's glory." Go up on a high mountain, joyful messenger to Zion. Shout with a loud voice, joyful messenger to Jerusalem. Shout to the towns of Judah "Here is your God".
My recording of this reading

Psalm 134: O come, bless the Lord, all you who serve the Lord, who stand in the house of the Lord, in the courts of the house of our God. Lift up your hands to heaven and bless the Lord through the night. May the Lord bless you from Zion, he who made both heaven and earth.
Lord, please  protect my family tonight and every night

Listen

Acts 14.8-18: In Lycaonia, there was a man who had never walked in his life, because his feet were crippled from birth. As he listened to Paul preaching, Paul noticed him and saw that he had the faith to be cured. Paul said in a loud voice "Get to your feet! Stand up!" The crippled man jumped up and began to walk. The local people thought that Paul and Barnabas must be gods, so Paul said to them "We are only human beings like you. We have come with Good News to help you turn from empty idols to the living God who made heaven and earth. It is he who sends you rain and who makes your crops grow".
Jesus, help people turn away from idol worship

Listen

Matthew 28.16-20: The 11 apostles went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had arranged to meet them. When they saw him they fell down before him in worship. Jesus said to them "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations. Baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Teach them to understand and live according to my words. And know that I am with you always, yes, to the end of time".

Isaiah 35: Strengthen all weary hands, steady all trembling knees, and say to all faint hearts "Courage! Do not be afraid. The Lord is coming to save you." Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, the ears of the deaf unsealed. Then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongues of the dumb sing for joy. Exiles will return to Zion shouting for joy, everlasting joy on their faces. Joy and gladness will go with them. Sorrow and lament will be ended.
Lord, please heal the friends I know who are blind, deaf, dumb....

My recording of this reading

Psalm 133: How good and how pleasant it is when people live in unity. It is like precious oil upon the head, running down upon the beard. It is like the dew of Hermon which falls on the heights of Zion. For there the Lord gives his blessing, life for ever.
Dear Lord, please help all the peoples of the world  to live as one family, in unity

Acts 14.1-7: Paul and Barnabas went to another city, Iconium. As usual, their first stop was the local Jewish prayer hall. Many Jews became believers, as did many non-Jewish people. During their stay in Iconium, Paul and Barnabas preached fearlessly for the Lord. And the Lord supported them by allowing miracles to be worked by them. But their success again aroused opposition, and they were in danger of being stoned. So they went to Lycaonia and preached the Good News there
Jesus, please help Gospel workers by allowing miracles to be worked by them

John 21.1-14Jesus also appeared to the disciples at the Sea of Galilee, when Peter, John and 5 other disciples were fishing. They had spent all night in their boat, but had caught nothing. In the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, though the disciples did not recognize him. He called out "Lower your net on the right side of the boat". Immediately the net filled with fish. John realized that the man on the shore was Jesus. John said to Peter "It is the Lord", and they returned to the shore, which was only about 100 meters away. The net had 153 big fish, but did not break. Jesus had prepared some bread. He also had some fish cooking on a charcoal fire. He said "Come and have breakfast".
Jesus, Risen Lord, without you, no fish. With you, 153 fish. Please help me be more aware of your presence in my life

Reflection on the above Bible readings: More awareness of the Risen Jesus in our lives means ....more ...fish!

I'm trying to think of a joke about fish ...to go with Gospel, above....only one that comes to mind is the one about the old man fishing from a jetty near a swimming area...just near a sign saying "No Fishing Allowed Here". Isaiah 31-32: How foolish are people who trust in armaments but never bother to consult the Lord. Help and salvation come from the Lord who says: "Once more I will send the good rain. Then shall the wilderness be fertile land and fertile land will become a forest. In the wilderness justice will come to live and integrity in the fertile land. Integrity will bring peace, and justice will bring security. My people will live in a peaceful home, in safe houses, in quiet dwellings."

Psalm 130: Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord. Lord, hear my voice. If you, O Lord, should  record our guilt, Lord, who would survive? But with you is found forgiveness. For this we revere you. My soul is waiting for the Lord. I count on his word. My soul is longing for the Lord more than watchman for the daybreak. With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption. Israel indeed he will redeem from all its  iniquity.
Lord, please forgive me for all the bad things I have done

Recording

Acts 13.13-52: Paul and Barnabas went to another Antioch, Antioch in Pisidia. Out of jealousy, the local Jewish leaders there stopped Paul from preaching to the Jewish community. Paul and Barnabas then turned their attention to non-Jewish people, and so the word of the Lord spread through the whole countryside. But the Jewish leaders kept up their campaign, and had Paul and Barnabas expelled from Pisidia.
Jesus, please don't let Gospel workers be expelled

Luke 24.36-49: The disciples were still talking about what had happened when suddenly Jesus himself stood among them. At first they were terrified and thought they were seeing a ghost. But he said "Look at my hands and feet. Yes, it is I indeed. Touch me and see for yourselves. A ghost has no flesh and bones as you can see I have". Their fear turned to joy but they still couldn't believe what they were seeing. So he asked them for something to eat, and they gave him some grilled fish which he ate in front of them. Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and he said "So you see how it is written that the Christ would suffer, and on the third day rise from the dead. And that in his name repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached to all the nations. Soon I will send down to you what the Father promised (the Holy Spirit). Stay in Jerusalem until you are clothed with this power from on high"

Isaiah 28-30:  God says: "I will punish priests and prophets who mislead the people. Their mouths utter lies. They honor me only with lip-service while their hearts are far from me. Religion has become just a mental exercise, just a series of human laws." The Lord appeals to everyone: trust in him and cease to do evil. Salvation is found in conversion and tranquility. Strength is found in complete trust in the Lord.
Lord, please help us honor you with our hearts as well as our heads

My recording of this reading

Psalm 128: O blessed are those who love the Lord and walk in his ways. By the labor of your hands you shall eat. You will be happy and prosper: your wife like a fruitful vine in the heart of your house; your children like shoots of the olive, around your table. Indeed thus shall be blessed the people who love and honor the Lord. May the Lord bless you from Zion all the days of your life. May you see your children's children in a happy Jerusalem! On Israel, peace!
Dear Lord, may all married people live to see their children's children

Listen

Acts 13.1-3: In the church at Antioch in Syria, the following were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon, Lucius, Manaen and Paul. One day while they were offering worship to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said "I want Barnabas and Paul set apart for the work to which I have called them". After fasting and prayer, the leaders prayed for Barnabas and Paul with the laying on of hands and sent them off on a missionary journey
Holy Spirit, help me be attentive to your guidance

Listen

Luke 24.1-11: On Sunday morning, at daybreak, the women went to the tomb with the spices they had prepared. They found that the large stone which had been put at the tomb's entrance had been rolled away. They entered the tomb and found that the body of Jesus was not there. Suddenly two men in brilliant clothes appeared at their side. The men said to them "Why look among the dead for someone who is alive? He is not here. He has risen, just as he said he would". The women told all this to the eleven apostles. But the apostles did not believe them.
Jesus,  increase my faith in your resurrection

Reflection on the above readings: A prominent theme in Luke's Gospel is concern for women. So it's no surprise to find that only Luke records that the apostles did not believe the women.
