Pope's new letter - "Rejoice and Be Glad":
51. When God speaks to Abraham, he tells him: "I am God Almighty, walk before me, and be blameless" (Gen 17:1). In order to be blameless, as he would have us, we need to live humbly in his presence, cloaked in his glory; we need to walk in union with him, recognizing his constant love in our lives. We need to lose our fear before that presence which can only be for our good. God is the Father who gave us life and loves us greatly. Once we accept him, and stop trying to live our lives without him, the anguish of loneliness will disappear (cf. Ps 139:23-24). In this way we will know the pleasing and perfect will of the Lord (cf. Rom 12:1-2) and allow him to mould us like a potter (cf. Is 29:16). So often we say that God dwells in us, but it is better to say that we dwell in him, that he enables us to dwell in his light and love. He is our temple; we ask to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of our life (cf. Ps 27:4). "For one day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere" (Ps 84:10). In him is our holiness.

Daniel 7: Once when Daniel was asleep, he had a vision of heaven: "Thrones were put in place and one of great age took his seat. His robe was white as snow, his hair as pure as wool. A thousand thousand waited on him, ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him. Then coming on the clouds of heaven was one like a son of man. On him was conferred glory and kingship,
and people of all nations became his servants. His kingship is eternal. His empire will never be destroyed."
Jesus, please help me understand that you are the "Son of Man"  whose kingship is eternal

My recording of this reading

Psalm 46: (c.f. famous hymn by Martin Luther "A Mighty Fortress is our God",  and also the hymn "Be Still and Know that I am God")
God is for us a refuge and strength, in time of distress he is a helper close at hand. Therefore we shall not fear even though the earth should rock, even though the mountains fall into the sea. The Lord of hosts is with us. The God of Jacob is our stronghold. Come and consider the works of the Lord and always remember his words: "Be still and know that I am God".
Lord, help us to be more aware of your presence, especially when we are in trouble

Romans 3.20-24: Only by faith in Jesus can we really become holy in God's sight. This faith is a free gift of God's grace to us. Only when Jesus is in our hearts, can our hearts become holy in God's sight.
Jesus, please live in my heart! May you live in me, and I in you

Listen

Luke 22.54-62: The men who arrested Jesus took him to the home of the main religious leader. Peter followed at a distance. As Peter sat by a fire in the courtyard, a servant-girl said "This man was with Jesus".  Peter replied "Woman I do not know him". A little while later, another person said "You are one of them". Peter replied "I am not". About an hour later, a man said "He was certainly with them. He is from Galilee". Peter replied "I do not know what you are talking about". While he was still speaking, a rooster crowed, and the Lord looked straight at Peter, and Peter remembered what the Lord had said, "Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times". Peter went outside and cried bitterly.
Jesus, don't let me ever deny that I know you

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: Like Daniel in the first reading, Peter also had a glimpse of the glory of the Son of Man (when Jesus was transfigured on the mountain) ... but ....he still failed the courtyard test.

After two meetings yesterday afternoon I went to Tsim Sha Tsui to change some US dollars handed out to me by inmates for me to send to their families....and I arrived about 7pm...just when the Ramadan fast was finishing for the day....so almost all the money changers had signs to the effect "Back after prayers". An Indian money changer came to the rescue....

Pope's new letter - "Rejoice and Be Glad":
50. Ultimately, the lack of a heartfelt and prayerful acknowledgment of our limitations prevents grace from working more effectively within us, for no room is left for bringing about the potential good that is part of a sincere and genuine journey of growth.[51] Grace, precisely because it builds on nature, does not make us superhuman all at once. That kind of thinking would show too much confidence in our own abilities. Underneath our orthodoxy, our attitudes might not correspond to our talk about the need for grace, and in specific situations we can end up putting little trust in it. Unless we can acknowledge our concrete and limited situation, we will not be able to see the real and possible steps that the Lord demands of us at every moment, once we are attracted and empowered by his gift. Grace acts in history; ordinarily it takes hold of us and transforms us progressively.[52] If we reject this historical and progressive reality, we can actually refuse and block grace, even as we extol it by our words.

Daniel 4-6: Some of the king's officials were jealous of Daniel, so they had him arrested on a false charge and condemned to death. One evening, Daniel was put into a cave of lions. The mouth of the cave was sealed with a great stone. In the cave Daniel prayed to God for help, and God protected Daniel. The next morning the stone was removed. Daniel walked out unharmed. The king then ordered Daniel's accusers to be put into the cave. The lions immediately ate them. Thank you, Lord, for protecting Daniel. Thank you, Lord, for so often protecting me
My recording of this reading

Psalms 42-45: Like a deer that longs for running streams, so my soul is longing for you, my God. My soul is thirsting for you, the God of my life. I think of you all the time, here in my land of exile. People make fun of us here in exile. They taunt us saying "Where is your God?" Yet no matter what happens we will hope in you, for you are our saviour and our God. No matter where we are or what happens to us, our hearts will long for you, like a bride longing for her groom.
Lord, no matter what happens, may I always hope in you

Listen

Romans 2.13-29: People become holy in God's sight by doing what is right. Listening to God's Law is not enough. We have to put it into practice in our lives. Non-Jewish people who follow a good conscience and do what is right, have God's Law engraved on their hearts. What matters is not circumcision of the body, but circumcision of the heart. The real Jew is one who is a Jew in his heart
Jesus, help me to love you with all my heart. May my love for you not be just something external, but something real, in my heart

Luke 22.47-53: While Jesus was  speaking, a group of men arrived, led by Judas. One of Jesus' apostles used his sword to cut off the right ear of one of the men sent to arrest Jesus. Jesus told his apostles not to use their swords. Then touching the man's ear, he healed him. Jesus said to the men arresting him "This is your hour. This is the reign of darkness".
Jesus, you gave up your freedom for our salvation

Reflection on the above readings: Peter was willing to use force, force that would seriously injure, to save Jesus. But Jesus would not condone the use of force. In most situations, the use of force should always be a last resort.

Feastday of Body and Blood of Jesus

What a great article!
You have heard it said: Visit the imprisoned. But what about their guards?

Next Sunday afternoon, June 10, I'm due to travel to Kuala Lumpur where I hope to do several jobs, one of which is to visit a Kenyan woman facing the death penalty for drug trafficking. Due to go to Brisbane June 14 for Iona College 60th Anniversary functions....due back HK night of June 22. Thank you for a prayer.

Pope's new letter - "Rejoice and Be Glad":
49. Those who yield to this pelagian or semi-pelagian mindset, even though they speak warmly of God's grace, "ultimately trust only in their own powers and feel superior to others because they observe certain rules or remain intransigently faithful to a particular Catholic style".[46] When some of them tell the weak that all things can be accomplished with God's grace, deep down they tend to give the idea that all things are possible by the human will, as if it were something pure, perfect, all-powerful, to which grace is then added. They fail to realize that "not everyone can do everything",[47] and that in this life human weaknesses are not healed completely and once for all by grace.[48] In every case, as Saint Augustine taught, God commands you to do what you can and to ask for what you cannot,[49] and indeed to pray to him humbly: "Grant what you command, and command what you will".[50]

Exodus 12: God said to Moses and Aaron "From now on, this month is to be the first month of your year. On the evening of the 14th day of this month each family must kill and eat a one year old male sheep or goat. Some of its blood must be put on your front door. You must eat it in a hurry, with a belt round your waist, sandals on your feet and a staff in your hand. This night I will go through the land of Egypt and strike every first-born Egyptian. But when I see the blood on your doors I shall PASS OVER your homes and you shall be unharmed.
My recording of this reading

Psalm 116: I love the Lord for he has heard the cry of my appeal. He turned his ear to me in the day when I called him. They surrounded me, sorrow, distress and the snares of death. I was helpless, so the Lord saved me. Calm down my soul, for the Lord has been good. I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living. How can I repay the Lord for his goodness to me? The cup of salvation I will raise to thank the Lord. O precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful. Lord, you have loosened my bonds. I am your servant.
Thank you, Lord, for all your goodness to me

Hebrews 8.9 - 9.14: Jesus' priesthood is part of the new covenant predicted in the Scriptures: "See, the days are coming - it is the Lord who speaks - when I will establish a new covenant with the House of Israel". Jesus has come as High Priest of all the blessings that were predicted would be part of the new covenant. He has offered not the blood of animals like priests of the old covenant, but his own blood, by which he won our redemption. His blood can purify our inner self from dead actions, to help us in our life of dedication to the living God
Jesus, by your precious
blood, purify my heart and protect me

Mark 14.17-25: On Passover Eve, Jesus ate a last meal with his apostles. While they were eating, Jesus told them he knew he would be betrayed by one of them. He told Judas he knew he was the betrayer. Then Jesus took some bread, blessed it and gave it to his apostles saying "This is my body". Then he took a cup of wine, blessed it and gave it to them saying "This is my blood"

Sat June 2

Two sides of the coin: Earlier this week a woman prisoner from Africa said to me "Why do they keep us in prison so long? We are mothers ...we have children who need us". The same day, at a case for which I helped an inmate get a discount for helping my anti-drug campaign, a kind but insightful woman judge used words like these "it's sad for you, a mother to go to prison for 9 years, but the drugs you brought to HK would have caused enormous pain and suffering to many mothers and their children"

Pope's new letter - "Rejoice and Be Glad":
48. The same power that the gnostics attributed to the intellect, others now began to attribute to the human will, to personal effort. This was the case with the pelagians and semi-pelagians. Now it was not intelligence that took the place of mystery and grace, but our human will. It was forgotten that everything “\"depends not on human will or exertion, but on God who shows mercy" (Rom 9:16) and that "he first loved us" (cf. 1 Jn 4:19).

Daniel 2-3: The king of Babylon had a dream which none of his wise men could interpret. God enabled Daniel to understand the dream. The king then promoted Daniel and his friends to important jobs. Some time after this, the king built a golden statue and everyone was commanded to adore it. The Jewish exiles, including Daniel and his friends, refused to adore the statue. Daniel and his friends were condemned to be burnt to death in a big furnace. But God protected the four young  men and they walked around unhurt in the flames. They praised God for his wonderful protection and called on all creatures to adore the one true God. When the king saw this miracle take place he cancelled the law for Jews to be killed.

Psalm 41: Blessed the person who helps the poor and the weak. He himself will be helped by the Lord when he is sick and in trouble. The Lord will help him on his bed of pain. The Lord will bring him back from sickness to health.

Romans 1.26-32: Refusing to honor the Creator is why people's behaviour went bad: why women turned from natural intercourse to unnatural practices, and why men gave up natural intercourse to be consumed with passion for each other, men doing shameless things with men, and getting an appropriate reward for their perversion. Since people refused to honor God, they have dishonored themselves.

Luke 22.39-46: After the Passover meal, Jesus and his disciples went to the Mount of Olives. Jesus said to them "Pray for protection in time of trial". Then he went apart by himself, about 40 meters away,  knelt down and prayed "Father, save me from this time of trial. But let your will, not mine, be done". An angel from heaven appeared to him to give him strength. His agony was so great that his sweat became drops of blood falling to the ground. When he got up and went to the disciples, he found them sleeping - so overcome were they with sorrow.
Jesus, please help me to pray "not my will, but yours be done"

Fri June 1

At the High Court yesterday morning a woman from South America was sentenced to 9 years and 8 months (after cuts) for drug trafficking to HK. Her 9.8 included a six month reduction for helping my anti-drug campaign...thanks to a kind judge. Much disparity here ....other judges lately have not given any campaign discounts....not fair.

I was not in court yesterday ...I was at Lo Wu women's prison...for 7 hours ...in 35 degree heat....and when I came home to join the usual Temple Street canteen Thursday night meal for homeless people all I had to eat was ....a super-helping ...of ...beautiful ....cold ...water-melon!

Pope's new letter - "Rejoice and Be Glad":
47. Gnosticism gave way to another heresy, likewise present in our day. As time passed, many came to realize that it is not knowledge that betters us or makes us saints, but the kind of life we lead. But this subtly led back to the old error of the gnostics, which was simply transformed rather than eliminated.

Daniel 1: There were many Israelite exiles in Babylon. The king of Babylon wanted some of them to work in his palace. The king told his officials to select 4 young men and train them in local customs and culture. The 4 selected were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. God blessed these 4 with great wisdom. God also blessed Daniel with the gift of understanding dreams. When the 4 began work for the king, they were much wiser than all the local officials.

Psalm 40: I waited, I waited for the Lord and he stooped down to me. He heard my cry. He saved me from distress. He put fresh hope into my heart. How many, O Lord my God, are the times you have helped me. They are too many for me to describe. My God, in the depth of my heart I delight in your law. You do not want external offerings. Romans 1.18-25: Everyone needs the Good News, especially people who put truth in prison. Ever since the world began, people could know God by seeing the wonders of creation. But even though they saw the beauty of creation, they refused to honor the Creator. They replaced honor for God with honor for images of men and beasts. They worshipped a god they made instead of God who made them

Pope's new letter - "Rejoice and Be Glad":
46.
When Saint Francis of Assisi saw that some of his disciples were engaged in teaching, he wanted to avoid the temptation to gnosticism. He wrote to Saint Anthony of Padua: "I am pleased that you teach sacred theology to the brothers, provided that you do not extinguish the spirit of prayer and devotion during study of this kind".[43] Francis recognized the temptation to turn the Christian experience into a set of intellectual exercises that distance us from the freshness of the Gospel. Saint Bonaventure, on the other hand, pointed out that true Christian wisdom can never be separated from mercy towards our neighbour: "The greatest possible wisdom is to share fruitfully what we have to give. Even as mercy is the companion of wisdom, avarice is its enemy".[44] "There are activities that, united to contemplation, do not prevent the latter, but rather facilitate it, such as works of mercy and devotion".[45]

c.f. readings for Feast of Visitation of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth

Zephaniah 3.14-18: Shout for joy, daughter of Zion, Israel, shout aloud! Rejoice, exult with all your heart, daughter of Jerusalem! The Lord has repealed your sentence; he has driven your enemies away. The Lord, the king of Israel, is in your midst; you have no more evil to fear. When that day comes, word will come to Jerusalem: Zion, have no fear, do not let your hands fall limp. The Lord your God is in your midst, a victorious warrior. He will exult with joy over you, he will renew you by his love; he will dance with shouts of joy for you as on a day of festival.
My recording of this reading

Isaiah 12: Truly, God is my salvation, I trust, I shall not fear. For the Lord is my strength, my song, he became my saviour. With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. Give thanks to the Lord, give praise to his name! Make his mighty deeds known to the peoples! Declare the greatness of his name. Sing a psalm to the Lord for he has done glorious deeds; make them known to all the earth! People of Zion, sing and shout for joy, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.

Romans 12.9-13: Do not let your love be superficial, but sincerely prefer good to evil. Have a family love for each other, and a profound respect for each other. Persevere in your love for the Lord and your service of the Lord. Hope will make you cheerful. Do not give up when trials come. Keep on praying. Help people who are in need. Make hospitality your special care.

Luke 1.39-45: As soon as she could and as quickly as she could, Mary went to Elizabeth's home in the hills near Jerusalem. Elizabeth said to Mary "Of all women, you are the most blessed, and blessed is the baby in your womb. Why should I be honored with a visit from the mother of my Lord?  Blessed are you for believing God's promise"
Mary, blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus

Wed May 30

Yesterday after a morning at the desk, mainly working on an affidavit for a coming High Court case, I went in the early afternoon to the High Court oaths office to get my affidavit stamped, then I delivered it to a nearby legal firm's office, then met the Malaysian media team for a final session, then went to the HKMA office in East Tsim Sha Tsui to register a prison inmate for a study course, then after a brief fishing session at Chung King Mansion I slowly walked home in the 34 degree heat. No trouble sleeping last night.

45. A dangerous confusion can arise. We can think that because we know something, or are able to explain it in certain terms, we are already saints, perfect and better than the "ignorant masses". Saint John Paul II warned of the temptation on the part of those in the Church who are more highly educated "to feel somehow superior to other members of the faithful".[41] In point of fact, what we think we know should always motivate us to respond more fully to God's love. Indeed, "you learn so as to live: theology and holiness are inseparable".[42]

The Book Blog:   4 readings + recordings
Comments welcome here
Readings are from Simple Bible

Ezekiel 35-48: Through Ezekiel, God kept calling on the people to turn from their sins and remember their Creator. God said he would bring back Israel's exiles to their homeland. He would give them a new start in life, like a skeleton coming back to life. God said the people would re-build the Temple in Jerusalem, and religious practice would once again flourish. The people would once again remember God. The people would once again be blessed by the Lord.
Lord, please help nations which have forgotten you to come back to you

My recording of this reading

Psalms 38-39: O Lord, please forgive my sins and heal me. Heal my body which is sick because of my sins. Protect me, Lord, from those who gloat over me now that I am brought low and unable to help myself. Lord, you have shown me how short a time I have on earth. Lord, give me wisdom of heart to live my life better.
Lord, help us understand the meaning of life

Romans 1.8-16: I thank God for the way people everywhere speak of your faith. I never fail to mention you in my prayers.
I pray for the opportunity to visit you if God wills. I long to see you to encourage you and to be encouraged by you. For I am not ashamed of the Good News. It is the power of God saving everyone who has faith, Jews first then everyone else.

Jesus, help me to pray for others the way Paul prayed for others

Luke 22.12-20: On the evening of the Passover feast, Jesus and his apostles ate the Passover Lamb in a large upper room furnished with couches. While they were having the meal, Jesus took some bread, and when he had given thanks, broke it and gave it to his apostles saying: "This is my body. Do this in memory of me". Then he took a cup of wine and said "This cup is the new covenant in my blood which will be poured out for you".
Jesus, please help me understand how your Body and Blood are present in a Communion service

Reflection on the above readings: Next Sunday, the Feast of Corpus Christi, will use Bible readings which have the theme of "blood" ....so today's Gospel can prepare our hearts to start thinking about the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ

Frightening YouTube reports: LGBT radical impact on educational institutions (No. 5); LGBT infiltrating churches (No. 6); US corporations massively supporting LGBT agenda (No. 7). What has happened in the US is now starting to happen in other places. Some day our children will ask "why didn't you do more to stop this evil?"
