Tues June 19

Hello one more time from Iona College in Brisbane. Yesterday morning I had my annual skin-check up ....all clear Thank Goodness. In the afternoon I did something I can't remember ever doing before: I walked from Iona to the Wynnum waterfront and nearby Guardian Angels church, then after a cup of tea at a Wynnum restaurant with a fellow Iona foundation student I walked back to Iona. Only about 3 hours of walking, but unusual in that people usually drive everywhere here. Encouraging me to walk was the beautiful sunny winter weather ....too good to stay inside on a day like yesterday. No trouble sleeping last night.

Temporary good-bye to a dear friend from Brisbane who helped many people in HK:
Barrister Kevin Egan dies aged 70 and see HK's most famous criminal barrister

Jonah 2-4: God arranged for a big fish to swallow Jonah. Jonah was in the fish for 3 days. Inside the fish, Jonah prayed to God for help. God heard Jonah's prayer and got the fish to vomit Jonah on the shore. Again God told Jonah to preach repentance in Nineveh. This time Jonah did as God requested. "Forty days and Nineveh will be destroyed" he proclaimed. The people of Nineveh believed God's message. They put on sackcloth and ashes. They fasted and prayed. They repented of their evil behavior. God saw their change of heart and spared Nineveh. Jonah complained to God:
"Your change of mind will cause me a big loss of face." God said to Jonah: "Do I not have the right to show compassion to my people?"

Lord, please help me repent of bad behavior
My recording of this reading

Psalm 78: Listen, everyone, to my teaching. I will recount the lessons of our history. The things our parents have told us, we will not hide from our children, but will pass them on to the next generation. We want the next generation to know all that the Lord has done for us in the past. May the next generation in turn pass on this knowledge to their own children, so that they too will put their hope in God and never forget all that God has done for us. May future generations not be like our ancestors who so often were unfaithful to God. Even though our ancestors had seen God part the sea, even though they had seen him provide food and water for them in the desert, still they went on sinning. Yet he who is full of compassion forgave and spared them. He remembered they were only weak humans. Eventually he brought them to the promised land and gave a home to each of Israel's tribes. But still they sinned by building mountain shrines and serving idols. Then God raised up David to be their leader. God called him from looking after sheep to be the shepherd of his people.
Lord, help us not to forget all you have done for us

Romans 8.35-39: Nothing can separate us from the love of Jesus, even if we are in big trouble of any kind. By the power of Jesus who loves us, we can get through any trouble.
Jesus, when I am in trouble, help me remember your love

Listen

Luke 24.13-35: That same day, two of Jesus' disciples were on their way from Jerusalem to the village of Emmaus, about 7 km from Jerusalem. As they talked about all that had happened, Jesus himself joined them as they walked along. But they did not recognize him. When Jesus asked them what they were talking about, they said "About Jesus of Nazareth,  and how our leaders had him crucified. And how some women in our group went to Jesus' tomb and were told by angels that he was alive". Jesus then explained the Scripture passages which predicted his suffering and resurrection. Jesus joined the two men for an evening meal. During the meal, he blessed  some bread and gave it to them. They then recognized him. But he immediately vanished from their sight. They said to each other "Did not our hearts burn within us as he talked to us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?" Straight away they returned to Jerusalem where the eleven apostles said to them "Yes, it is true. The Lord has risen". Then they told their story of what had happened on the road, and how they had  recognized Jesus at the breaking of bread
Jesus, please make my heart burn within me as I read the Bible

Reflection on the above readings: When our country wins a game at the World Cup, our hearts are full of joy. Awareness of Jesus, recognition of Jesus fills our heart with an even higher form of joy, a heart-burning joy

The late Kevin Egan studied at Nudgee College, a great rival of Iona College where I'm staying. We often had lively conversations about the benefits of being from the North (Nudgee) or South (Iona) side of the Brisbane River. Great rivalry between North and South. e.g. one young Brisbane Oblate from the South side has put in his will that he wants to be buried in a cemetery near Iona on the South side, not in the Oblate cemetery on the North side!

Today a holiday in HK for Dragon Boat Festival

Hello once more from Iona College in Brisbane where yesterday morning I was one of a group of Oblate priests who took part in a special Sunday Mass for the college's 60th anniversary....followed by a cup of tea with the congregation consisting of many old friends of the college.

After Mass, Fr Slawek (my HK boss) and I went to a special home for a lovely lunch gathering.

And see below!

Jonah 1: God said to Jonah: "Go to the city of Nineveh and preach repentance."  Jonah was afraid to go to Nineveh.  He ran away. He boarded a ship  for Tarshish. When the ship was at sea, a great storm hit the ship. The sailors drew lots to see who was responsible for this bad luck. The lot chose Jonah who admitted his guilt in disobeying God. The sailors then threw Jonah overboard. The sea immediately became calm again.
Lord, please help me agree to do anything you ask me to do

My recording of this reading

Psalms 73-77: Sometimes when I see how bad people prosper, I wonder what's the use in trying to be good? But then I realize that everyone someday has to pay the bill for any evil they have bought in the world. Sometimes when I see our world  and religion in ruins, I wonder why has God abandoned us? Then I remember that God has promised to break the power of the wicked. He has promised to give strength to good people. So may all people honor the Lord our God and judge. May the Lord give us his loving help.
Lord, you are goodness itself. Please help us to be good and to trust you always

Listen

Romans 8.26-29: When we are not sure of what to say in prayer, we ask the Spirit to pray in us. We know that by turning everything to their good, God blesses everyone who loves him. God the Father wants us to become living images of his Son, so that his Son will be the eldest of many brothers and sisters.
Jesus, brother Jesus, please help me to be more like you

Listen

Luke 24.1-11: On Sunday morning, at daybreak, the women went to the tomb with the spices they had prepared. They found that the large stone which had been put at the tomb's entrance had been rolled away. They entered the tomb and found that the body of Jesus was not there. Suddenly two men in brilliant clothes appeared at their side. The men said to them "Why look among the dead for someone who is alive? He is not here. He has risen, just as he said he would". The women told all this to the eleven apostles. But the apostles did not believe them
Jesus, increase my faith in your resurrection

Reflection on the above readings:
How often it happens that large stones/problems are "rolled away" without any effort on our part!

c.f. readings for Sunday 11

Ezekiel 17: The Lord says this: "From the top of the cedar, from the highest branch I will take a shoot and plant it myself on a very high mountain. I will plant it on the high mountain of Israel. It will sprout branches and bear fruit, and become a noble cedar. Every kind of bird will live beneath it, every winged creature rest in the shade of its branches. And every tree of the field will learn that I, the Lord, am the one who stunts tall trees and makes the low ones grow, who withers green trees and makes the withered green. I, the Lord, have spoken, and I will do it."

Psalm 92: It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to make music to your name, O Most High, to proclaim your love in the morning, and your truth right through the night. Your deeds, O Lord, have made me glad. For the work of your hands, I shout with joy. To me you give the wild ox's strength.
You anoint me with the purest oil. May we love and praise you right through our lives, right till the end of our days. May we keep on proclaiming your goodness, proclaiming that in you, our rock, there is only goodness.

Lord, it is right and fitting to love and praise you

Listen

2 Corinthians 5: We are always full of confidence when we remember that to live in the body means to be exiled from the Lord, going as we do by faith and not by sight – we are full of confidence, I say, and actually want to be exiled from the body and make our home with the Lord. Whether we are living in the body or exiled from it, we are intent on pleasing him. For all the truth about us will be brought out in the law court of Christ, and each of us will get what he deserves for the things he did in the body, good or bad.

Mark 4: Jesus said to the crowds: "This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man throws seed on the land. Night and day, while he sleeps, when he is awake, the seed is sprouting and growing; how, he does not know. Of its own accord the land produces first the shoot, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. And when the crop is ready, he loses no time: he starts to reap because the harvest has come."  He also said, "What can we say the kingdom of God is like? What parable can we find for it? It is like a mustard seed which at the time of its sowing in the soil is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet once it is sown it grows into the biggest shrub of them all and puts out big branches so that the birds of the air can shelter in its shade."

Amos 1-9: It was God who formed the mountains and created the wind. The Lord is his name. He says to the House of Israel: Seek me and you shall live. Do not go to the places of idol worship. Seek good and not evil, so that you may live. Hate evil and love good. Injustice and swindling, exploitation of the poor, this is the reason for earthquakes and disaster.
Lord, please help me to do good and avoid evil

My recording of this reading

Psalm 72: O Lord, please bless the king, that he might serve your people with justice. May the mountains bring forth peace for the people and the hills, justice. The kings of Sheba and Seba bring him gifts. All nations will serve him. He will save the poor when they cry for help and the needy who are helpless. He will have pity on the weak and save the lives of the poor. May every tribe be blessed in him. May every nation bless his name.
May all the nations know and love you, Lord

Romans 8.14-21: Everyone moved by the Spirit is a child of God. The Spirit lets us use children's language to speak to God tenderly as "Abba, Father". Since we are God's children, we are also his heirs, coheirs with Jesus, sharing his suffering so as to share his glory. What we suffer in this life can never be compared with the glorious life we will have in heaven. The whole of creation looks forward to sharing the same glory, to sharing immortality.
Abba, Father, may everyone love and honor you. Help everyone get to heaven

Luke 23.50-56: Joseph from the town of Arimathaea was a member of the religious leaders' council. He was a good and just man, and had not agreed to the killing of Jesus. Late Friday afternoon, he went to Governor Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. He took it down from the cross, wrapped it in a burial cloth, and put it in a rock tomb that had not yet been used. The women from Galilee who had come to Jerusalem with Jesus went with Joseph to the tomb. Then they left to prepare burial spices and ointments. They planned to put these on Jesus' body after the Saturday Sabbath day of rest
Jesus in the tomb, please give eternal life to all the dead

Hello from Iona College in Brisbane. Thank you Lord for a safe trip from Kuala Lumpur. Yesterday morning I walked the 10 minutes from my hotel to Sentral Station where I checked in for my flight, then took "South East Asia's fastest train" for the 28 min. trip to KLIA. KL a very beautiful and very friendly place.

Today in Malaysia is a public holiday for Hari Raya (Eid) marking the end of Ramadan ....it's like Christmas or Lunar New Year....lights and decorations everywhere (even in the prison I visited a few days ago!) ....family reunion meals....a happy time. God bless Malaysia!

Joel 1-4: My country has been invaded. Joy has disappeared from the land. Priests, put on sackcloth and lament. Proclaim a fast to pray for our nation. Turn to the Lord your God again, for he is all tenderness and compassion. Call out to the Lord for help. "Spare your people, Lord!" The Lord replies: "I will save and rescue you. I will pour out my spirit on all peoples. Every one will prophesy and see visions. You will learn that I am the Lord your God. Jerusalem will be a holy place."
Lord, let our land be filled with knowledge of you and love for you
My recording of this reading

Psalm 71: In you, O Lord, I take refuge. Please hear me and help me. Be a rock where I can take refuge. Rescue me from people who want to hurt me. It is you, O Lord, who are my hope. In you I have trusted since I was young. From my mother's womb you have been my help. My hope has always been in you. Now that I am old, please do not forget me. Now that my strength fails, do not abandon me. Now that I am old and grey-headed, may I continue to trust in you and proclaim your help. To you I will sing with the harp. All day long my tongue will tell of your goodness to me.
Lord, may all elderly people put their trust and hope in you

Romans 8.9-13: You are on God's team. God the Father is the manager. Jesus is the captain. The Holy Spirit is the coach, a coach living in your heart. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead, is living in you, then he who raised Jesus from the dead will help you live a risen life. By the grace of the Holy Spirit you can stop doing bad things.
Holy Spirit of Jesus, Holy Spirit of the Father, fall afresh on me!

Luke 23.44-49: At about midday, there was an eclipse of the sun. The whole land was in darkness until about 3pm. The veil of the Temple was torn right down the middle. Jesus cried out in a loud voice "Father, into your hands I entrust my life".  Then he died. When the Roman army leader saw what had happened, he said "This was a great and good man". The people who had been present went home asking God for mercy. Jesus' friends stood at a distance and saw all that had happened.
Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for the salvation of the world

Thu June 14

Hello again from Kuala Lumpur. Yesterday morning I took part in lengthy interview with a media team...after which we drove to the home of a young Chinese inmate in prison in HK facing a drug trafficking charge....then last night we met with two more Chinese families of inmates in HK. At the home we visited we were joined by a local politician who is kindly going to support our anti-drug campaign. Please God the media report will do an enormous amount of good on many fronts ...not the least being to stop other young people from going to prison in HK.

This morning I'm due to fly to Brisbane to attend 60th Anniversary functions at my old school, Iona College. Thank you for a prayer. God bless everyone I've met in Koala, I mean Kuala Lumpur the past few days....and God bless the kind people who made this trip possible.

Hosea 7-14: God's message through Hosea: Israel has forgotten its Maker. The people worship idols made by human  hands. It is time to seek the Lord. It is time to sow integrity and reap kindness. Israel, come back to the Lord your God. Have no more to do with idols made by human hands.

Psalms 69-70: Save me, O God, for the waters have risen to my neck. I am sinking fast and can't keep afloat much longer. So many people hate me without cause. I have no more strength to resist them. May my situation not cause anyone to lose faith in you. May people realize that it is for your sake that I am taunted. Taunts have broken my heart. No one shows me any compassion. For food they give me poison. In my thirst they give me vinegar to drink. Lord, do not hide your face from your servant. Answer quickly for I am in distress. You are my rescuer, my help, O God. O Lord, do not delay to help me.
O God come to our assistance. Lord make haste to help us

Romans 7.14-25: Even though I'm on God's team, I don't always play as well as I should. At times I cannot understand my behavior. I fail to do good things, and I find myself doing bad things. It's as if there is a battle going on inside me. In my heart I dearly love God, but my will is weak, and I do things that I know are wrong. Who can help me keep going? Who can fix up things in my life? Jesus can. He is the one who sorts out things in my life, and changes chaos into order, by the working of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus, my life is in your hands. Please arrange my life the way you want to

But this man has done nothing wrong". "Jesus", he said, "remember me when you come into your kingdom". Jesus replied "I promise you, this day you will be with me in Paradise"
Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom

Hello again from Kuala Lumpur. Yesterday morning I went with two kind lawyers to visit a Kenyan woman in prison ...facing the death penalty for drug trafficking ....recruited by the same person who recruited a number of prisoners in HK. Hopefully information from HK can help the woman avoid not only execution but even conviction.

In the afternoon I went with a media team for a two hour drive to the beautiful Ipoh district (whose lovely limestone formations remind me of Zhaoqing in China) for a meal meeting with the family of a young Malaysian facing a drug trafficking charge in HK. Please God the media report will not only help that inmate but also help prevent others from being recruited as drug mules.

Hosea 5-6:  God's message through Hosea: What am I to do with you, Ephraim? What am I to do with you, Judah? Your love is like a morning cloud, like dew that quickly disappears. Psalm 66-68: O God, be gracious and bless us and let your face shine its light upon us. Let all the peoples praise you, O God. Let all the peoples praise you. O sing to the Lord, make music to his name. Rejoice in the Lord, exult at his presence. Father of the orphan, defender of the widow,

Luke 23.33-38: When they reached the place called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there, and the two criminals also, one on his right, the other on his left. The leaders made fun of him "He saved others, let him save himself if he is the Christ of God". The soldiers mocked him too "If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself"
Jesus, you forgave those who mocked you and crucified you. I forgive anyone who has been unkind to me
