A: 90%!

Pope's new letter - "Rejoice and Be Glad":
58. Not infrequently, contrary to the promptings of the Spirit, the life of the Church can become a museum piece or the possession of a select few. This can occur when some groups of Christians give excessive importance to certain rules, customs or ways of acting. The Gospel then tends to be reduced and constricted, deprived of its simplicity, allure and savour. This may well be a subtle form of pelagianism, for it appears to subject the life of grace to certain human structures. It can affect groups, movements and communities, and it explains why so often they begin with an intense life in the Spirit, only to end up fossilized or corrupt.

Genesis 4: Two of Adam and Eve's sons were Cain and Abel. Cain was a farmer.  Abel was a shepherd. Cain was jealous of his brother Abel. God said to Cain: "Get control of yourself." But Cain let his anger take over, and he killed Abel. God asked Cain, "Where is Abel?" Cain answered, "How should I know? I'm not his security guard." God replied, "I can hear your brother's blood crying out to me from the ground. That same ground will no longer give you any crops."
Dear God, please help me not to get angry with other people

My recording of this reading

Psalm 86: Turn your ear, O Lord, and give answer for I am poor and needy. O Lord, you are good and forgiving, full of love to all who call to you. All the nations shall come to adore you and glorify your name, O Lord, you who alone are God. Show me, Lord, your way, and guide my heart so that I may walk in your truth. I will praise you, Lord my God, with all my heart for your love to me has been great. O give your strength to your servant and save your handmaid's son.
Dear Lord, thank you for all your love

Romans 12.14-21: Pray for people who are unkind to you. Be kind to them. Rejoice with those who are happy. Console people who are sad. Treat everyone with kindness. Never be condescending. Make real friends with the poor. Do all you can to live at peace with everyone. Resist evil and conquer it with good
Jesus, I pray for (.. name ...) who was unkind to me

John 2.1-11: Jesus, his mother and his disciples were guests at a wedding at Cana in Galilee The wine ran out, so Jesus' mother said to him "They have no wine". Jesus replied "Woman, my time for doing special things has not yet come". His mother said to the servants "Do whatever he tells you". There were 6 big containers there, used for holding water. Each could hold about 35 liters. Jesus said to the servants "Fill the containers with water" and they filled them up. Jesus then said "take some out and give it to the man in charge of the banquet".  When the man tasted the water, it had turned to wine. The man called the bridegroom and said "You have kept the best wine until now". This was the first public miracle done by Jesus.
Jesus, help me to do whatever you tell me to do

Reflection on the above readings: In the "No" corner: Cain - "Why should I be interested in helping other people?". In the "Yes" corner: Mary - doing something practical to help people in difficulty.

Mon June 25

After Mass yesterday morning at Yau Ma Tei and a cup of tea in my home with a visiting couple from Australia, I joined Fr Franco Mella and a group of prison visitors for a most encouraging meeting at Wong Tai Sin in the early afternoon .... followed by a visit to a very special patient in a nearby hospital .... before returning to YMT for the usual Sunday night gathering for the poor .. at which several dozen volunteers helped produce a most enjoyable "Pizza Party". No trouble sleeping last night ..

Last night at the gathering for the poor I met a man from Sri Lanka who is a rare specimen in HK: he has been given official refugee status by the UN in HK ... and is even allowed to do part-time work. But he was given that status some ten years ago and still hasn't been accepted by any other country, possibly because he has a serious medical condition. A complicated situation extremely difficult for humans to solve .... Come Holy Spirit!

Pope's new letter - "Rejoice and Be Glad":
57. Still, some Christians insist on taking another path, that of justification by their own efforts, the worship of the human will and their own abilities. The result is a self-centred and elitist complacency, bereft of true love. This finds expression in a variety of apparently unconnected ways of thinking and acting: an obsession with the law, an absorption with social and political advantages, a punctilious concern for the Church’s liturgy, doctrine and prestige, a vanity about the ability to manage practical matters, and an excessive concern with programs of self-help and personal fulfilment. Some Christians spend their time and energy on these things, rather than letting themselves be led by the Spirit in the way of love, rather than being passionate about communicating the beauty and the joy of the Gospel and seeking out the lost among the immense crowds that thirst for Christ.[63]

Genesis 3: A creature hostile to God took the form of a snake and tempted the first man and first woman. The snake tempted them to disobey God. When God asked them why they disobeyed him, the man blamed the woman, and the woman blamed the snake. God said to the snake: "You are the enemy of the human race. Someday a member of the human race will defeat you." God said to the man and woman: "From dust you came  and to dust you will return." The first man's name was Adam (meaning "man"). The first woman's name was Eve (meaning "life").
Dear God, please help me understand how evil in the world started when Adam and Eve disobeyed you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 85: I will hear what the Lord God has to say, a voice that speaks of peace. Peace for his people and his friends and those who turn to him in their hearts. His help is near for those who love him and his glory will dwell in our land. Mercy and faithfulness have met. Justice and peace have embraced. Faithfulness shall spring from the earth and justice shall look down from heaven. The Lord will make us prosper and our earth shall yield its fruit. Justice shall march before him and peace shall follow his steps
Lord, please give more peace to our world

Listen

Romans 12.9-13: Do not let your love be superficial, but sincerely prefer good to evil. Have a family love for each other, and a profound respect for each other. Persevere in your love for the Lord and your service of the Lord. Hope will make you cheerful. Do not give up when trials come. Keep on praying. Help people who are in need. Make hospitality your special care.
Jesus, please help me grow in love. Help me love you and other people a bit better

Listen

John 1.35-51: John the Baptist told his disciples Andrew and John that Jesus was the Chosen One of God.  Andrew and John then followed Jesus. Andrew took his brother Simon to Jesus. Jesus changed Simon's name to Peter, and Peter followed Jesus. Jesus met  Philip and said to him "Follow me".  Philip called one more man, Nathanael (Bartholomew) and said to him "we have found the one Moses and the prophets wrote about. He is Jesus, son of Joseph, from Nazareth"
Jesus, please help me introduce more people to know and love you

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: John the Baptist did not say "you are my disciples; Jesus can find his own disciples". Reminds me of an old priest in the Brisbane parish where I grew up ... he was always open to visiting priests saying Mass in his church ... he did not say "these are my people. I'm not going to let others speak to them".

Birthday of John the Baptist

Waiting for me after I returned from Malaysia and Australia two nights ago was a pile of mail from prison inmates .... will take quite a while to work through the backlog. Not to mention emails which also have built up. And WhatsApp messages. Jesus was wise to have been born in the pre-social-media age!

Last night I took part in the annual feastday Mass of St Paul's Parish in Yau Ma Tei. A lovely and most encouraging experience.

c.f. readings for Birthday of John the Baptist

Isaiah 46-49: The Lord called me before I was born. From my mother's womb he knew my name. While I was thinking that I had toiled in vain, all the while my cause was with the Lord. The Lord who formed me in the womb and assigned me to rescue his people, that same Lord  said to me: 'I will make you the light of the nations, so that my salvation will reach to the ends of the earth'. The Lord also says to his people: "Does a woman forget her baby, or a mother the child within her womb? Yet even if these forget, I will never forget you".
Lord, please help me understand how you loved me even before I was born.

My recording of this reading

Psalm 139: O Lord, you search me and you know me. You know my resting and my rising. You know exactly what's going on in my life, all my ways are an open book to you. Before ever a word is on my tongue, you know, O Lord, what I'm going to say. Your knowledge is beyond my understanding, too high, beyond my reach. It was you who created my being, knit me together in my mother's womb. I thank you for the wonder of my life, for the wonders of all your creation.
Lord, thank you for the gift of life. Please help me follow the path to eternal life

Listen

Acts 13: Paul said: God deposed Saul and made David their king, of whom he approved in these words, "I have selected David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart, who will carry out my whole purpose." To keep his promise, God has raised up for Israel one of David's descendants, Jesus, as Saviour, whose coming was heralded by John when he proclaimed a baptism of repentance for the whole people of Israel. Before John ended his career he said, "I am not the one you imagine me to be; that one is coming after me and I am not fit to undo his sandal." "My brothers, sons of Abraham's race, and all you who fear God, this message of salvation is meant for you.

Luke 1.67-80: When John was named, his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and said "Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel. He has visited his people. And you, little child, you shall be called a prophet of the Most High. You will go before the Lord to prepare a way for him". When John grew older, he lived in the wilderness until the time came for him to begin his ministry.
Jesus, please help me prepare your way by helping people to know you

Hello from HK where I arrived back from Kuala Lumpur last night. Yesterday morning at KL airport I had a long and most fruitful meeting with airport police - hoping that the same thing will happen in KL as happened four years ago after I visited Tanzania: airport security was tightened up ... so much so that for the past three years not even one drug mule exiting with drugs from Tz has been arrested at HK airport.

God bless everyone I met over the past 12 days - in KL and in Brisbane - and blessings on the kind HK friends who made the trip possible.

Genesis 1-2: God made the world. God made the sun, the moon and the stars....the whole universe. God said "Let there be light" and there was light. God made the earth with all its plants and trees and animals and fish and birds. God made the first people.....the first man and first woman. God made them in his own image and said to them "Be fruitful, multiply and fill the earth." God saw all that he had made, and all of it was good, very good
Dear God, thank you for making such a beautiful world!

My recording of this reading

Psalm 84: How lovely is your sacred temple, Lord. My heart is longing to spend time in your holy dwelling. Even sparrows and swallows are your temple guests. They build homes for their young near your altar. Blessed are the people who live and work in your temple. And blessed, too, are people who keep the memory of your temple in their hearts. As they go through the troubles of life,
you give them strength to face the trials of each day. Lord, one day within your temple is better than a thousand anywhere else.

Dear God, thank you for special places of prayer

Listen

Romans 12.1-2: I beg you, trust in God's mercy, and worship him in a spiritual way, not just in an external way. Offer your whole life to him as a holy sacrifice. Do not blindly follow the fashions of the world. Instead, let your behavior change, fashioned by your enlightened mind. This is the way to discover the will of God, the way to know what God wants us to do.
Jesus, help me give more time to things that are important, less time to things not so important

Listen

John 1.5-34: John the Baptist was sent by God as a witness to the people about the presence of the Word among them. When religious leaders asked John "Who are you?", he replied "I am, as the prophet Isaiah prophesied, a voice crying out: make a straight way for the Lord". When Jesus came to the river Jordan where John was baptizing, John said "Look, there is the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. He is far more important than I am, because he existed (as the Word) before I was born. I saw the Holy Spirit come down on him like a dove. He will baptize people with the Holy Spirit.  He is the Chosen One of God"
Jesus, lamb of God, Chosen One of God, please baptize me with the Holy Spirit

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: Tomorrow we celebrate the Birthday of John the Baptist so today's Gospel is a very appropriate one. The whole purpose of John's life was to point out Jesus. Not many jobs are more important than this ... and ... it's a job that's meant to be done by ... every Christian!

Other prophets: Pride of heart leads us astray. See how they are listless, those whose souls are not at peace. Lord, I have heard of all your wonderful deeds in the past. Do them again in our day, Lord! Even when everything seems hopeless, I trust in you Lord, I praise you Lord. Seek the Lord, all you humble people. Seek integrity, seek humility. In the days to come, people will say "We want to go with you, since we have learnt that God is with you". Rejoice heart and soul, people of Jerusalem. See, your king comes to you. He is humble and riding on a donkey.
Dear God, thank you for all the beautiful teachings and stories  in  "The Old Testament", ("The First Testament"). I now look forward to your message in "The New Testament"  ("The Second Testament")

Psalms 82-83: God says to corrupt officials: "How long will you judge unjustly and mistreat the poor? You should do justice for the weak and the orphan. You should defend the afflicted and the needy. You should rescue the weak and the poor. You should set them free from the hand of the wicked". O God, please protect your people from corruption and injustice. Save us also from attack by other nations. Let everyone know that you are the Lord of all the earth.
Lord, please stop corrupt officials from hurting people

Romans 10-11: If your lips confess that Jesus is Lord, and if you believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, then you will be saved. How wonderful is God!  How great his wisdom and knowledge. What finite creature could ever understand the mind of our infinite Creator? All that exists comes from him. To him be glory for ever!
Jesus, Father, Spirit - three persons, one God  - to you be glory for ever!

Listen

John 1.1-14: From all eternity the Word existed. The Word was with God the Father. The Word was God the Son. The Word was the source of life for all creatures. The Word became a man, and lived among us. We saw his glory, full of grace and truth. Many people did not recognize and did not accept the Word. But to everyone who did accept him, he gave power to become children of God
Jesus, please help me understand how you are the Word-made-flesh

Reflection on the above Bible readings: Yesterday we finished Luke's Gospel. So today we start the next Gospel, John. Today we have the final reading from the Old Testament section of the Simple Bible. Tomorrow it's back to the front of the book - Genesis. The Bible is not a once-only-read book. It's a keep-reading book. Just like breakfast, lunch and dinner are not once-only-meals; they are every-day-meals. We need them each day. Without them we become physically run down. Without daily Bible reading we become spiritually run down. So...let's keep reading each day...reading God's message for our lives each day....letting God's love increasingly influence our daily lives.

Hello from Brisbane airport on Wed night June 20 ....waiting for late-night flight to Kuala Lumpur. Today I once again walked from Iona College to Wynnum Central shopping centre and back...a  nostalgic journey past site of our family house for 25 years and past many other sacred landmarks. In Wynnum at the St Vincent de Paul store I bought a light jumper and a couple of shirts ....at bargain prices. Last night I slept for 9 and a half hours (after 3 hour walk yesterday) ...the best sleep I've had this year ....a good preparation for tonight's 11.20pm to 5.50am flight

Once again I ask the Good Lord to bless all the people I've met over the past week in Brisbane - especially everyone at Iona.

Micah 5-7: Bethlehem, you are the least important town in Judah, but Israel's future ruler will come from you. He will shepherd our people with the power of God. He himself will be our source of peace. My people, remember what God has done for you. Remember how God wants you to live. This is what God asks of you: act justly, love tenderly, and walk humbly with your God.
Lord, please help me act justly, love tenderly, and walk humbly with you

Psalm 81: Ring out your joy to God our strength, shout in triumph to the God of Jacob. Listen to the voice of the Lord: "I am the Lord your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt. Let there be no foreign god among you, no worship of a false god. O that my people would heed me,
that Israel would walk in my ways. At once I would subdue their foes. But Israel I would feed with finest wheat and honey".

Lord, please help us to walk in your ways

Romans 10.1-4: I have a really great love for the Jews. I pray to God for them to be saved. They have a strong belief in God, but their zeal is misguided. They can't see that friendship with God is a gift from God, not just a matter of external practices.

Luke 24.50-53: Jesus then took his disciples out of Jerusalem to the village of Bethany. Lifting up his hands, he blessed them. As he blessed them, he was carried up to heaven. They worshipped him, then went back to Jerusalem full of joy. They were continually in the Temple praising God.
Jesus, thank you for the Gospel of Luke. Please increase my faith in you as the One who came down from heaven, and went back to heaven

Hello one last time from Iona College in Brisbane. At a late hour tonight I'm due to fly to Kuala Lumpur where a few more meetings are due to be held before I leave for HK on Friday please God.

Yesterday was a talk and walk day: in the morning I enjoyed a class with a Year 7 group at Iona, and in the afternoon I walked back to Iona from Morningside (where I had gone by train to do a bit of shopping). Almost a three hour walk. No trouble sleeping last night.

God bless all the kind people I have met over the past week in Brisbane - especially everyone at Iona....with particular thanks to the Oblate community for their kind hospitality

Micah 1-4: In the future, the mountain of the Temple of the Lord will be the most important place  in the world. All nations will come to this place. They will say: Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord so that he may teach us his ways and we may walk in his paths. Nations will not lift sword against nation. There will be no more training for war.
Yes please, Lord, stop nations fighting each other. Please give peace to our world

My recording of this reading

Psalms 79-80: O God, the nations have invaded your sacred land, they have profaned your holy temple. They have made Jerusalem a heap of ruins. We have become the taunt of our neighbours,
the mockery and scorn of those who surround us. How long, O Lord, will all this last? How long will this sorrow keep going? Do not hold the guilt of our ancestors against us. If their guilt is somehow influencing our situation now please give peace and healing to everyone and everything in our  history. Let the groans of the prisoners come before you. Let your strong arm reprieve those condemned to die. O Lord, our God, help us and save us. Let your face shine on us and we shall be saved.

Lord, please heal any problems in my family tree

Listen

Romans 9.1-5: There is a great sorrow in my heart. It's with me day and night. It's the situation of the Jewish people, how they will not accept the Anointed One. I am willing to do anything to help them accept Jesus. I am willing to undergo the greatest suffering if that would help them believe. They are my nation, my family. They have been so blessed by God. From their flesh and blood came Christ, who is God.
Jesus, God-made-flesh, I pray with Paul that the Jewish people will believe in you

Luke 24.36-49: The disciples were still talking about what had happened when suddenly Jesus himself stood among them. At first they were terrified and thought they were seeing a ghost. But he said "Look at my hands and feet. Yes, it is I indeed. Touch me and see for yourselves. A ghost has no flesh and bones as you can see I have". Their fear turned to joy but they still couldn't believe what they were seeing. So he asked them for something to eat, and they gave him some grilled fish which he ate in front of them. Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and he said "So you see how it is written that the Christ would suffer, and on the third day rise from the dead. And that in his name repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached to all the nations. Soon I will send down to you what the Father promised (the Holy Spirit). Stay in Jerusalem until you are clothed with this power from on high".
Jesus,  increase my faith in your resurrection, and open my mind to understand the Bible better

Reflection on the above readings: Before starting to read something from the Bible ....or before hearing readings from the Bible in church...it's good to pray "Dear Holy Spirit, please open my mind to better understand what I read/hear"

Frightening YouTube reports: LGBT radical impact on educational institutions (No. 5); LGBT infiltrating churches (No. 6); US corporations massively supporting LGBT agenda (No. 7). What has happened in the US is now starting to happen in other places. Some day our children will ask "why didn't you do more to stop this evil?"
