Politicians lose touch with their citizens; parents lose touch with their children; pastors lose touch with their people. Why? Because they don't stay down to earth ... they tend to move in the world of theory rather than practice ... and they don't practise what they preach....so that their words have less and less relevance. Not so Mandela, Gandhi, St Paul, Jesus. As Pope Paul VI said many decades ago, the world no longer listens to anyone ... unless they practise what they preach. The only real authority is moral authority, coming from a life of practice rather than theory.

Pope's new letter - "Rejoice and Be Glad":
91. In living the Gospel, we cannot expect that everything will be easy, for the thirst for power and worldly interests often stands in our way. Saint John Paul II noted that "a society is alienated if its forms of social organization, production and consumption make it more difficult to offer this gift of self and to establish this solidarity between people".[78] In such a society, politics, mass communications and economic, cultural and even religious institutions become so entangled as to become an obstacle to authentic human and social development. As a result, the Beatitudes are not easy to live out; any attempt to do so will be viewed negatively, regarded with suspicion, and met with ridicule.

Genesis 30: Leah gave birth to four sons - Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah. Rachel had no children and was jealous of her sister Leah. Rachel gave her servant girl Bilhah to Jacob and Bilhah gave birth to two sons - Dan and Naphtali. Leah then gave her servant girl Zilpah to Jacob and Zilpah gave birth to two sons - Gad and Asher. Leah herself had two more sons - Issachar and Zebulun and a daughter - Dinah. Finally Rachel had a baby, a son whom she named Joseph. For many long years Jacob worked for Laban but Laban would not let Jacob return to his own land.
Dear God, please bless everyone in my family

My recording of this reading

Psalm 102: O Lord, listen to my prayer in my distress. Do not hide your face from me. For my days are vanishing like smoke,
my bones burn away like a fire. I forget to eat my bread. My skin clings to my bones. All day long my foes revile me. Those who hate me use my name as a curse. But you, O Lord, will endure for ever. You will arise and have mercy on Sion. You will hear the groans of the prisoners and free those condemned to die. I pray to you: "Do not take me away before my time has come,
you whose days last from age to age.

Lord, please help people who are in great distress

1 Corinthians 12.4-10: The Holy Spirit gives us many different gifts. Some people have the gift of wise preaching. Some people have the gift of an extra strong faith. Some people have the gift of healing sick people. Some people have other gifts like the power of miracles, prophecy, recognizing spirits, and the ability to speak in tongues.
Holy Spirit, please increase your influence in my life. Please give me the gift of (..name...)

John 6.52-58: The people said among themselves  "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" Jesus replied "If you refuse to eat my flesh , and drink my blood, you will not have life in you. Anyone who does eat my flesh and drink my blood has eternal life. For my flesh is real food, and my blood is real drink. Anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me, and I live in them. As I, who am sent by the living Father, myself draw life from the Father, so whoever eats me will draw life from me. This is the bread come down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live for ever"
Jesus, thank you for the gift of your Body and Blood in Holy Communion

Pope's new letter - "Rejoice and Be Glad":
"Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven"

90. Jesus himself warns us that the path he proposes goes against the flow, even making us challenge society by the way we live and, as a result, becoming a nuisance. He reminds us how many people have been, and still are, persecuted simply because they struggle for justice, because they take seriously their commitment to God and to others. Unless we wish to sink into an obscure mediocrity, let us not long for an easy life, for "whoever would save his life will lose it" (Mt 16:25).

Genesis 29: Jacob went to the home of his uncle Laban, in Haran. Laban had two daughters, Leah and Rachel. Jacob fell in love with Rachel. Jacob made an agreement with Laban: Jacob would work for Laban for seven years in return for marriage to Rachel. For Jacob,  the seven years went like a flash because he loved Rachel so dearly. But Laban forced Jacob to marry both Leah and Rachel and made him work for another seven years as well.
Dear God, please help us to enjoy our work

My recording of this reading

Psalm 101: My song is of mercy and justice. I sing to you, O Lord. I will try to walk with blameless heart. I will try to give my attention to what is good, not what is bad. People who slander others, people of proud looks, these will not be my friends. People who are good and do good, these will be my friends.
Dear Lord, please help me to avoid bad company

1 Corinthians 11.20-26: Concerning the Lord's Supper, this is what I received from the Lord and then taught you: On the night he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread, broke it and said "This is my body which will be broken for you". After supper he took a cup and said "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Each time you drink this cup, drink it in memory of me". Until the Lord comes, therefore, each time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you re-enact the death of the Lord.
Jesus, help me understand how bread and wine become your body and blood when Christians celebrate the Eucharist

John 6.42-51: The people criticized  Jesus saying "We know his father and mother. How can he say he has come down from heaven?" Jesus replied "I am the bread of life. If you eat this bread which has come down from heaven, you will live forever. I am the living bread which has come down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live for ever. And the bread that I will give is my flesh, for the life of the world".
Jesus, living bread come down from heaven, please help me understand how you give your flesh for the life of the world

Reflection on the above readings: Once again our final two readings are on the same subject - the Eucharist, which is the source and summit of the Christian life. Each of us can ask: to what extent is the Eucharist the source and summit of my life?

The more I read about the rescue of the Thai football team, the more I think .... miracle. Thank you Jesus!

A problem I find myself thinking about more and more: the fact that that HK authorities (Customs/police) are not going after the "Big Fish" (drug lords). And it becomes more complicated: usually when a small fish is on trial, the "Big Picture" (how he/she was recruited/deceived by the Big Fish) is not allowed to be mentioned in court. Why? I hesitate to keep thinking. Which means that the Singapore girl in this re-enactment of a true story, if she went to court in HK, would not be allowed to mention the Big Picture ... how a boyfriend deceived her - here

Pope's new letter - "Rejoice and Be Glad":
89. It is not easy to "make" this evangelical peace, which excludes no one but embraces even those who are a bit odd, troublesome or difficult, demanding, different, beaten down by life or simply uninterested. It is hard work; it calls for great openness of mind and heart, since it is not about creating "a consensus on paper or a transient peace for a contented minority",[75] or a project "by a few for the few".[76] Nor can it attempt to ignore or disregard conflict; instead, it must "face conflict head on, resolve it and make it a link in the chain of a new process".[77] We need to be artisans of peace, for building peace is a craft that demands serenity, creativity, sensitivity and skill. Sowing peace all around us: that is holiness.

c.f. readings for Sunday 15 (on 15th!)

Amos 1-9: It was God who formed the mountains and created the wind. The Lord is his name. He says to the House of Israel: Seek me and you shall live. Do not go to the places of idol worship. Seek good and not evil, so that you may live. Hate evil and love good. Injustice and swindling, exploitation of the poor, this is the reason for earthquakes and disaster.
Lord, please help me to do good and avoid evil

My recording of this reading

Psalm 85: I will hear what the Lord God has to say, a voice that speaks of peace. Peace for his people and his friends and those who turn to him in their hearts. His help is near for those who love him and his glory will dwell in our land. Mercy and faithfulness have met. Justice and peace have embraced. Faithfulness shall spring from the earth and justice shall look down from heaven. The Lord will make us prosper and our earth shall yield its fruit. Justice shall march before him and peace shall follow his steps
Lord, please give more peace to our world

Ephesians 1.1-7: From Paul, appointed to be an apostle of Christ Jesus. Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed be God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Before the world was made, he chose us in Christ, to live through love in his presence. He chose us, in Christ, to be his adopted children, to make us praise the glory of his grace. This grace is his free gift to us in his Beloved Son, through whose blood we gain our freedom and the forgiveness of our sins.

Mark 6.7-13: Jesus went on a teaching tour of the nearby villages. He sent out  his 12 special friends in 6 pairs, with authority over evil spirits. He told them to take only bare essentials for the journey. He said "If any place does not welcome you, as you leave that place shake the dust from your feet as a sign to them". The 12 apostles preached repentance. They cast out many devils. They anointed sick people with oil and healed them.
Jesus, may every place welcome you and your messengers

Sat July 14

I spent much of yesterday at Lai Chi Kok men's prison where the African inmates are strongly supporting France in the World Cup Final ... since 12 of France's 23 players have African origins! See Washington Post: France is the last African country in World Cup!

This poses a problem for me: as an Australian I automatically want to support the under-dog, Croatia ... especially since it's a largely Catholic country; but as a member of the Oblates founded in France I should support France ... especially since it contains so many Africans ... and part of my heart is in Africa which I have visited three times and for whose inmates I spend so much blood, sweat and tears. My hope: an epic game that will be long-remembered for its brilliance and excitement .... and last minute win by .... Les Bleus !

Pope's new letter - "Rejoice and Be Glad":
88. Peacemakers truly "make" peace; they build peace and friendship in society. To those who sow peace Jesus makes this magnificent promise: "They will be called children of God" (Mt 5:9). He told his disciples that, wherever they went, they were to say: "Peace to this house!" (Lk 10:5). The word of God exhorts every believer to work for peace, "along with all who call upon the Lord with a pure heart" (cf. 2 Tim 2:22), for "the harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace" (Jas 3:18). And if there are times in our community when we question what ought to be done, "let us pursue what makes for peace" (Rom 14:19), for unity is preferable to conflict.[74]

Genesis 28: When Rebecca sent Jacob to Haran, she and Isaac told Jacob to find a wife in Haran. While Jacob was on his way to Haran, God appeared to him in a dream and said to him "I will keep you safe wherever you go, and I'll bring you back safely to your own land."
Dear God, please keep us safe wherever we go

My recording of this reading

Psalm 100: Cry out with joy to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing for joy. Know that he, the Lord, is God. He made us, we belong to him. We are his people, the sheep of his flock. Go within his gates, giving thanks. Enter his temple with songs of praise. Give thanks to him and bless his name. Indeed, how good is the Lord, eternal his merciful love. He is faithful from age to age.
Dear Lord, please help us to serve you with gladness

1 Corinthians 10.16-11.1: The cup that we bless is a communion with the blood of Christ. The bread that we break is a communion with the body of Christ. Avoid anything to do with idol worship. It doesn't make sense to share in the table of the Lord and in the table of demons. Whatever you eat, whatever you drink, whatever you do at all, do it for the glory of God. Never do anything offensive to anyone. Try to be helpful to everyone at all times, not anxious for your own advantage, but for the advantage of others, so that they may be saved. Take me for your model, as I take Christ.
Jesus, please help me imitate you in my daily life

John 6.35-40: Jesus said to the people "The bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. I am the bread of life. Anyone who comes to me will never be hungry. Anyone who believes in me will never be thirsty. It is my Father's will that whoever believes in me will have eternal life"
Jesus, living bread from heaven, please help more and more people believe in you and love you

Reflection on the above readings: Jesus is speaking about the Eucharist ... so is Paul .... and it's especially at the Eucharist where we best praise God (Psalm 100) and where we most receive his protection (Genesis)

At Lai Chi Kok men's prison yesterday I admired a young local Chinese guard who had the job of delivering items to every room ... accompanied by several inmates from the Mainland who couldn't speak Cantonese .... so the guard was explaining everything in Mandarin .... but every now and then he would let out some words of exasperation to the effect "They can't understand anything in Cantonese!" and also comments about the fact that the sound for "two" in Cantonese gets mixed up with the sound for "one" in Mandarin! I admired the guard's patience and sense of humor!

Yesterday morning I was a guest at a Ming Pao yum cha ... on the 25th floor of iSquare in Tsim Sha Tsui ... overlooking the harbour and HK island. Last night I was at the usual Thursday night meal for the poor in a Yau Ma Tei canteen. Two very, very different locations!

Pope's new letter - "Rejoice and Be Glad": "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God"
87. This Beatitude makes us think of the many endless situations of war in our world. Yet we ourselves are often a cause of conflict or at least of misunderstanding. For example, I may hear something about someone and I go off and repeat it. I may even embellish it the second time around and keep spreading it. And the more harm it does, the more satisfaction I seem to derive from it. The world of gossip, inhabited by negative and destructive people, does not bring peace. Such people are really the enemies of peace; in no way are they "blessed".[73]

Genesis 26-27: God blessed and protected Isaac all his life. When Isaac grew old and was nearly blind, he followed the usual custom of giving his final blessing to his sons. He wanted to bless Esau first, since Esau was his older son. But Rebecca and Jacob tricked Isaac. Jacob dressed in  Esau's clothes and put hairy animal skins on his arms. Before Esau came home, Jacob asked for Isaac's blessing. Isaac said "Your voice is that of Jacob, but your arms and scent are those of Esau. Are you really Esau?" Jacob said "I am." Isaac then gave him his solemn blessing. When Esau found out what had happened, he was very angry and planned to kill Jacob. So Rebecca got Jacob to go to Haran until Esau's anger cooled down.

Psalm 99: The Lord is king. He is great in Sion. His power is seen throughout the world. Among his priests were Aaron, Moses and Samuel. They prayed to the Lord and he answered their call. Let peoples everywhere praise his name. He is holy, full of power.

John 6.26-29: Jesus said to the people "You have come looking for me because you had so much bread to eat. Do not give so much concern to physical food. Be more concerned about the spiritual food that lasts forever. This is the food I am offering you".
Jesus, please give us the food that lasts forever

Reflection on the above Bible readings: The main topic for many people is physical food ... food... food. So many media advertisements are about physical food. Physical food enables us to stay alive in this world. But physical food can't help us live forever. Only spiritual food contains everlastingness.

Pope's new letter - "Rejoice and Be Glad":
86. A heart that loves God and neighbour (cf. Mt 22:36-40), genuinely and not merely in words, is a pure heart; it can see God. In his hymn to charity, Saint Paul says that "now we see in a mirror, dimly" (1 Cor 13:12), but to the extent that truth and love prevail, we will then be able to see "face to face". Jesus promises that those who are pure in heart "will see God". Keeping a heart free of all that tarnishes love: that is holiness.

Genesis 25: After Abraham died, God blessed Abraham's son Isaac. For a long time Isaac's wife Rebecca could not have children. Then after Isaac prayed for her, she had twin boys - Esau and Jacob. Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp, with the sound of music. Let the sea, the world and all peoples acclaim the King, the Lord. For most of yesterday I stayed home and spent much time working on another Drug Lord "name and shame" file ... will be public in the next week or so I hope. Pope's new letter - "Rejoice and Be Glad":
85. Certainly there can be no love without works of love, but this Beatitude reminds us that the Lord expects a commitment to our brothers and sisters that comes from the heart. For "if I give away all I have, and if I deliver my body to be burned, but have no love, I gain nothing" (1 Cor 13:3). In Matthew's Gospel too, we see that what proceeds from the heart is what defiles a person (cf. 15:18), for from the heart come murder, theft, false witness, and other evil deeds (cf. 15:19). From the heart's intentions come the desires and the deepest decisions that determine our actions.

The Book Blog:   4 readings + recordings
Comments welcome here
Readings are from Simple Bible

Genesis 23-24 (a): Not long after his wife Sarah died Abraham told his number one servant to go back to Haran and find a wife for his son Isaac. The servant went to Haran, to the town of Nahor. When women were getting water from the well in Nahor the servant prayed to God for help to find a wife for Isaac. He said to God, "If I ask a woman for a drink and she answers 'Please take some of my water, and I'll give some to your camels, too' may she be the one you have chosen for Isaac."

Genesis 23-24 (b):  He had barely finished his prayer when Rebecca, daughter of Bethuel came to the well. She was very beautiful and not married. The servant asked her for water  and she said "Drink, sir...and I'll get water for your camels, too."
Bethuel, a relative of Abraham, gladly agreed for Rebecca to go with the servant to be Isaac's wife. Rebecca herself was happy with the plan. Isaac married Rebecca and loved her dearly.

1 Corinthians 5.8-11: Get rid of all evil and wickedness from your life. Replace them with sincerity and truth. People who do wrong will not inherit the kingdom of God: people of immoral lives, idolaters, adulterers, catamites, sodomites, thieves, usurers, drunkards, slanderers and swindlers. Some of you were like that once, but now you have been washed clean and sanctified by Jesus Christ and his Spirit.
Jesus, help me avoid doing bad things. Help me do more good things

John 6.1-15: Near the Sea of Galilee, a large crowd followed Jesus, attracted by the way he healed so many sick people. Jesus climbed a hillside and sat there with his disciples. Seeing the huge crowd, Jesus said to one of his disciples "How can we feed so many people?" The disciple Andrew said "There's a young boy here with 5 loaves and 2 fish. But what good is that for such a huge crowd?" Jesus said "Make the people sit down". The crowd of about 20,000 sat down on the grass. Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and gave them out to all the people. He did the same with the fish. Everyone ate as much as they wanted to. The people, seeing this miracle, said "He really is God's great prophet". Jesus, aware that they wanted to make him king, slipped away and went up the hill by himself
Jesus, please bless my prayers and actions to help others, just as you blessed the loaves and fish

Reflection on the above readings: A good way to pray - "Jesus, please bless my little prayer, just as you blessed the loaves and fish"

To scan "Joshua" by Joseph Girzone, I needed to tear out each page. As I thought about where to find a book binder to put Humpty Dumpty back together again, I remembered the bookbinding section of Lo Wu women's prison .... and the book can be donated to the LW library!

Frightening YouTube reports: LGBT radical impact on educational institutions (No. 5); LGBT infiltrating churches (No. 6); US corporations massively supporting LGBT agenda (No. 7). What has happened in the US is now starting to happen in other places. Some day our children will ask "why didn't you do more to stop this evil?"
