Since government and opposition parties in democratic countries spend so much of their time fighting each other to get/keep/extend power, how good it would be if some countries could set an example for the world by introducing unity government structures - as some places have done during wartime. National Unity Governments in which political parties would fight unemployment, poverty, climate change etc, instead of fighting each other. Please God some of Africa's 56 nations might consider this proposal ... with Nelson Mandela up in Heaven smiling on those who follow his dream of reconciliation and peace and shared prosperity.

Pope's new letter - "Rejoice and Be Glad":
171. The Lord speaks to us in a variety of ways, at work, through others and at every moment. Yet we simply cannot do without the silence of prolonged prayer, which enables us better to perceive God’s language, to interpret the real meaning of the inspirations we believe we have received, to calm our anxieties and to see the whole of our existence afresh in his own light. In this way, we allow the birth of a new synthesis that springs from a life inspired by the Spirit.

Exodus 32: Moses stayed on the mountain about 40 days. During this time the people told Aaron to make them a god out of gold. Aaron made a golden calf and the people worshipped it. On the mountain, God said to Moses "Go down now, because the people have been unfaithful to me. I will punish them, but of you I will make a great nation." Moses pleaded with God not to punish the people. When Moses, carrying the two tablets, came down the mountain he saw the people partying before the golden calf. He threw down the tablets and broke them. He smashed the golden calf. The men of the tribe of Levi were then commissioned to go through the camp and kill many men. About 3,000 men were killed.
Dear God, please don't let us ever worship anyone or anything except you

Psalm 5: At the start of this day I pray to you, O Lord, my King and my God. I offer you my prayer and ask for your help. Through the greatness of your love, I have access to your friendship.  I bow down in reverence and worship. Lead me, Lord, in the way you want me to go. It is you, Lord, who bless good people. You surround them with favors, as with a shield.
Lord, I adore you as my Creator

Ephesians 5.21-33: In your families, treat each other as Christ wants you to: Wives, in your husbands see Christ the head of the Church. Husbands, love your wives as Christ loves the Church. When men and women get married, they become one body. This sacred action helps us understand the relationship between Christ and the Church
Jesus, please help husbands and wives to love each other the way you love the Church

John 20.21-29: That same Sunday evening, the doors were locked in the room where the disciples had gathered, for fear of the religious leaders. But Jesus appeared and stood before them, saying "Peace be with you". He showed them his hands and his side and said "As the Father sent me, so I am sending you". Then he breathed on them, saying "Receive the Holy Spirit". Thomas, one of the 12 apostles, was not there that night. When the other disciples said they had seen the Lord, he replied "Unless I see and touch his wounded body, I refuse to believe". Eight days later, the group was again in the same house, with the doors locked. This time Thomas was with them. Jesus again appeared and stood before them saying "Peace be with you". Then he said to Thomas "Put your hand into my side. Doubt no longer, but believe".  Thomas replied "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said "You believe because you can see me. Blessed are those who have not seen me and yet believe"
Jesus, my Lord and my God, I believe in you. Help me live and grow and die in your friendship

Video report in Chinese by HK Catholic paper the Kung Kau Po of my sharing at August 13 meeting discussing the housing problem in HK

Yesterday after my usual 8.30am Mass at Yau Ma Tei I went to Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in San Po Kong for the 11am Mass which included a sharing about the work of MercyHK. I was then one of 13 people at a Yum Cha in SPK .... one of whom, the current Parish Council President, was one of the first students at the Oblate Primary School in Tokwawan ....and another one who was a student at Po Yan Primary School in Kowloon City, which is now an Oblate school. Small Oblate world! Jesus, please bless the kind people of San Po Kong for their support of MercyHK!

Pope's new letter - "Rejoice and Be Glad":
170. Certainly, spiritual discernment does not exclude existential, psychological, sociological or moral insights drawn from the human sciences. At the same time, it transcends them. Nor are the Church's sound norms sufficient. We should always remember that discernment is a grace. Even though it includes reason and prudence, it goes beyond them, for it seeks a glimpse of that unique and mysterious plan that God has for each of us, which takes shape amid so many varied situations and limitations. It involves more than my temporal well-being, my satisfaction at having accomplished something useful, or even my desire for peace of mind. It has to do with the meaning of my life before the Father who knows and loves me, with the real purpose of my life, which nobody knows better than he. Ultimately, discernment leads to the wellspring of undying life: to know the Father, the only true God, and the one whom he has sent, Jesus Christ (cf. Jn 17:3). It requires no special abilities, nor is it only for the more intelligent or better educated. The Father readily reveals himself to the lowly (cf. Mt 11:25).

Exodus 31: God said to Moses: "The Israelites must make the Sabbath a holy day each week, because the Sabbath is a sign between you and me. Do not do any ordinary work on the Sabbath. Work for six days, then rest on the Sabbath. Consecrate the Sabbath to me." God's words were inscribed on two stone tablets.
Dear God, please help us to make Sunday a holy day

My recording of this reading

Psalm 4: At the end of this day I praise you, Lord, for all your love and help. O people of the world, how long will you close your hearts to God? How long you will keep on chasing false goals? Lord, you have put into my heart a joy that cannot be obtained by big meals and plenty of wine. I will lie down in peace and sleep comes at once, for you, Lord, make me dwell in safety and peace
Thank you, Lord, for your love and help right through today

Listen

Ephesians 5.10-20: Try to discover what the Lord wants of you. Have nothing to do with the futile works of darkness. Wake up from your sleep, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you. Be very careful about the sort of life you live. Follow your enlightened mind, not your unruly passions. Avoid drunkenness. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. Sing prayer songs when you are together, and when you're by yourself, keep on singing to the Lord in your heart, always giving thanks to God
Jesus, make my heart sing right through the day

Listen

John 20.11-18: Peter and John went home. Mary Magdalene remained at the tomb, crying. When she looked inside the tomb, she saw two angels in white. She also saw Jesus standing there, though she did not recognize him. Jesus said "Woman, why are you crying?". Mary thought he was the gardener so she said to him "If you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him". Jesus said "Mary" and she recognized him. Jesus then said "I will ascend to my Father". Mary went and told the disciples all she had seen and heard
Jesus, please bless people who are crying at funerals  today. May awareness of your presence bring them peace and strength for the days ahead

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: Peter and John, men, followed their brain: "no use staying here any longer ... nothing else we can do". Mary Magdalene, woman, followed her heart: "don't go yet".

Sun Sep 9

I spent most of yesterday at the desk, trying to catch up on mail, email, w/app, texts etc ... after preparing for today's Masses. One email was sweet: from the family of the Malawi women arrested recently at HK airport for drug trafficking after being tricked and coerced by Nigerian Drug Lords in Malawi and Kenya. Woman could not remember family phone numbers ... which I've been able to get after using blogs and FB. I've posted the numbers to the woman. Will be a great relief for her to speak to her family.

Pope's new letter - "Rejoice and Be Glad":
169. Discernment is necessary not only at extraordinary times, when we need to resolve grave problems and make crucial decisions. It is a means of spiritual combat for helping us to follow the Lord more faithfully. We need it at all times, to help us recognize God's timetable, lest we fail to heed the promptings of his grace and disregard his invitation to grow. Often discernment is exercised in small and apparently irrelevant things, since greatness of spirit is manifested in simple everyday realities.[124] It involves striving untrammelled for all that is great, better and more beautiful, while at the same time being concerned for the little things, for each day's responsibilities and commitments. For this reason, I ask all Christians not to omit, in dialogue with the Lord, a sincere daily "examination of conscience". Discernment also enables us to recognize the concrete means that the Lord provides in his mysterious and loving plan, to make us move beyond mere good intentions.

c.f. readings for Sunday 23

Isaiah 35: Strengthen all weary hands, steady all trembling knees, and say to all faint hearts "Courage! Do not be afraid. The Lord is coming to save you." Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, the ears of the deaf unsealed. Then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongues of the dumb sing for joy. Exiles will return to Zion shouting for joy, everlasting joy on their faces. Joy and gladness will go with them. Sorrow and lament will be ended.
Lord, please heal the friends I know who are blind, deaf, dumb....

My recording of this reading

Psalm 146: My soul, give praise to the Lord. I will praise the Lord all my days. Put no trust in princes, in mortal men in whom there is no help. Take their breath, they return to clay and their plans that day come to nothing. They are happy who are helped by Jacob's God, whose hope is in the Lord our God, who alone made heaven and earth, the seas and all they contain. It is he who gives bread to the hungry, the Lord, who sets prisoners free. It is the Lord who gives sight to the blind, who raises up those who are bowed down. It is the Lord who protects the stranger and upholds the widow and orphan. It is the Lord who loves the just but thwarts the path of the wicked. The Lord will reign for ever, Zion's God, from age to age.
Lord, please increase my trust and faith in you

Listen

James 2.1-13: Don't try to combine faith in Jesus Christ, our glorified Lord, with the making of distinctions between classes of people. Suppose two men come into your prayer meeting, one beautifully dressed and with a gold ring; the other poor and in shabby clothes. If you welcome the rich man, and look down on the poor man, you are making a big mistake. It was those who are poor according to the world that God chose to be rich in faith. So, never make distinctions between classes of people. Everyone is your neighbor. Love your neighbor as yourself. There will be judgment without mercy for people who have not been merciful. But merciful people need have no fear of judgment
Jesus, help me treat everyone equally and fairly. No favorites

Listen

Mark 7.31-37: Jesus traveled through the area south of the Sea of Galilee. A deaf man with a speech impediment was brought to him. Jesus took the man aside in private, away from the crowd. He put his fingers into the man's ears and put spittle on his tongue. Then he prayed and said "Be opened". The man's ears were opened and his speech became normal. The people said "He has done all things well. He makes the deaf hear and the dumb speak".
Jesus,  heal (..name..) who is "deaf and dumb"

Sat Sep 8

From about 12 noon until 3pm yesterday I attended an extended get-together in a shopping centre near Lai Chi Kok with recently acquitted Li Dan Dan and some special HK friends. Dan Dan was paying a quick visit to HK  ... and hopes to return later in the year to visit and help other Mainland prisoners who are still fighting for their freedom after being tricked by Drug Lords to carry drugs to/through HK. As I've said before, for us chaplains, one of the greatest joys we experience is to meet ex-inmates who have been released from detention.

After the get-together I went into prison ... Lai Chi Kok....for a few hours ....where people dream of someday being on the outside again.

Pope's new letter - "Rejoice and Be Glad":
168. This is all the more important when some novelty presents itself in our lives. Then we have to decide whether it is new wine brought by God or an illusion created by the spirit of this world or the spirit of the devil. At other times, the opposite can happen, when the forces of evil induce us not to change, to leave things as they are, to opt for a rigid resistance to change. Yet that would be to block the working of the Spirit. We are free, with the freedom of Christ. Still, he asks us to examine what is within us - our desires, anxieties, fears and questions - and what takes place all around us-– "the signs of the times" - and thus to recognize the paths that lead to complete freedom. "Test everything; hold fast to what is good" (1 Thess 5:21).

For Feast of Birthday of Mary

Micah 5.1-4: The Lord says this: But you, Bethlehem, the least of the clans of Judah, out of you will be born for me, the one who is to rule over Israel. His origin goes back to the distant past, to the days of old. The Lord's help will be on hold until the time when she who is to give birth, gives birth. He will stand and feed his flock with the power of the Lord, with the majesty of the name of his God. He himself will be peace.

Psalm 12: Lord, I trust in your merciful love. Let my heart rejoice in your saving help. Let me sing to the Lord for his goodness to me, sing psalms to the name of the Lord, the Most High.

Romans 8.28-30: We know that by turning everything to their good, God co-operates with all those who love him, with all those he has called according to his purpose. They are the ones he chose specially long ago and intended to become true images of his Son, so that his Son might be the eldest of many brothers and sisters. He called those he intended for this; those he called, he justified, and with those he justified, he shared his glory.
Listen

Matthew 1.18-25: This is how Jesus came to be born. His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph. But before they lived together, Mary became pregnant by the power of the Holy Spirit. An angel  appeared to Joseph in a dream and said "Joseph, descendant of David, do not be afraid to live with Mary as your wife". Her baby has been conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son. You must name him 'Jesus' ('God saves') because he will save his people from their sins." Joseph  took Mary to his home as his wife. She gave birth to a son, Jesus.
Dear Jesus, Son of God, son of Mary, step-son of Joseph, please help me understand how you are the Saviour of the world

Reflection on the above Bible readings:

If it's Mary's birthday, how come the readings are all about Jesus' birth?! Because Mary is the moon, Jesus is the sun .... all of Mary's light/importance comes from Jesus and reflects Jesus' light/importance. Honoring Mary is a very ancient and very special way of honoring Jesus. Just like in any place/culture we give honor to a person by honoring their parents

Fri Sep 7

Yesterday morning I went to a hospital on HK side to wish a very special friend a Happy Birthday on Sep 8. Friend, John T,  has been in hospital for many years fighting Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as motor neurone disease (MND), or Lou Gehrig's disease. Jesus, through the intercession of your dear Mother whose birthday also is celebrated on Sep 8, please bless John T tomorrow with your healing love!

After the hospital I went to Tsim Sha Tsui to my usual supplier to buy IDD cards for prison inmates ... to find that only two cards remain in the market .... all others having gone out of business because most people now use WhatsApp, WeChat, Skype etc. I'm hoping that someday soon CSD will find a way for inmates to use WhatsApp that does not compromise security etc. (and see below!)

Pope's new letter - "Rejoice and Be Glad":
167. The gift of discernment has become all the more necessary today, since contemporary life offers immense possibilities for action and distraction, and the world presents all of them as valid and good. All of us, but especially the young, are immersed in a culture of zapping. We can navigate simultaneously on two or more screens and interact at the same time with two or three virtual scenarios. Without the wisdom of discernment, we can easily become prey to every passing trend.

Speaking of asylum seekers: there's a 45 year old man from Sri Lanka, been HK 13 years, one of the very few to be given refugee papers by the UN/HK govt. He cannot return to Sri Lanka ... his life will genuinely be in danger. He's allowed to work in HK, but can't find a job. Can anyone please offer him a temporary job? But his great aim is to get to some other country. Could somebody in some other country please try to help him. Not simple, because he also has a health condition. Pope's new letter - "Rejoice and Be Glad":
166. How can we know if something comes from the Holy Spirit or if it stems from the spirit of the world or the spirit of the devil? The only way is through discernment, which calls for something more than intelligence or common sense. It is a gift which we must implore. If we ask with confidence that the Holy Spirit grant us this gift, and then seek to develop it through prayer, reflection, reading and good counsel, then surely we will grow in this spiritual endowment.

Yesterday I spent more than 8 hours at Tai Lam women's prison, one of the 8 being a long chat with Estina, the 29 year old woman from Malawi featured in many media reports like this one. Estina has still not been able to contact her family ... hence my new comment at same link.

Pope's new letter - "Rejoice and Be Glad":
165. Spiritual corruption is worse than the fall of a sinner, for it is a comfortable and self-satisfied form of blindness. Everything then appears acceptable: deception, slander, egotism and other subtle forms of self-centredness, for "even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light" (2 Cor 11:14). So Solomon ended his days, whereas David, who sinned greatly, was able to make up for disgrace. Jesus warned us against this self-deception that easily leads to corruption. He spoke of a person freed from the devil who, convinced that his life was now in order, ended up being possessed by seven other evil spirits (cf. Lk 11:24-26). Another biblical text puts it bluntly: "The dog turns back to his own vomit" (2 Pet 2:22; cf. Pr 26:11).

The Book Blog:   4 readings + recordings
Comments welcome here
Readings are from Simple Bible

Exodus 26-27: God said to Moses: "Make a cover for the sacred tent. Make the cover's support frames of acacia wood. Make a veil of purple, violet and red behind which to put the sacred chest. Make an altar out of acacia wood. Make altar vessels out of bronze. Make a sacred courtyard to go around the tent. Place a sacred flame outside the veil and keep the flame burning from night till morning."
Dear God, thank you for churches and other special places for prayer

Psalm 1: Happy the person who avoids evil and evil entertainment. Happy the person who reads and meditates on God's words. Such a person is like a tree planted beside a river, getting plenty of nourishment, bearing plenty of fruit. Such a person is on the Way of Life. People who do evil are on the Way of Death.
Dear Lord, please help me do good and avoid evil

Ephesians 4.17-19: Do not go back to living the aimless kind of life that many non-believers live. Intellectually they are in the dark, because they have shut the door on God's grace. They have a poor sense of right and wrong, and have abandoned themselves to reckless living
Jesus, help people who are confused about the meaning of life

John 19.31-37: The next day was the Passover. To prevent the bodies remaining on the crosses during the Passover, the soldiers broke the legs of the two men crucified with Jesus. But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was already dead. Instead of breaking  his legs, they pierced his side with a spear.  Immediately there came out blood and water. And so the Scriptures were fulfilled "Not one of his bones will be broken" and "They will look on the one they have pierced".
Jesus, please help me understand how blood and water are symbols of the Eucharist and Baptism

What has happened in the US is now starting to happen in other places. Some day our children will ask "why didn't you do more to stop this evil?"
