Yesterday afternoon when I took a long walk I could not believe how quickly the streets had been cleaned after the damage caused by Super Typhoon Mangkhut on Sunday. Several hundred people were injured during the typhoon, but no one died ... thanks to HK's excellent preparations ... and thank you Heaven for sparing HK from fatalities.
5 months ago at the Court of Appeal, a top legal team engaged the Court for a whole day advocating that High Court judges be given more leeway to apply guidelines for sentencing drug mules. In particular the team argued that all, not some, of the mules who supported my anti-drug campaign, should be given a discount from their sentences. The team used official figures to show that in 2102-2014 there were 73 Tanzanians arrested at HK airport for drug trafficking. But in the following two years, from March 2015 to March 2017, only 7 were arrested ... largely because of my campaign. This morning, after 5 months deliberation, the CA will deliver its judgment. Observers feel the decision will not be favourable and that an appeal to the Court of Final Appeal might follow. On tomorrow's menu I will try to put a report on the judgment.

From Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ

Mark
1.1-8:
This is the
story of the Good News about Jesus Christ,
the Son of God. Long ago God
said through the prophet Isaiah
"I am going to send my messenger before you. He will prepare your
way. A voice cries out in the wilderness: prepare a way for the
Lord". And so it was
that John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness,
proclaiming a baptism for the forgiveness of sins. As the people
were baptized by John in the river Jordan,
they confessed their sins. John wore a
garment of camel skin.
Locusts and wild honey were his food. He said to the
people "Someone is coming who is more important than I am. I am not
worthy to kneel down and undo his sandal straps.
I baptize you with water. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit".
Jesus,
please help us prepare a way for you like John the Baptist

176. I would like these
reflections to be crowned by Mary, because she lived the Beatitudes of Jesus as
none other. She is that woman who rejoiced in the presence of God, who treasured
everything in her heart, and who let herself be pierced by the sword. Mary is
the saint among the saints, blessed above all others. She teaches us the way of
holiness and she walks ever at our side. She
does not let us remain fallen and at times she takes us into her arms without
judging us. Our converse with her consoles, frees and sanctifies us. Mary
our Mother does not need a flood of words. She does not need us to tell her what
is happening in our lives. All we need do is whisper, time and time again:
"Hail Mary"

Isaiah 50.5-9: The Lord has opened my ear to hear his
message.
The Lord has given me words to proclaim his message. For my part, I made no
resistance,
neither did I turn away.
I offered my back to those who struck me,
my cheeks to those who tore at my beard. I did not protect my face
from insult and spittle. I set my face like flint.
The Lord will help me.

116: I love the Lord for he has heard the cry of
my appeal.
He turned his ear to me in the day when I called him. They surrounded me, sorrow, distress and the
snares of death.
I was helpless, so the Lord saved me. Calm down my soul, for the Lord has been good.
I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living. How can I repay the Lord for his goodness to
me?
The cup of salvation I will raise to thank the Lord. O precious in the eyes of the Lord is the
death of his faithful.
Lord, you have loosened my bonds. I am your servant.
Thank you, Lord, for all your
goodness to me

how he must go to Jerusalem to suffer, die and rise from the dead. He also said
"If you want to be my disciple, you must deny yourself,
take up your own cross, and follow me. Selfishness will ruin your life.
Self-sacrificing will bless your life. What use is it to have everything in this

Pope's new letter -
"Rejoice and Be Glad":
175. When, in God's presence, we examine our
life's journey, no areas can be off limits. In all aspects of life we can
continue to grow and offer something greater to God, even in those areas we find
most difficult. We need, though, to ask the Holy Spirit to liberate us and to
expel the fear that makes us ban him from certain parts of our lives. God asks
everything of us, yet he also gives everything to us. He
does not want to enter our lives to cripple or diminish them, but to bring them
to fulfilment. Discernment, then, is not a solipsistic self-analysis or a
form of egotistical introspection, but an authentic process of leaving ourselves
behind in order to approach the mystery of God, who helps us to carry out the
mission to which he has called us, for the good of our brothers and sisters.

Readings for Feast of Mary of Sorrows
Hebrews 5.7-9: During
his life on earth, Christ offered up prayer and entreaty, aloud and in silent
tears, to the one who had the power to save him out of death, and he submitted
so humbly that his prayer was heard. Although he was Son, he learnt to obey
through suffering; but having been made perfect, he became for all who obey him
the source of eternal salvation.
My
recording of this reading
Psalm 31: In you, O Lord, I take refuge. Let me never be put to shame. In your justice, set me free, hear me and speedily rescue me. Be a rock of refuge for me, a mighty stronghold to save me, for you are my rock, my stronghold. Into your hands I commend my spirit. It is you who will redeem me, Lord. I trust in you, Lord. You are my God. My life is in your hands, deliver me from the hands of those who hate me.
Luke 2.33-35: As
the child's father and mother stood there wondering at the things that were
being said about him, Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother: "You
see this child: he is destined for the fall and for the rising of many in
Israel, destined to be a sign that is rejected - and a sword will pierce
your own soul too - so that the secret thoughts of many may be laid
bare."
Recording
John 19.25-27: Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. Seeing his mother and the disciple he loved standing near her, Jesus said to his mother, "Woman, this is your son". Then to the disciple he said, "This is your mother". And from that moment the disciple made a place for her in his home

George Monbiot: Plastic
Soup
The problem is not plastic. It is consumerism.
Pope's new letter -
"Rejoice and Be Glad" (very
appropriate for today's Feast of the Cross!):
174. An essential condition for progress in
discernment is a growing understanding of God's patience and his timetable,
which are never our own. God does not pour down fire upon those who are
unfaithful (cf. Lk 9:54), or allow the zealous to uproot the tares
growing among the wheat (cf. Mt 13:29). Generosity too is demanded, for
"it is more blessed to give than to receive" (Acts 20:35).
Discernment is not about discovering what more we can get out of this life, but
about recognizing how we can better accomplish the mission entrusted to us at
our baptism. This entails a readiness to make sacrifices, even to sacrificing
everything. For happiness is a paradox. We experience it most when we accept the
mysterious logic that is not of this world: "This
is our logic", says Saint Bonaventure,[125]
pointing to the cross. Once we enter into this dynamic, we will
not let our consciences be numbed and we will open ourselves generously to
discernment.

Readings for Feast of The Cross
Numbers 21: In
order to avoid the land of Edom, the Israelites headed towards the coastline.
But the people again criticized God and Moses. So God sent snakes among the
people, and many people died. The people then said to Moses "We have
sinned; please pray for us to save us". Moses prayed for them, and God
heard his prayer. God told Moses to make a bronze snake and put it on a pole.
Anyone bitten by a snake could then look at the bronze snake and live.
Jesus' words (John 3.13):
"The Son of Man must be lifted up as Moses lifted up the serpent in the
desert, so that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him".
Recording
Psalm
78b: May future generations not be like our
ancestors who so often were unfaithful to God. Even though our ancestors had
seen God part the sea, even though they had seen him provide food and water for
them in the desert, still they went on sinning. Yet he who is full of compassion
forgave and spared them. He remembered they were only weak humans. Eventually he
brought them to the promised land and gave a home to each of Israel's tribes.
But still they sinned by building mountain shrines and serving idols. Then God
raised up David to be their leader. God called him from looking after sheep to
be the shepherd of his people.
Lord, help us not to forget all you have done for us
Recording
Philippians 2.6-11: His state was divine, yet Christ Jesus did not cling to his equality with God, but emptied himself to assume the condition of a slave and became as humans are. And being as all humans are, he was humbler yet, even to accepting death, death on a cross. But God raised him high, and gave him the name which is above all other names, so that all beings in the heavens, on earth and in the underworld, should bend the knee at the name of Jesus, and that every tongue should acclaim Jesus Christ as Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Recording (song:
The Philippians Hymn)
John
3.13-17: Jesus said to Nicodemus:
"No one has gone up to heaven except the one who came down from heaven,
the Son of Man who is in heaven; and the Son of Man
must be lifted up, as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so
that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him". Yes, God loved
the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in
him may not be lost but may have eternal life. For God sent his Son into the
world not to condemn the world, but so that through him the world might be
saved.
Jesus, only Son of God the Father, thank you
for coming into this world. Please help more and more people believe in
you

Pope's new letter - "Rejoice and Be Glad":
173. Naturally, this attitude of listening entails obedience to the Gospel as the ultimate standard, but also to the Magisterium that guards it, as we seek to find in the treasury of the Church whatever is most fruitful for the "today" of salvation. It is not a matter of applying rules or repeating what was done in the past, since the same solutions are not valid in all circumstances and what was useful in one context may not prove so in another. The discernment of spirits liberates us from rigidity, which has no place before the perennial "today" of the risen Lord. The Spirit alone can penetrate what is obscure and hidden in every situation, and grasp its every nuance, so that the newness of the Gospel can emerge in another light.

Pope's new letter -
"Rejoice and Be Glad":
172. Nonetheless, it is possible that, even
in prayer itself, we could refuse to let ourselves be confronted by the freedom
of the Spirit, who acts as he wills. We must remember that prayerful discernment
must be born of a readiness to listen: to the Lord and to others, and to reality
itself, which always challenges us in new ways. Only if we are prepared to
listen, do we have the freedom to set aside our own partial or insufficient
ideas, our usual habits and ways of seeing things. In this way, we
become truly open to accepting a call that can shatter our security, but lead us
to a better life. It is not enough that everything be calm and peaceful.
God may be offering us something more, but in our comfortable inadvertence, we
do not recognize it.

Readings are from
Simple Bible
Exodus
33: The Israelites continued their journey
through the desert.
Wherever the people camped,
Moses would put the Sacred Tent outside,
some distance from the camp.
Whenever Moses went out to the Tent,
the pillar of cloud came down on the Tent
and God spoke with Moses face to face,
just like friends speak to each other.
The Israelites would go out to the Tent
for Moses to consult God for them.
Dear
God, thank you for your friendship
My
recording of this reading
Psalm
6: Have mercy on me, Lord, I have no strength.
My body is racked with pain. Please heal me, Lord. I am exhausted with my groaning.
Every night my pillow is covered with tears. Lord, please hear my prayer.
Dear Lord, please help people who are in distress of mind or body
Listen
Ephesians
6.1-9: Children, be obedient to your parents.
Parents, never drive your children to resentment. Slaves, respect your employers.
Employers, treat your workers fairly
Jesus, please help me treat everyone with
respect
Listen
John
21.1-14: Jesus also appeared to the disciples at the
Sea of Galilee, when Peter, John and 5 other disciples were fishing. They
had spent all night in their boat, but had caught nothing. In the morning, Jesus stood on the shore,
though the disciples did not recognize him. He called out "Lower your
net on the right side of the boat". Immediately the net filled with fish. John
realized that the man on the shore was Jesus. John said to Peter "It
is the Lord", and they returned to the shore, which was only about
100 meters away. The net had 153 big fish, but did not break. Jesus had prepared some bread. He also had
some fish cooking on a charcoal fire. He said "Come and have
breakfast".
Jesus, Risen Lord, without you, no fish. With
you, 153 fish. Please help me be more aware of your presence in my life

Reflection on the above readings: A pillar of fire in the first reading, and a pillar of fire (from charcoal) in the Gospel!

Frightening YouTube reports: LGBT radical impact on educational institutions (No. 5); LGBT infiltrating churches (No. 6); US corporations massively supporting LGBT agenda (No. 7). What has happened in the US is now starting to happen in other places. Some day our children will ask "why didn't you do more to stop this evil?"
