Sep 18 Court of Appeal judgment - here - took 5 months to be handed down .... many references to my anti-drug campaign. But by 2-1 the judges are limiting future campaign discounts to 3 months which, as the "1" judge says, is not meaningful. Maybe there will be an application to the Court of Final Appeal?

Leviticus 8-10: Moses followed God's instructions and ordained Aaron and his sons as priests. Moses washed them, put special clothing on them, anointed their heads with chrism and offered a special animal sacrifice on their behalf. Then Aaron lifted up his hands towards the people and blessed them. A flame from the Lord consumed the offering on the altar. The people shouted for joy and fell on their knees. But later on when two of Aaron's sons offered unauthorized fire, a fire from the Lord consumed them. Moses then said: "God expects the highest standard from priests".
Dear God, please bless and protect all priests

My recording of this reading

Psalms 20-21: May the Lord protect and help you, may he give you your heart's desire and fulfil every one of your plans. Some trust in chariots or horses, but we trust in the Lord.
Lord, may our plans and hopes be acceptable to you. Please bless our plans

Listen

Philippians 3.7-11: Because of Christ, I have come to consider all my former advantages as a scholar as disadvantages. Nothing is more important than knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For him I have accepted the loss of everything, and I look on everything as so much rubbish if only I can have Christ. All I want is to know Christ and the power of his resurrection. I want to share his sufferings by carrying the Cross with him. This is the way I can hope to receive eternal life.
Christ Jesus my Lord, knowing you is No. 1

Listen

Matthew 4.1-11: After he was baptized, Jesus spent about 40 days praying and fasting in the desert. During this time, he was tempted by Satan. "If you are the Son of God, change some stones into bread" said Satan. Jesus replied "Human life needs more than bread. Life needs God's message". Satan then took Jesus to a high place and said "Throw yourself down, since the angels will protect you". Jesus replied "Presumption is a sin". Then Satan  took Jesus to a high mountain and showed him all the nations of the world. "Worship me and I will give you all these nations" said Satan. Jesus replied "Go away, Satan! Only God is to be worshipped". The devil then went away.
Jesus, please protect us from Satan and from evil

Reflection on the above readings: Notice how "devil" contains "evil". All evil, in some way or other, is linked to Satan

Pope Francis - The Joy of the Gospel No. 6:
There are Christians whose lives seem like Lent without Easter. I realize of course that joy is not expressed the same way at all times in life, especially at moments of great difficulty. I understand the grief of people who have to endure great suffering, yet slowly but surely we all have to let the joy of faith slowly revive as a quiet yet firm trust, even amid the greatest distress: "My soul is bereft of peace; I have forgotten what happiness is. But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: the steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness" (Lam 3)

Leviticus 1-7: Moses instructed the people: As a sign that you are asking God for forgiveness, put your hand on an animal's head as you sacrifice it to the Lord.
Dear God, please forgive my sins

My recording of this reading

Psalm 19: (sun + law = the "sun-in-law" psalm) The heavens proclaim the glory of God, the starry skies are the work of his hands. The stars can't speak, but they are God's handwriting. The sun is God's love shining on the whole world. The universe is a masterpiece, and so is God's law which shines in our hearts. The precepts of the Lord enlighten our lives each day. The law of the Lord gives joy and wisdom to our hearts. The decrees of the Lord are to be desired more than gold, they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. But  often we are unaware of  our errors. Lord, please protect us from making mistakes.
Lord, may the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart  be pleasing to you

Listen

Phippians 2.13-16: It is God who gives us the spiritual energy to be good and to do good. Don't be someone who is always complaining and arguing. Live a life of light in our dark world. May your life of light offer the world the word of life
Jesus, help me avoid complaining and arguing

Listen

Matthew 3.1-17:  About 30 years after Jesus was born, a man began preaching repentance, and baptizing people in the river Jordan. This man was John the Baptist. His message was "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand". John fulfilled the prophecy: "A voice cries in the wilderness: prepare a way for the Lord". John said "I baptize you with water, but one is coming who will baptize you with the Holy Spirit". Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. After Jesus was baptized, the heavens opened, and Jesus saw the Spirit of God coming down on him like a dove. And a voice from heaven said "This is my Son, the Beloved. My favor rests on him".
Jesus, please help me to prepare your way, like John the Baptist

Reflection on the above readings: Through our daily Bible reading, we receive forgiveness (today's first reading), God's law shines in our hearts (today's Psalm), we receive grace and energy to be/do good (Philippians), and the Holy Spirit blesses us to become more like Jesus the Beloved Son (Gospel)

c.f. readings for Sunday 25

Wisdom 1-2: Love virtue, honesty and simplicity, since God is found by people whose hearts are seeking goodness. Selfishness, dishonesty and bad habits, these close the door of our hearts and prevent Wisdom from entering. Bad people persecute good people, since the lives of good people are a reproach to bad people.
Lord, please help me to be a good person

My recording of this reading

Psalms 52-60: Lord, I will tell everyone about how good you are. You are our Creator. Everyone should love you. Thank you for so often rescuing me from trouble. You uphold my life. Sometimes I have so many troubles and cares that I can't get to sleep. Sometimes I wish I was a bird and could fly away to a safe place. When I fear, I will trust in you, in you whose word I praise. My heart is ready, O God, my heart is ready. I will sing, I will sing your praise. Each morning I will sing of your strength,
and each morning acclaim your love.

O God, please help me to praise and love you every day

James 3.16-17: Wherever you find jealousy and ambition, you find disharmony and evil practices. On the other hand,  wisdom from heaven is good and peaceful and kindly and considerate. It is full of compassion, and does good. There is no trace of partiality or hypocrisy in it
Jesus,  give me wisdom. Make me peaceful

To go with opening of new train station in HK today: Three lawyers and three engineers are traveling by train to a conference. At the station, the three lawyers each buy tickets and watch as the three engineers buy only a single ticket. "How are three people going to travel on only one ticket?" asks a lawyer. "Watch and you'll see," answers an engineer. They all board the train. The lawyers take their respective seats but all three engineers cram into a restroom and close the door behind them. Shortly after the train has departed, the conductor comes around collecting tickets. He knocks on the restroom door and says, "Ticket, please." The door opens just a crack and a single arm emerges with a ticket in hand. The conductor takes it and moves on. The lawyers see this and agree that it is quite a clever idea so, after the conference, they decide to copy the engineers on the return trip and save some money (recognizing the engineers' superior intellect). When they get to the station, they buy a single ticket for the return trip. To their astonishment, the engineers don't buy a ticket at all. "How are you going to travel without a ticket?" says one perplexed lawyer. "Watch and you'll see," answers an engineer. When they board the train the three lawyers cram into a restroom and the three engineers cram into another one nearby. The train departs. Shortly afterward, one of the engineers leaves his restroom and walks over to the restroom where the lawyers are hiding. He knocks on the door and says, "Ticket, please."

Whenever our interior life becomes caught up in its own interests and concerns, there is no longer room for others, no place for the poor. God's voice is no longer heard, the quiet joy of his love is no longer felt, and the desire to do good fades. This is a very real danger for believers too. Many fall prey to it, and end up resentful, angry and listless.

Exodus 40: God said to Moses: "On the first day of the first month, consecrate and start using the Tent of Meeting. Use chrism to anoint all the furnishings. Anoint Aaron and his sons to serve me as priests." Moses did everything that God asked. Then a cloud covered the Tent and the glory of God filled the sacred site. At every stage of their  journey in the desert, the Israelites would continue their march whenever the cloud rose from the sacred site. A fire shone within the cloud at night.

Psalm 17-18: Lord,  when trouble breaks out on every side, please protect and help me. For you are my strength, my rock, my fortress, my savior. I love you, Lord who save me because you love me. Lord, you are my lamp who lightens my life. I will praise you among the nations.

Philippians 2.5-11
O Lord, unite us in your love and keep our minds in you (x2). Though you were God in state divine you did not cling to what you were. No, you shed your glory's shine so as to live just like a slave. O Lord, unite us in your love and keep our minds in you. You came on earth in human form and you shared our troubled life. A humbler man there never was, even in death obedient Yes, Lord, death upon a cross, yes, upon a cross. Therefore are you raised on high and you have the name of names. At that name should bend the knee and tongue confess:  Jesus Christ is LORD. And tongue confess that Jesus Christ is LORD. And tongue confess that Jesus Christ is LORD. To the glory of God the Father

Matthew 2.13-23: After the wise men left Bethlehem, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and said "Go quickly to Egypt,
because Herod wants to kill the child". That same night, Joseph got up and set out for Egypt with Mary and Jesus. Herod was angry after being tricked by the wise men. He got his soldiers to kill all baby boys two years old or younger in Bethlehem. After Herod died some months later, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and told him to return to Israel. Joseph, Mary and Jesus moved to the town of Nazareth, thus fulfilling the prophecy about the Saviour: "He will be called a Nazarene".

c.f. readings for Feast of St Matthew

Isaiah 51-52:
Pay attention to me, you peoples. Listen to me, you nations. The islands put their hope in the Lord. They put their trust in his strength. How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of one who brings good news, who proclaims peace and salvation, and tells Zion "Your God is king!" Break into shouts of joy, you ruins of Jerusalem, for the Lord is redeeming his people. All the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.
Lord, may more and more people in more and more countries know you and love you.

My recording of this reading

Psalm  117:
O Praise the Lord, all you nations. Acclaim him, all you peoples! Strong is his love for us. He is faithful for ever.
May all the nations love and praise you, Lord

Ephesians 4.1-16: I implore you to lead a life worthy of your vocation. Bear with one another charitably, in complete selflessness, gentleness and patience. If we live by the truth and in love, we shall become more and more like Christ. We are parts of the Body of Christ. Christ is the head. Each part must do its bit to keep the Body healthy and growing in love.

Matthew 9.9-13: One day when Jesus was walking past a customs house he said to a tax collector named Matthew "Follow me". Matthew got up and followed Jesus. Matthew invited Jesus and Jesus' friends to a dinner in his house. Some tax collectors and "bad" people sat at Jesus' table. Religious leaders saw this and complained to Jesus' friends "Why does your master eat with tax collectors and bad people?" Jesus' answer was "It is not the healthy who need the doctor, but the sick. Go and think about the Bible words 'What I want is mercy, not sacrifice'. I have a special concern for rejects and down-and-outs."
Jesus, please help religious leaders in today's world to care more about people who are rejected by society

For the Feast of St Matthew who was a tax collector:
A man was driving along the road when all of a sudden he has to swerve to avoid a box falling off the lorry in front. Seconds later a policeman pulled him over for reckless driving. As the policeman starting writing the ticket he noticed the box was full of nails and tacks. "I had to swerve or I'd have run over those and blown my tyres!" protested the driver. "Ok", replied the officer, ripping up the ticket, "but I'm still bringing you in." "What for?!" retorted the man. "Tacks evasion", answered the policeman.

Matthew 2.1-12: Jesus was born in the town of Bethlehem, during the reign of King Herod. Some months after Jesus' birth, several  wise men from the East came to Jerusalem. They said "Where is the infant king of the Jews? We saw his star as it rose and we have come to offer him honor." King Herod felt threatened by this news. He knew from the Scriptures  that the promised Saviour would be born in Bethlehem. So Herod sent the wise men to Bethlehem, pretending that he too would like to offer honor to the child. The wise men headed for Bethlehem, guided by the star. The star filled them with joy. The star stopped over the place where the child was. The wise men fell to their knees and honored the child. They offered him gifts of gold, incense and myrrh. Then they returned to their own country by a different way, having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod.
Jesus, help me to honor you like the wise men

Psalm 14-15: So many people live and act as if God doesn't exist. Some foolish people even say there is no God. So many people have left the way of justice and truth. So many people follow the way of falsehood. Lord, help us to live as we should.

Philippians 1.13-25: My chains have become famous and have given courage to many other believers. Many others are now becoming more daring in announcing the Message without fear. I hope and trust that I will always have courage for Christ to be glorified in my body, whether by my life or by my death. My heart wants to go two ways. One part wants to depart this world  and live for ever with Christ in heaven. The other part wants to stay in this world to help more people to know the Lord

Matthew 1.18-25: This is how Jesus came to be born. His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph. But before they lived together, Mary became pregnant by the power of the Holy Spirit. An angel  appeared to Joseph  in a dream and said "Joseph, descendant of David, do not be afraid to live with Mary as your wife". Her baby has been conceived by the  power of the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son. You must name him 'Jesus' ('God saves') because he will save his people from their sins." Joseph  took Mary to his home as his wife. She gave birth to a son, Jesus.
Dear Jesus, Son of God, son of Mary, step-son of Joseph, please help me understand how you are the Saviour of the world

Reflection on the above readings: From God Calling, Sep 13: Use My Name often. Think of the unending call of "Mother" made by her children. To help, to care, to decide, to appeal, "Mother." Use My Name in that same way - simply, naturally, forcefully.  "Jesus." Use it not only when you need help but to express Love. Uttered aloud, or in the silence of your hearts, it will alter an atmosphere from one of discord to one of Love. It will raise the standard of talk and thought.  "Jesus."

Yesterday at Lai Chi Kok men's prison I learnt from a Macau inmate that one of Macau's main Triads is called Shui Fong, and Wikipedia just informed me that Shui Fong is also called Wo On Lok and is part of the "Wo" family of triads whose territory includes Yau Ma Tei ... which is where I live!

Gay marriage: an elephant in the room (by John W)

Video: What "gay marriage" did to Massachusetts
同志婚姻自2004年立法後,美國麻省的改變 ( 廣東話附字幕版)

Frightening YouTube reports: LGBT radical impact on educational institutions (No. 5); LGBT infiltrating churches (No. 6); US corporations massively supporting LGBT agenda (No. 7). What has happened in the US is now starting to happen in other places. Some day our children will ask "why didn't you do more to stop this evil?"
