Two asylum seeker stories from the past few days:
1: Sri Lankan parents
of baby in hospital unable to pay for diapers and other items for the child +
transport for parents to and from hospital each day.
2: African
single mother due to have baby this week unable to pay this month's rent of
$4,500 for unit for herself and her 12 year old son. Govt rent allowance is only
$3,000.
Thanks to kindness of HK friends I was able to help both cases above ... all the
while thinking how heartless it is of HK government to let asylum seekers stay
in HK but not give them enough to live on. See my
recent reflection

Readings - c.f. Feast of the Guardian Angels
Exodus 23:
The Lord says this: "I myself will send an
angel before you to guard you as you
go and to bring you to the place that I have prepared. Give him reverence and
listen to all that he says. Offer him no defiance; he would not pardon such a
fault, for my name is in him. If you listen carefully to his voice and do
all that I say, I shall be enemy to your enemies, foe to your foes. My angel
will go before you."
My
recording of this reading
Psalm
91: He who dwells in the shelter of the Most
High says to the Lord "you are my refuge in whom I trust". The
Lord will hide you and protect you. Under his wings you will find refuge. You
will not fear any night time terror, nor any attack during the day. Upon
you no evil shall fall, no plague approach where you dwell. For you has he
commanded his angels
to keep you safe in all your ways.

Acts
12: When
Peter was rescued from prison, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John
Mark where people were praying for him, thinking he was still in prison. A
servant girl opened the door when Peter knocked. She ran inside to tell the
group that Peter was at the door. The group did not believe Peter was
there. One of them said "it must be his
angel".
Eventually they opened the door and Peter described how an angel had rescued him
from prison.
Recording
Matthew 18.1: The disciples came to Jesus and said, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" So he called a little child to him and set the child in front of them. Then he said, "I tell you solemnly, unless you change and become like little children you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. And so, the one who makes himself as little as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Anyone who welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me. See that you never despise any of these little ones, for I tell you that their angels in heaven are continually in the presence of my Father in heaven."
Reflection on the above readings:
I recommend this little
prayer which I've said each morning and night for 60 years:
Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God's
love commits me here. Ever this day (night) be at my side to light and guard, to
rule and guide. Amen
Today is also the feast day of the inspiring African saint St Josephina Bakhita

I long:

6.1-15: Jesus said to the crowds:

God is not deaf. Prayer is not a lawyer arguing a case.
Prayer is a child speaking with simple trust like this:
Our Father in heaven,
may everyone love and honor you.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done on earth as in heaven.
Thank you for enough food for today.
Forgive us as we forgive others.

Yesterday as I caught up on office jobs (including about 20 letters from prisoners received in past few days), I listened on the internet to most of the AFL Grand Final from Melbourne ... and ... "wouldn't you know it?" as the Irish say, the internet went down at the very start of the final quarter. A problem in the Yau Ma Tei area. Affected thousands of homes. But thanks to my mobile, I was able to keep listening. Well done Eagles; commiserations Collingwood. Footballers' courage is an inspiration for everyone.

Numbers 11: Some of the
Israelites started complaining
about not having meat to eat, only manna.
So God arranged for quails to land near the camp
and be easily caught for food.
About this time Moses selected seventy men
to help him care for the people.
God blessed the seventy men and they began to prophesy.
Moses said "I wish the whole people of God could be prophets, and God
would give his Spirit to them all".

Yesterday I spent a long day at Lo Wu women's prison, spending much time with several inmates whose appeals are due soon, helping them prepare material ... some of them are representing themselves. In one day room a woman said goodbye: she's due to be discharged tomorrow after a long period of detention. Due to fly directly to her country tomorrow. A day that all inmates dream about.
Two days ago when I went to Shatin Court for the release of an inmate on bail, as I passed through Shatin Plaza, I was sad to see how it - like so many parts of HK - has become a place of shops for wealthy tourists as greedy landlords demand rents that only "wealthy tourist shops" can afford. Even McDonald's had to relocate - could not afford the rent, even though it was one of the busiest outlets in HK. As Pope Francis said, unbridled Capitalism is the dung of the Devil

And may the world of our time, which is searching, sometimes with anguish,
sometimes with hope, be enabled to
receive the good news not from evangelizers who are dejected, discouraged,
impatient or anxious, but from ministers of the Gospel whose lives glow with
fervour, who have first received the joy of Christ".

Readings for Feast of Michael, Gabriel, Raphael
Tobit 12
(Raphael): When
Tobit's banquet was finished, Tobit wanted to thank Raphael
for all his help. Only then did Raphael tell Tobit and Tobias that he was an
angel sent by God to help them. "I am Raphael, one of the 7 angels who
stand ever ready to enter the presence of the glory of the Lord. Never tire of
giving God thanks. And never tire of helping the poor." Raphael farewelled
them, rose in the air, and left them. They praised and thanked God for all he
had done for them.
Dear God, thank you for all your love, all your blessings
My
recording of this reading
Psalm 138: I
thank you, Lord, with all my heart. You have heard the words of my mouth. With the
angels I will bless you. I will adore you in
your holy temple. I thank you for your faithfulness and love which are far above
what we can understand. On the day I called you answered. You increased the
strength of my soul. All earth's kings shall thank you when they hear the words
of your mouth. They shall sing of the Lord's ways: "How great is the glory
of the Lord!"
Lord, when we remember how much you love us
and help us, every day of the year is a Thanksgiving Day
Recording
Revelation 12
(Michael):
Then war broke out in heaven. Michael
and his angels fought the dragon and his angels. Michael
won. Satan and his followers were driven out of heaven. The great dragon, the
serpent, known as the Devil or Satan, was hurled down to earth. His angels were
hurled down with him. The dragon began to make war on the children of the Woman -
those who obey God and bear witness to Jesus.
Jesus, may your holy angels protect us
from Satan
Recording
Luke 1
(Gabriel): In
the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel
to the town of Nazareth in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary
who was betrothed to a man named Joseph. The
angel said to her "Mary, Rejoice! You have been greatly blessed by God. You
are to conceive and have a son whom you must name Jesus. He will be great and
will be called the Son of God". Mary said to the angel, "How can this
happen since I am a virgin?" The angel replied
"The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will
specially bless you. Know this too: your cousin Elizabeth has, in her old age,
conceived a son, and is now in her sixth month". "I am the
handmaid of the Lord", said Mary, "let what you have said, be done for
me". And the angel left her.
God the Son, thank you
for becoming a baby in Mary's womb

Reflection on the above Bible readings:
Notice how the names Raphael,
Michael and Gabriel
all end in "el" which means "God"!
When we are sick: we can ask Raphael
("Medicine of God") to pray for us. When we are in danger, we can ask Michael
("Who is like God") to pray for us. When we feel powerless and weak,
we can ask Gabriel
("God is my strength) to pray for us.

Yesterday on the Feast of Saint Vincent de Paul, as I was having a mid-morning cup of green tea at McDonald's and thinking about how Vincent helped poor people ... especially prisoners ... my phone went: "Thanks to your support letter I've been given bail, but I can't be released until you come to Shatin Court custodial section to receive me". It was an Indonesian domestic helper who had been in detention for 3 weeks on a minor charge. I had seen her at Tai Lam prison and had written a support letter for her because her previous application for bail had been turned down.
So I went to Shatin Court, had lunch with her (she had not eaten anything so far in the day) and helped her with sim card etc .... left her for a couple of hours to enjoy catching up on things (during this time she phoned her mother in Indonesia for the first time in three weeks) .. then late yesterday afternoon went with her to her previous employer's home to collect all her belongings (she has been fired) .... then we took a taxi to Yau Ma Tei (too many items for Metro/bus) where Cheung Chau island Mercy Centre manager Lucia had just finished the usual Thursday night meal with poor people. Lucia took my place in the taxi ... and went to the Cheung Chau ferry pier on HK island .... and soon the woman was safely in the Mercy Centre .... where she is most welcome to stay until she can find accommodation elsewhere. Thank you St Vincent for your help at many stages yesterday! (and see below!)

Once a year Aaron or his successor must wear special vestments
and enter the sanctuary past the veil.
Then he is to offer two goats to pray for atonement
for the whole community of Israel.
One goat will be sacrificed in the Temple;
the other is to be set free to go out into the desert -

When people see you doing good deeds,
people will praise God. I have not come to
abolish the Jewish religion.
I have come to raise it to a higher level of goodness. Your goodness must not
just be something superficial.
Your goodness must be something from the heart. You must avoid anger
and insult, just like you avoid murder.
If you have offended someone, say "Sorry". You must avoid lustful
looks and thoughts.
Looking at someone lustfully is immorality of the heart. Love and pray for
people who are unkind to you.
This is the way to practise the highest level of goodness.
Jesus, please help me
practise a higher level of goodness

Having had a good lunch with an inmate released on bail yesterday (see story above) I didn't feel like a big meal last night, so as I neared my G/F entrance the idea of going an extra 50 metres to buy some cold watermelon from a local market seller became very attractive. Halfway through the 50 metres an old friend from Macau called out to me. If I hadn't started the extra distance he would not have seen me. As we parted after a brief chat (during which I had not mentioned what I had done during the day) he put something into my hand ... which more than covered my financial help to the inmate during the day. Moral of the story: it pays to buy watermelon! ... and ...Jesus, please bless that kind friend!

Yesterday morning I
attended a meeting concerning my anti-drug campaign ... with some officials from
a consulate-general. In the afternoon I visited Pik Uk prison for young men ...
where I was sad to meet yet another young Malaysian arrested at HK airport for
drug trafficking. Please God he'll be able to prove his innocence ... like a
young compatriot recently acquitted by a HK High Court jury.
When
I got out of the MTR (Metro) yesterday on the way to Pik Uk, I couldn't
find the exit where I usually take a mini-bus for the final part of the journey.
Then the penny fell - "lok cho" as they say in Cantonese. I was at the
wrong station! I had got off at Wong Tai Sin instead of Choi Hung! But as usual,
things like this seem to be part of the Good Lord's blueprint: at Wong Tai Sin I
met some special people I hadn't seen for a long time.

I'm just passing through
We have all been there sometime, in a strange place, hesitant in an unknown town
or city, not sure of the next step to take.

The
Book Blog:
4 readings + recordings
Comments welcome here
Readings are from
Simple Bible
Leviticus 11-12: The people were told which animals were
"clean"
and which were "unclean".
Only "clean" animals were allowed to be eaten.
Regulations were also made for when a woman had a baby:
a lamb or two turtledoves or two young pigeons
were to be offered as a prayer for mother and baby.
Dear God, please give me a
clean heart
My
recording of this reading
Psalm
22: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
I call to you for help, but day and night you give no reply. I am a worm and not a man.
Everyone who sees me makes fun of me. They taunt me: "He trusted in the
Lord, why doesn't the Lord help him?" Like water I am poured out, my bones no longer
connected.
My throat is parched, my tongue sticks to my jaws. Many evil people attack me.
They make holes in my hands and my feet.
They await my death. They divide my clothing among them,
they throw a dice for my robe. Yet I know Lord, that you are good and
holy.
I know how you heard the cries of our ancestors and you helped them. It was you who took me from the womb
and entrusted me to my mother's breast.
To you I was committed from my birth,
from my mother's womb you have been my God. Lord, I trust in you even now.
I trust you will not scorn my prayer. Even now I praise you as my Creator.
May all the nations know and worship you.
Lord, please help people who
are in big trouble right now,
especially people whose lives are in danger

Philippians
3.12-14: I am not yet perfect. I have not yet won the
race.
But I am still running,
trying to capture the prize for which Christ Jesus captured me. I forget the past, and strain ahead for what
is still to come.
I am racing for the finish,
for the prize to which God calls us to receive in Christ Jesus
Jesus, please help me keep running each day!

Matthew
4.12-25: After his time in the desert,
Jesus began preaching the same message as John the Baptist:
"Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand". Jesus called four fishermen to become
"fishers of men":
Peter and his brother Andrew, James and his brother John.
They left their boats and went with Jesus.
Jesus went all round the area of Galilee,
preaching in local prayer halls
and healing all kinds of sick people. News spread about the sick being healed,
and soon even people from distant places came to Jesus to be healed.
Jesus, please heal the people I
know who are sick: (...names...)

Reflection on the above readings: Psalm 22 was used by Jesus on the cross. If he quoted the whole psalm, including the words "from my mother's womb", it would have had special significance for Mary at the foot of the cross

Frightening YouTube reports: LGBT radical impact on educational institutions (No. 5); LGBT infiltrating churches (No. 6); US corporations massively supporting LGBT agenda (No. 7). What has happened in the US is now starting to happen in other places. Some day our children will ask "why didn't you do more to stop this evil?"
