Tues Oct 9 (sorry this menu a bit late - technical problem)

Yesterday was my longest ever day in court. Two hours before lunch, then four hours after lunch. In the witness box the whole time. Trying to help a HK man charged with drug trafficking. Verdict will be known on Oct 29. More details next week.

Court yesterday was followed by an evening meeting with the man's family and legal team. By which stage my time and energy were used up. So this menu is a simple one.

My article in today's Ming Pao newspaper has the topic: Express Stations' Puddle Park. It is on Ming Pao website - click "Australian in HK". Text without recording

Leviticus 26-27: God's words through Moses: "If you  keep my commandments I will bless you in every way:
- you will have rain at the right time
- the earth shall give its produce
- your land will know peace
- you will be fruitful and multiply
- I will be in your midst: I will be your God
and you shall be my people.

But if you ignore my words and break my commandments
- you will have no peace
- there will be no rain
- the earth shall not yield its produce
- sickness and pestilence will afflict you
- you will be scattered among the nations".

Dear God,  please help us to keep your commandments

Psalm 32: Happy is the person whose sin is forgiven. For a while I refused to ask for forgiveness, and my body paid the penalty. But then I said "Lord, forgive me". and my spirit and body revived.

My aim is to bind you together in love, and to keep you growing in your knowledge of God's plan for your lives.

Matthew 8.1-3: In Jesus' time, it was illegal for anyone to touch a leper, and it was illegal for lepers  to go near other people. But one day a leper broke the law. He came right up to Jesus and said "If you want to, you can heal me." Jesus also broke the law.
He stretched out his hand, touched the leper, and said "Of course I want to heal you. Be healed!" The man was healed immediately.

Jesus, I didn't know you were a law-breaker.  I guess this means that sometimes, in special cases, it's ok to break the law

After yesterday afternoon's monthly Mass at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, I spent some time at the hospital with a lady from Europe and a local friend of hers who had both attended the Mass. Lady's son is soon to face trial on a drug trafficking charge and he is trying to get enough evidence to convince a jury of his innocence. Lady has paid a brief visit to HK. Saw her son yesterday morning and the day before yesterday. She is due to leave HK today. She is carrying a big cross.... like so many families of people in prison. May the Good Lord bless her and her family, and somehow bring good out of this terrible situation.

c.f. readings for Sunday 27

Genesis 1-2: God made the world. God made  the sun, the moon and the stars....the whole universe. God said "Let there be light" and there was light. God made the earth with all its plants and trees and animals and fish and birds. God made the first people.....the first man and first woman. God made them in his own image and said to them "Be fruitful, multiply and fill the earth." God saw all that he had made, and all of it was good, very good
Dear God, thank you for making such a beautiful world!

My recording of this reading

Psalm 128: O blessed are those who love the Lord and walk in his ways. By the labor of your hands you shall eat. You will be happy and prosper: your wife like a fruitful vine in the heart of your house; your children like shoots of the olive, around your table. Indeed thus shall be blessed the people who love and honor the Lord. May the Lord bless you from Zion all the days of your life. May you see your children's children in a happy Jerusalem! On Israel, peace!

Hebrews 1.1-4: At various times in the past and in various different ways, God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets. But in our own time, he has spoken to us through his Son, through whom he made everything. He is the radiant light of God the Father's glory. He has sacrificed himself for sinners. He has taken his place at the right hand of the Father. He is far greater than any angel

Mark 10.1-12: One day some religious leaders put Jesus to the test by asking him "Is it against the Law of Moses for a man to divorce his wife?" Jesus replied "God created male and female, for the two to become united as one body.  What God has united, no one should separate." The religious leaders then asked "But why did Moses allow divorce?" Jesus replied "Moses allowed divorce because people were so hard of heart.  But divorce was not God's plan. So I say to you, anyone who walks out on their partner and marries someone else, is guilty of adultery."
Jesus, please help married people stay together

  To go with today's Gospel:

Adam to God: God you have given me the beautiful flowers and the sunset....But I look at Eve and she is so beautiful it takes my breath away... Why God, did you make eve so beautiful? God replied, my son that is easy, I made her that way so you would love her.
Adam replied well, it worked but I have another question... I touch the cool water and rub the furry animals and they feel so good to me but I touch Eve and it is so wonderful my heart almost stops... God, why did you make her that way? God replied well Adam that is easy I made her that way so you’d love her.

Well Adam replied, it worked, I do, but God I have one more question and I don't mean to question your wisdom or anything, but God she is stupid, why did you make her stupid? God replied ..my son that is easy ... I made her that way so she would love you.

And: she made it 28 straight (after being trapped at the back)

Sat Oct 6

For the third day in a row I was at the High Court yesterday, for the beginning of a five-day trial of an Indonesian woman pleading not guilty in a drug trafficking charge ... after she was set up by a Filipina called Faith and a Nigerian named Edwin.

Early last night I was called to nearby Queen Elizabeth Hospital to pray with a 75 year old street sleeper ....who died as we read Psalm 23 to him. May his prayers in Heaven help us in this life.

One of the main factors which influenced me to live in Temple Street was "closeness to QEH" .... I can walk there in 10 minutes ... unlike the days when a trip there could take up to an hour. Last night I was there 15 minutes after being called.

Pope Francis - The Joy of the Gospel No. 15:
We cannot forget that evangelization is first and foremost about preaching the Gospel to those who do not know Jesus Christ or who have rejected him. Many of them are quietly seeking God, led by a yearning to see his face, even in countries of ancient Christian tradition. All of them have a right to receive the Gospel

Fri Oct 5

A disappointing day at the Court of Appeal two days ago (see yesterday's menu, below) was followed by an even sadder day yesterday when a High Court judge who has a terrible reputation refused to accept my support letter for a Kenyan defendant .... from a not-very-energetic legal team. Judge also refused to consider mitigation for defendant's information given to HK Customs ("all about Africa ... nothing to do with HK"). I was dumb-struck. After trial I visited the inmate in custodial section of High Court to offer some encouragement, even though I was nearly in tears. Then to recover I spent a bit of time in Rosary Church on way home, after registering some inmates for study at East Tsim Sha Tsui office of Chinese University. Above inmate will launch appeal, but Court of Appeal ....well ...see yesterday's menu, below... this is a recording.

Pope Francis - The Joy of the Gospel No. 13:
The joy of evangelizing always arises from grateful remembrance: the apostles never forgot the moment when Jesus touched their hearts: "It was about four o'clock in the afternoon". Together with Jesus, this remembrance makes present to us "a great cloud of witnesses" (Heb 12:1), some of whom, as believers, we recall with great joy: "Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God" (Heb 13:7). Some of them were ordinary people who were close to us and introduced us to the life of faith: "I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice" (2 Tim 1:5). The believer is essentially "one who remembers"

Leviticus 21-23: God's words through Moses: "Regard the priests as holy, for they offer holy sacrifice. Psalms 29-30: The Lord gives us strength, the Lord blesses us with peace. Thank you, Lord, for so often helping and healing me. I cried to you when sickness surrounded me, and you healed me. You changed my mourning into dancing. So I will thank you always.
Thank you, Lord, for all the times you have healed me

Colossians 1.9-14: I pray that you will continue to grow in your Christian life, a life full of good deeds. Never give in when trials come, but bravely, even joyfully, carry your cross each day. Keep on thanking the Father who has rescued us from the power of darkness, and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we gain our freedom, the forgiveness of our sins.
Father, thank you for letting me be a Christian. Help me be a good Christian

Matthew 6.25-34: Jesus said to the crowds that life is about more than food and clothing. Pointing to some birds flying around, Jesus said: Look at the birds. They don't sow or reap, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. And you are more precious than the birds. Pointing to flowers in the field Jesus said: How beautiful are the flowers. They are more beautiful than King Solomon's clothing. If God cares so much about the life of flowers won't he care even more about human life? So, don't spend your day worrying about what you are going to eat and drink and wear. Put God first in your life, God and a right way of life, then  God will look after your physical needs. Don't waste your energy worrying about tomorrow. Live life one day at a time.
Jesus, please help me put your words into practice

Last night as I headed towards the usual Thursday 6.30pm meal with homeless people, I thought that I should have a beer, since it was my dear Mum's anniversary ... and she loved a cold beer. But beer is a rarity on Thursday night for several reasons, not the least being economic. But then, as we were starting the meal, a "Singtao Beer girl", dressed in green, started going from table to table in the canteen. Thu Oct 4

Yesterday morning I spent a couple of disappointing hours at the Court of Appeal trying to help an inmate from South America. If I had been allowed to speak (which I wasn't, unlike previous occasions) I would have pointed out a big mistake by the learned judges and the Department of Justice barrister: they kept discussing how information from the defendant was passed on by HK Customs to the DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) of the US on several occasions, but no reply was received from the DEA, therefore no benefit can be given the inmate for providing info. Can you see the mistake? Customs should have sent the info to the country of the defendant, not the US! The DEA is totally uninterested in info that does not concern the US ... no wonder no reply.

Last night I attended a meeting with several people including legislator James To Kun Sun concerning the situation of three young HK people in prison in Thailand for drug trafficking .... see this 2017 report of their case

Pope Francis - The Joy of the Gospel No. 12:
Jesus is "the first and greatest evangelizer". In every activity of evangelization, the primacy always belongs to God, who has called us to cooperate with him and who leads us on by by the power of his Spirit. This conviction enables us to maintain a spirit of joy in the midst of a task so demanding and challenging that it engages our entire life.

c.f. Feast of St Francis of Assisi

Galatians 6: The only thing I can boast about is the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom the world is crucified to me, and I to the world. It does not matter if a person is circumcised or not; what matters is for each person to become an altogether new creature. Peace and mercy to all who follow this rule, who form the Israel of God. I want no more trouble from anybody after this; the marks on my body are those of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you

O Divine Master, Grant that I may not so much seek To be consoled as to console; To be understood as to understand; To be loved as to love. Yesterday at Tai Lam women's prison I was sad to meet three more young drug mules from Malaysia - arrested at HK airport over the past few weeks. That brings the number of young Malaysian drug mules (male & female) to about 20 for the period 2016-2018. Why from Malaysia? One reason is that security at KL airport is pathetic.
