Tues Oct 16

At 6pm each week night, court lists for the next day are posted at the HK judiciary website. Last night as I checked the High Court list I was surprised to see that one Yas(s)er Arafat is applying for bail! In the past an Imran Khan has also been listed.

One good thing about the High Court lists: these days it's becoming rare to see the name of a defendant from Africa or South America for trial/sentencing. Thank you Jesus!

Pope Francis - The Joy of the Gospel No. 20:

The Word of God constantly shows us how God challenges those who believe in him "to go forth". Abraham received the call to set out for a new land. Moses heard God's call: "Go, I send you" and led the people towards the promised land. To Jeremiah God says: "To all whom I send you, you shall go"

Numbers 12: Miriam, the sister of Moses and Aaron, started complaining against Moses. So God called Moses, Aaron and Miriam to the Sacred Tent. God said: "Moses is at home in my house and I speak with him face to face. You were wrong to speak against my servant Moses". When God finished speaking Miriam had become a leper. Moses pleaded with God for Miriam. Miriam was exiled from the camp for seven days and then the leprosy left her
Dear God, please help me not to complain so much about other people

My recording of this reading

Psalm 40: I waited, I waited for the Lord and he stooped down to me. He heard my cry. He saved me from distress. He put fresh hope into my heart. How many, O Lord my God, are the times you have helped me. They are too many for me to describe. My God, in the depth of my heart I delight in your law. You do not want external offerings. You want my heart.
Lord, I offer you my heart, my love. You deserve all my love

Listen

Colossians 3.15-16: May the peace of Christ reign in your hearts. Always be thankful. Let the message of Christ, in all its richness, find a home in you. Help each other grow in wisdom. With gratitude in your hearts, sing songs to God.
Jesus, live in my heart. Please live in my heart

Matthew 9.14-17: One day John the Baptist's friends asked Jesus "How come we and the religious leaders fast, but your friends don't?" Jesus replied "Fasting is a good thing, and after I have left this world my friends will  fast. But remember that multiplying external prayers and fasts without a change of heart  is useless. Out of date religious structures need a drastic overhaul, not just external plastic surgery."
Jesus, please help me practise a bit of fasting, especially  each Friday, the day you died

Mon Oct 15

When I returned to HK on Saturday afternoon after a week in Thailand and Cambodia, a mountain of letters from prisoners awaited me ... joining several dozen emails not yet answered (partly because of poor internet connection while I was on the road). So .... yesterday, after morning Mass and before last night's weekly function for the poor, I made a start at catching up. Jesus was wise and clever not to have been born in the age of social media. Imagine the number of messages he would have received each day if the Jewish crowds could contact him on Facebook etc. Come to think of it, he does receive millions of messages each day now ....in the form of prayers

Pope Francis - The Joy of the Gospel No. 16:
I do not believe that the Pope should be expected to offer a definitive or complete word on every question which affects the Church and the world. It is not advisable for the Pope to take the place of local Bishops in the discernment of every issue which arises in their territory. I am conscious of the need to promote a sound decentralization.

Numbers 11: Some of the Israelites started complaining about not having meat to eat, only manna. So God arranged for quails to land near the camp and be easily caught for food. About this time Moses selected seventy men to help him care for the people. God blessed the seventy men and they began to prophesy. Moses said "I wish the whole people of God could be prophets, and God would give his Spirit to them all".
Dear God, please pour out your Holy Spirit on the whole human family

My recording of this reading

Psalms 38-39: O Lord, please forgive my sins and heal me. Heal my body which is sick because of my sins. Protect me, Lord, from those who gloat over me now that I am brought low and unable to help myself. Lord, you have shown me how short a time I have on earth. Lord, give me wisdom of heart to live my life better.
Lord, help us understand the meaning of life

Colossians 3.12-14You are God's special friends. He loves you. You should be clothed in sincere compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Allow for other's weaknesses. Forgive each other as soon as a quarrel begins. The Lord has forgiven you. You must forgive others. Over all these clothes, to keep them together and to complete them, put on love.
Jesus, help me be a better and kinder person

Matthew 9.9-13: One day when Jesus was walking past a customs house he said to a tax collector  named Matthew "Follow me". Matthew got up and followed Jesus. Matthew invited Jesus and Jesus' friends to a dinner in his house. Some tax collectors and  "bad" people sat at Jesus' table. Religious leaders saw this and complained to Jesus' friends "Why does your master eat with tax collectors and bad people?" Jesus' answer was "It is not the healthy who need the doctor, but the sick. Go and think about the Bible words 'What I want is mercy, not sacrifice'. I have a special concern for rejects and down-and-outs."
Jesus, please help religious leaders in today's world to care more about people who are rejected by society

c.f. readings for Sunday 28

Wisdom 6-7: Listen, rulers of the nations, govern with justice, for you will be judged by the Lord. Rulers, if you want to govern successfully, seek Wisdom and she will guide your decisions. A wise ruler is a blessing for his people. The more wise people there are, the better our world will be. When I, Solomon, became a ruler, I prayed for Wisdom. I prayed, and the spirit of Wisdom came to me. In Wisdom's company, all good things came to me.
Lord, please give me the gift of Wisdom

My recording of this reading

Psalm 90: O Lord you have been our refuge from one generation to the next. Before the earth or the world existed, you are God, without beginning or end. For you, a thousand years are like yesterday, come and gone so quickly. We humans have a short life, our life is over like a sigh. Our span is 70 years, or 80 for those who are strong. Make us know the shortness of our life, that we may gain wisdom of heart. In the morning, fill us with your love. Give success to the work of our hands.
Lord, help us realize the shortness of our life, that we may live our lives more wisely

Listen

Hebrews 4.12-16: The word of God is something alive and active. It goes deep into our hearts. In Jesus we have the supreme high priest who is now in the highest heaven. He knows how weak we are. He himself was tempted in every way, but did not sin. Let us be confident in approaching his throne of grace. He will give us grace when we are in need of help
Jesus, our high priest, help me when I'm weak

Listen

Mark 10.17-27: A young man asked Jesus "Master, what do I have to do to get to Heaven?" Jesus replied "Keep the commandments: do not kill; do not commit adultery; honor your father and mother; care for others as much as you care about yourself". The young man said "I have kept all these commandments. What else do I need to do?" Jesus said "If you want to do something really special with your life, go and sell all your possessions, give the money to the poor, then come and follow me as one of my disciples". When the young man heard these words he went away sad, because he was very rich. Jesus then said to his disciples "It is hard for a rich person to get to Heaven".
Jesus, please don't let riches endanger my eternal life

Numbers 10: The Israelites made two silver trumpets. When both trumpets sounded, the whole community would go to where Moses was. When only one trumpet sounded, only the leaders would assemble. The trumpets were also used on special feast days, to remind the people to praise God
Dear God, when we hear trumpets being used in an orchestra or band, may their sound remind us of you

Psalms 35-37: O Lord, please save me from people who slander me, you who rescue the weak from the strong, you whose love is so precious, you in whose light we see light. We believe that if we find our delight in you, you will grant our heart's desire. And so we commit our lives to you, confident you will help us in time of trouble.
Lord, please deepen our trust in you, especially in time of trouble

Colossians 3.5-11: Kill all the bad things that trouble earthly life: fornication, impurity, evil desires, greed,  anger, bad temper, spitefulness, abusive language, dirty talk and lying. You have deleted your old self, and have downloaded a fresh copy of the divine image. That image is Christ. He must be installed in every part of your life.
Jesus, take over my life. Install yourself in every part of my life

Matthew 9.1-8: Some people carried  a paralyzed man through a crowd to Jesus. The man was on a bed. Jesus knew that these people believed he could help them, so he said to the paralyzed man "Courage, your sins are forgiven". Religious leaders in the crowd were thinking to themselves that Jesus was wrong to say he could forgive sins. So Jesus said to the leaders: Which is easier: to say 'Your sins are forgiven', or to say 'Get up and walk'? Then to prove that he had authority to forgive sins, he said to the paralyzed man "Get up, pick up your bed and go home". The man got up and went home. The crowd praised God for what they had seen.
Jesus, please give me more faith in your power to forgive, your power to heal.

Then it hit me: Durian. The man had kindly (?) added some Durian!

Numbers 9: Whenever the Israelites pitched camp the Cloud of God's presence covered the Sacred Tent. From nightfall until morning, the Cloud took the appearance of fire. Whenever the Cloud lifted above the Tent, the Israelites broke camp. Wherever the Cloud stopped, there the Israelites pitched camp. Sometimes the Cloud stayed in one place for one day, sometimes for a month, sometimes a year. However long the Cloud stayed above the Tent the Israelites remained in camp.
In this way they pitched camp and broke camp at the Lord's command.

The Cloud
in Christian tradition is understood to be God the Holy Spirit, so we can pray: Dear Holy Spirit, please lead me and guide me just as you guided the Israelites through the desert
My recording of this reading

Psalm 34: I will bless the Lord at all times, his praise always on my lips. In the Lord my soul shall make its boast, the humble shall hear and be glad. Glorify the Lord with me, together let us praise his name. I sought the Lord and he answered me. From all my terrors he set me free. The angel of the Lord is encamped around those who revere the Lord, to rescue them. Taste and see that the Lord is good. They are happy who seek refuge in him. The Lord is close to the broken-hearted.
Those whose spirits are crushed he will save.

Lord, by our Bible reading and prayer, may we taste and see your goodness each day

Colossians 3.1-2: Since you have been brought back to true life with Christ, focus on heaven, where Christ is, sitting at the Father's right hand. Let your thoughts be more on heavenly things,

Matthew 8.23-27:  Jesus and his "fisher of men" friends got into a boat to cross the lake near Capernaum. Jesus was so tired that he went to sleep in the boat. Then a sudden storm caused big waves to lash the boat. Jesus' friends woke him up and said "Save us, Lord, we are sinking". Jesus stood up, and ordered the wind and sea to be calm. Straight away the wind and sea were calm. Jesus' friends said to each other "Who is this? Even the wind and sea obey him."
Jesus, please calm the storms in my life, my family, our world

Matthew 8.5-13: In the town of Capernaum, a Roman army captain said to Jesus "Sir, my servant is paralyzed and in great pain." Jesus replied "I will go and heal him". I know that you also just need to give an order,
and my servant will be healed". Jesus said "This foreigner's faith is greater than that of the local people. And I  tell you that in the future people from all parts of the world will be in the kingdom of heaven". Then Jesus said to the captain "Go home. Your request made in faith is granted". And the servant was healed at that moment.
