Psalms
49-50: I will turn my mind to a parable,
with the harp I will solve a problem. The problem is: why do bad people prosper and
succeed? The answer: at the end of their lives bad
people will have to face death and judgement, just like everyone else. When we are rich, we often lack wisdom.
Wealth blinds our minds and hearts. Let's not forgot God and his laws.

Thessalonians 2.13-16:
As soon as you heard the Good News, you
accepted it as God's message and not just some human thinking. This message is still a living power among you.
For the sake of the Good News, you have been
badly treated by your own countrymen, just as Christians in Judea have
been badly treated by the Jews. The Jews have been persecuting us and
hindering us from spreading the Good News.
Jesus, please help people who are being
hindered from spreading the message of your love

Matthew
10.17-42:
Jesus said to his apostles
"Because you follow me and speak my message,
therefore you will be arrested and put in prison. But don't worry about what to say for your
defense.
What to say will be given you by the Holy Spirit. Boldly proclaim my message
and do not be afraid of persecution. Take up your cross and follow me.
Anyone who does not take up his cross and follow me
is not worthy of me."
Jesus, please give me more
courage

Moving letter, in Spanish with English translation - here - from Colombian woman coming to terms with being in prison in HK for drug trafficking
A contrast to story below: yesterday at the monthly prayer meeting for the sick at Yau Ma Tei, a Filipina domestic helper and her lady employer attended, both asking prayers for healing. That employer has kindly employed that very good helper for .... 26 years! Not the first time I've heard of this. In fact, the vast majority of employers are good.

Isaiah 56: Foreigners
who love and serve the Lord - these I will bring to my holy mountain, says the

Timothy 1.18 -2.8: Timothy,
my son, as I give you advice for practical issues, remember how the church
elders prayed over you that you would be a good leader. My first bit of advice
is that there should be prayers offered for everyone, especially for kings and
others in authority, so that we can live our life of faith in peace and quiet.
God wants everyone to be saved and reach full knowledge of the truth. There is
only one God, and there is only one mediator between God and humanity, himself a
man, Christ Jesus, who sacrificed himself as a ransom for everyone. In every
place, I want believers to lift up their hands in reverent prayer
God our Father, through Jesus your Son, I ask a blessing on the leaders of
our world, especially the leaders of my own country
Recording
Mark 16.9-20: After
he rose from the dead, Jesus appeared first to Mary of Magdala, from whom he had
cast out 7 devils. Next he appeared to two of his disciples while they
were on a journey. Then he appeared to the
11 apostles. He said to them "Go everywhere in the world. Proclaim the Good
News to all creation. Anyone who believes and is baptized, will be saved.
Anyone who refuses to believe, will be condemned. These are the signs that will
be associated with believers: in my name they will cast out devils, they will
have the gift of tongues, they will pick up snakes in their hands, they will be
unharmed if they drink poison, they will lay their hands on the sick, who will
be healed". And so, the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken
up to heaven, while they, going out, preached everywhere, the Lord working with
them and confirming their message by the miracles that accompanied the message
Lord Jesus, may more and more people all over the world believe in you

Reflection on the above readings ...for Mission Sunday: Step 1 - try to be a good person. This is the basic witness for Jesus. Step 2 - pray each day for people who don't know Jesus - relatives, neighbours, friends, colleagues. Step 3 - pray each day for one city/state/area of our own country, that all people in that place will know and love Jesus. Step 4 - pray each day for one part of the world, that the people in that area will know and love Jesus. (See prayer intentions at bottom of today's menu). Step 5 - wear a Cross.

Mission Sunday joke: Each Sunday the missionary in a poor area of Africa, to help people understand the Bible readings and sermon, would put a picture at the front door of the church for people to see as they entered. One Sunday, when the readings and sermon were about hell, he put a picture of hell at the front door. Then he went to the back room to get ready for his service. But as people arrived he heard them laughing and even begin to dance at the front door. Not at all happy he went out and told them the picture about hell was a serious matter and they should not be rejoicing. But then one man got him to look more closely at the picture: all the people in hell were .... white!

Yesterday I was at Tai Lam women's prison from 9am till 5.30pm ... once again relieved to find no new (HK airport-arrested) arrivals from Africa or South America ... but sad to learn of more local people tricked to collect/receive parcels of drugs from post offices and parcel delivery companies. I said to one woman, a domestic helper, "Didn't you hear about the danger of signing for parcels?" To which she replied "Yes, but I never dreamed he would do this to me". "He" being her Nigerian boyfriend. This is a recording.

Yesterday at the High Court I attended three cases: at all three I asked a blessing on the judges/jurors/legal teams/defendants - and prayer is no small thing - but nevertheless I came away with a feeling of uselessness at the fact that the authorities are not using information from defendants to go after Big Fish ... and at the fact that participation in my anti-drug campaign has now become a largely meaningless venture regarding sentence discounts because of the Court of Appeal's recent anti-campaign judgment. In fact, when on my way home I helped carry the walking frame of a handicapped woman while she used a handrail to descend stairs at nearby Admiralty Metro station I thought to myself: now at last I can say I've done something worthwhile today!

Today is the feast of St Luke, a doctor. A sad day in my home state of Queensland where parliament yesterday approved the killing, by doctors, of unborn babies. Shame, Qld, shame, shame, shame.
Most of my time yesterday, a public holiday for the Ching Ming Festival, was spent "at the desk", answering mail from prisoners, preparing support letters and affidavits for prisoners soon to go to court etc. I need to be careful not to start spelling my middle name as Davit instead of David.

9.18-26: A prayer hall official came to Jesus and said
"My daughter has just died. Please come and lay your hand on her
and she will come back to life". As Jesus and his friends were following the
official to his home,
a woman who had a hemorrhage for 12 years
came up behind Jesus and touched his clothing.
The woman had said to herself
"If I can even touch his clothing, I will be healed". Jesus knew what she was doing and said to her
"My daughter, your faith has healed you".
Instantly she was healed. When Jesus arrived at the official's house
he saw a crowd of people crying loudly. Jesus said to them "Get out of the house.
The little girl is asleep, not dead". The crowd laughed at
Jesus.
After the crowd had gone outside, Jesus went inside.
He took the little girl by the hand, and she stood up.
News of what had happened spread all round the district.
