Yesterday morning I went to Queen Elizabeth Hospital to pay a bill for a prisoner. In the afternoon I went to Prince of Wales Hospital to apply (unsuccessfully) for the medical report of another prisoner. HK also has a Queen Mary Hospital and a Princess Margaret Hospital. Guess what country HK used to belong to?

Numbers 26-27: Moses made a census of all the men in the community. The total number was 624,730. Moses also gave a ruling concerning inheritance: "If a man dies without sons, his inheritance is to pass to his daughters. If he has no daughter, the inheritance is to go to his brothers. If he has no brother, it is to go to his father's brothers. If his father has no brothers, it is to go to the member of his clan who is his closest relative". As Moses neared the end of his life,  he asked God for someone to succeed him as leader. God answered: "Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom the spirit dwells. Lay your hands on him, then bring him before Eleazar the priest and the whole community so that everyone will obey him".
Dear God, please bless all my relatives...and people in authority

Psalm 71: In you, O Lord, I take refuge. Please hear me and help me. Be a rock where I can take refuge. Rescue me from people who want to hurt me. It is you, O Lord, who are my hope. In you I have trusted since I was young. From my mother's womb you have been my help. My hope has always been in you. Now that I am old, please do not forget me. Now that my strength fails, do not abandon me. Now that I am old and grey-headed, may I continue to trust in you and proclaim your help. To you I will sing with the harp. All day long my tongue will tell of your goodness to me.
Lord, may all elderly people put their trust and hope in you

1 Thessalonians 5.19-28: Let the Holy Spirit have a free reign in your life. Hold on to what is good. Avoid every form of evil. May the God of peace make you holy. May you be kept safe in spirit, soul and body, for the coming of Our Lord Jesus Christ. God has called you. He will not fail you. Pray for us. Greet all the believers with the holy kiss. Read this letter to all the believers. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

Matthew 13.1-23: One day Jesus told the people this story: A farmer was planting seeds in his field. Some seeds fell on the path. Birds ate them. Some seeds fell on rocky ground. They became sickly plants, without roots, and died. Some seeds fell among thorns. When they became plants, they were choked by the thorns. Some seeds fell on good soil and produced a rich harvest. People who hear God's word without good will are like the seeds on the path. They are easy prey for Satan. People who hear God's word only superficially are like the seeds on rocky ground. As soon as difficulties come, such people easily give up. People who hear God's word with one ear but with the other listen to the call of greed and pleasure are like the seeds among thorns. Greed kills the word. People who hear God's word with good will and put it into practice are like the good seeds which produced a rich harvest.
Jesus, please help me be good seed!

Numbers 25: For a while the Israelites settled in the area of Shittim. In that place the Israelite men gave themselves over to debauchery with the women of Midian. The Israelites joined these women in sacrifices to local idols. God therefore sent a plague to punish the Israelites and thousands of people died. God commanded Moses to execute Israelites who had taken part in sacrifices to local idols. Phinehas the priest, son of Eleazar, son of Aaron showed his loyalty and zeal by personally executing one of the main offenders, at a time when most people didn't care what was happening.
Dear God, please help us to care about what goes on around us and what is happening in the world

Psalms 69-70: Save me, O God, for the waters have risen to my neck. I am sinking fast and can't keep afloat much longer. So many people hate me without cause. I have no more strength to resist them. May my situation not cause anyone to lose faith in you. May people realize that it is for your sake that I am taunted. Taunts have broken my heart. No one shows me any compassion. For food they give me poison. In my thirst they give me vinegar to drink. Lord, do not hide your face from your servant. Answer quickly for I am in distress. You are my rescuer, my help, O God. O Lord, do not delay to help me.
O God come to our assistance. Lord make haste to help us

Jesus, thank you for everything, even for unhappy things

Matthew 12.46-50: One day when Jesus was speaking to a crowd of people inside a house, his mother and brothers arrived at the house. From outside the house they sent a message to say they would like to speak with him. When Jesus heard they were there, he said "Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?" Then holding out his hand towards his disciples he said "Here are my mother and brothers. Anyone who does the will of my Father in heaven, that person is my brother and sister and mother." Brother Jesus,  please help me do the will of your Father in heaven

Since it now starts around 4.30pm rather than 5.30 as in the past, I guess I'd better start referring to the usual Yau Ma Tei Sunday gathering for the poor as an afternoon function rather than an evening function. c.f. readings for Sunday 30

Jeremiah 30-31: God told Jeremiah to tell the people these words: "I will restore you to health. I will heal your wounds. I have loved you with an everlasting love. Strong and constant is my love for you. I will bring back the exiles and save them. I will change their sorrow into joy. The days are coming when I will make a new agreement with my people. Deep within their hearts I will plant love of my Law. I will be their God and they will be my people. I will forgive all their sins."
Lord, please plant love of you deep within my heart

My recording of this reading

Psalm 126: When the Lord delivered Zion from bondage, it seemed like a dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter, on our lips there were songs. What marvels the Lord worked for us. Indeed we were glad. Those who are sowing in tears will sing when they reap. They go out, full of tears, carrying seed for the sowing. They come back, full of song, carrying their sheaves.
Dear God, please bless all people who are sorrowful as they work

Hebrews 4.12-16: The word of God is something alive and active. It goes deep into our hearts. In Jesus we have the supreme high priest who is now in the highest heaven. He knows how weak we are. Mark 10.46-52: As  Jesus was leaving Jericho on his way to Jerusalem, many people followed him along the road. Sitting by the road was a man who had become blind. His name was Bartimaeus ("son of Timaeus"). When he heard that Jesus was going past, he called out "Son of David, have pity on me". Some people tried to stop him from calling out, but he shouted even more loudly "Son of David, have pity on me". Jesus stopped and said to him "What do you want me to do for you?" He replied "Lord, let me see again". Jesus said to him "Go, your faith has saved you". Immediately his sight returned, and he followed Jesus along the road
Jesus, please heal my blind friend (.. name ..)

Yesterday I was at Lai Chi Kok men's prison for nearly 8 hours, and came away with "much to pray about" as a wise man once said. "Much" includes the sight of visitors (mainly women) in tears as they finished their visits; dozens of inmates in the prison hospital section (including two close friends of the Yau Ma Tei Sunday night gathering); a new drug mule from South America (the 6th this year); a mild confrontation with some Nigerians; a big increase in the number of asylum seekers arrested recently; news that a UK inmate who had been transferred back to UK had ended his life while in detention in UK. Jesus, please bless everyone I met and heard about today.

Numbers 23-24: When Balaam came to the king of Moab, the king again tried to get Balaam to curse the Israelites. But Balaam followed God's words and said: "How can I curse people that God does not curse? These people are specially blessed by God.
How beautiful are your tents, O Jacob. How lovely are your dwellings, O Israel. From you will come a mighty one who will reign over countless peoples. A star from Jacob will be leader".

Matthew 12.9-14: On another Sabbath Jesus visited a prayer hall. A man with a withered hand was in the hall. Some religious leaders asked Jesus, to trap him, "Is it lawful to heal a man on the Sabbath day?" (The leaders taught that no "work" could be done on the Sabbath). Jesus replied: "If one of your sheep fell down a hole on the Sabbath, wouldn't you lift it out? A man is more important than a sheep. Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath." Then Jesus said to the man with the withered hand "Stretch out your hand". He stretched it out. It was healed. The religious leaders left the prayer hall and began plotting how to get rid of Jesus.

Numbers 21-22: As the Israelites continued their journey, a number of kings did battle with them. One of these was Og, king of Bashan. God said to Moses: "Do not be afraid of him, for I have given him into your power". Israel then easily defeated Og and occupied his land. The king of Moab also wanted to attack the Israelites, but before attacking, he consulted Balaam son of Beor
who was a type of prophet and could see the future. Several times the king asked Balaam to curse the Israelites, but each time he blessed them, because this is what God told him to do: "You are not to curse this people, for they are blessed". The king then summoned Balaam to his presence. Balaam began his journey to the king, travelling on a donkey. God sent an angel with a sword to block Balaam's way. The donkey could see the angel, so she left the road to make a detour. Balaam hit her and made her return to the road. On the road the donkey again saw the angel and just lay down on the road. Balaam was very angry and hit her with a stick. Then God made the donkey speak: "Why did you hit me?  Haven't I always been faithful to you?" God now opened Balaam's eyes and he saw the angel with a sword. Balaam realized that the donkey had saved his life. The angel then told Balaam to continue his journey but to say to the king only what God said to say.

Psalms 61-65: O God, hear my cry, you who are my refuge and help. In you alone is my soul at rest. My help comes from you. Take refuge in God, everyone in trouble. Trust him at all times. O God, you are my God, for you I long. My body and soul thirst for you like a dry, weary land without water. Your love is better than life, my lips will speak your praise. On my bed I remember you. On you I muse through the night. You are the Creator of the world. You care for the earth, you give it water. To you our praise is due, wherever we are on earth.

1 Thessalonians 4.13-18: You asked us about the situation of people who have died. Do not mourn in an unhealthy way for them, like people who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again, and that it will be the same for everyone who dies in God's friendship: God will give them life with Jesus. They will live in God's House for ever. With thoughts such as these you should comfort one another in times of mourning

Matthew 12.1-8: One Sabbath day Jesus and his disciples were walking through a cornfield.  The disciples were hungry.
They picked some ears of corn and ate them. Picking corn on the Sabbath was regarded as unlawful by the Pharisees.  So the Pharisees said to Jesus "Your disciples are breaking the Sabbath law". Jesus replied "Don't you remember what David and his followers once did when they were hungry? They ate the Temple bread which only the priests were allowed to eat. Go and learn the meaning  of these words 'What I want is mercy, not superficial external offerings'. I am Master of the Sabbath."

Jesus, Master of the Sabbath, please help me understand that love is more important than law.

Thu Oct 25

Yesterday morning I attended three cases at the High Court: two jury trials and one "guilty-plea" case. When I attend cases, as well as asking a blessing on judges/jurors/legal teams/defendants I also sometimes try to think how lonely and fearsome it must be for the defendant waiting a decision. Which is why defendants are most grateful for someone they know to be in court. Which is why I hope the new NGO "Voice for Prisoners" can work with other NGOs to make sure that every defendant has at least one friend in court. Sadly, most overseas defendants don't have a friend in court.

After the court, I went to Central for a media lunch interview, then to the Catholic Centre Chapel for a few minutes prayer, then to Tsim Sha Tsui to buy some IDD cards for inmates and to enrol an inmate at the Chinese University office. The 22 IDD cards cost HK$1,000 as did the CU course. Then for the walk home to Jordan I passed Rosary Church where I stopped for another little prayer near the side door ... during which two women who had been praying at the front of the church recognized me as they left .... one a former teacher at Notre Dame College who now lives in Sydney! .... and she gave me a present that more than covered the cost of the IDD cards and the CU course! Moral of the story: don't worry about where more will come from, just use what you have to help others.

Numbers 21: In order to avoid the land of Edom, the Israelites headed towards the coastline. But the people again criticized God and Moses. So God sent snakes among the people and many people died. Anyone bitten by a snake could then look at the bronze snake and live

"If we as a (HK) community insist on the rule of law, it cannot be taken from us easily" - powerful words in retirement speech of Judge Robert Tang

Yesterday I finished reading Long Road to Freedom by Nelson Mandela. Inspiring from start to finish. Here is the first of 932 reviews at Amazon:
I can't fully express in words what this books means to me. I put off reading it for years. Mandela was released from prison in my college years and so I knew who he was, and what he accomplished on a very surface level. I always knew I wanted to know his life's story on a deeper level. The writing is forceful, and beautiful and honest. I received inspiration, education and amazement from reading this book. If you have ever had any inclination or interest in reading this .. Trust me!.. It is better than you thought it could be. Let me end by saying that the best way I can describe this book is that after reading it, it made me determined to be a better person!

Numbers 20: The Israelites arrived at Kadesh in the desert of Zin. They had no water, and complained bitterly to Moses and Aaron. Moses and Aaron pleaded with God for help. God told Moses to hit a rock with a branch and in this way, order the rock to give water. Water did in fact flow when Moses hit the rock, but through lack of faith, Moses hit it twice. So God said to Moses and Aaron: "Because you did not fully trust me, therefore you will not lead the people to the promised land". When the Israelites moved on from Kadesh, they asked the Edomites for permission to go through their land. But the Edomites refused this request. Later, on Mount Hor, Aaron died and was succeeded as High Priest by his son Eleazar
Dear God, please increase our trust in you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 51: Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness, and cleanse me of my sin. My offences truly I know them. What is evil in your sight I have done. But in my defence please don't forget that sinfulness is part of the human condition, part of our DNA. A pure heart create for me, O God. Put a steadfast spirit within me. Give me again the joy of your help. With a spirit of fervor sustain me.
Lord,  you will not spurn a humbled, contrite heart

1 Thessalonians 3.11-13: May God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ make it easy for us to visit you again. May the Lord be generous in increasing your love, and make you love one another and the whole human race as much as we love you. May the Lord so confirm your hearts in holiness, that you may be blameless in the sight of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus Christ comes with all his saints
Jesus, please increase my love for the whole human race

Matthew 11.1-19: John the Baptist sent some of his friends to ask Jesus "Are you the promised Anointed One?" Jesus replied
"Tell John what you hear and see: blind people see, lame people walk, lepers are healed". Jesus also said to the people around him how neither John nor himself could please the religious leaders. "For John always fasted and never drank wine, and people said he was possessed. I eat well and I drink wine and people call me a glutton and a drunkard."

Jesus, please help me be someone who is easy to live with, someone who is not hard to please

Reflection on the above readings: Some people are more difficult than others. St Paul would have been more difficult to live with than St Peter. St Jerome was a very difficult man. Yet hang on ... all three became saints!

What has happened in the US is now starting to happen in other places. Some day our children will ask "why didn't you do more to stop this evil?"
