As we pray for those who died in fires, we can ask
Why
such bad fires in California? (... a lesson for other places ...)
(and at a deeper level we cannot help but wonder if the
Culture of Death which has been promoted so widely in California over the past
half century also has some connection with the fires?)

The Church is herself a missionary disciple; she needs
to grow in her interpretation of the revealed word and in her understanding of

Deuteronomy 9: Moses continued his
speech to the people:
"Listen, Israel, you are soon to cross the Jordan River,
to dispossess nations greater and stronger than yourself.
Know that the Lord your God will go in front of
you.
So often in the past you forgot the Lord.
So often you were rebels and did not obey the Lord.
In future you must rebel no more."
Dear
Lord, please don't let me ever rebel against you

Psalm
87: On the holy mountain is
Jerusalem,
the Lord's cherished city. Of you are told glorious things, O city of
God. All nations are called to serve and love the
Lord.
And Jerusalem shall be called their spiritual mother,
for all shall be her children.
Lord, may Jerusalem be a place
of peace and prayer for all peoples

Matthew
15.29-31: Jesus went up into the hills near the Lake of
Galilee.
Large crowds came to him bringing
the lame, the crippled, the blind, the dumb and many others. These they put down at Jesus' feet.
Jesus healed them all. The crowds praised the God of Israel
when they saw the dumb speaking, cripples whole again,
the lame walking and the blind able to see.
Jesus,
please give sick people more faith in your healing love

Deuteronomy
8: Moses continued his
speech to the people:
"Remember how the Lord your God
led you for 40 years in the wilderness,
to humble you, to test you, to know your inmost heart
- whether you would keep his commandments or not.
He humbled you, he fed you with manna,
to make you understand that we do not live on bread alone
but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.
Learn from this that the Lord your God was training you
as a man trains his child.
Keep the commandments of the Lord your God.
Follow his ways and reverence him.
When you become prosperous in the land that God is giving you,
do not become proud and say your own efforts have brought you success.
Take care and do not forget the Lord your God."

Psalm
86: Turn your ear, O Lord, and give answer
for I am poor and needy.
O Lord, you are good and
forgiving,
full of love to all who call to you. All the nations shall come to adore you
and glorify your name, O Lord,
you who alone are God. Show me, Lord, your way, and guide my heart
so that I may walk in your truth. I will praise you, Lord my God, with all my
heart

Timothy 4.1-7: Don't be surprised if some people come up with
strange ideas about how to live life. Satan and his friends are always
trying to sow lies and deception in the Lord's field of truth. Have nothing to do with strange ideas like
"marriage is forbidden" or "you are not allowed to eat
certain foods". Everything God made is good, and no food is to
be rejected, provided grace is said for it. The word of God and prayer
make food holy
Jesus, please help me remember to say a little

Matthew
15.21-28: Jesus went to the coastal district near Tyre
and Sidon.
A foreign woman followed him and shouted
"Sir, Son of David, have pity on me.
My daughter is tormented by an evil spirit." At first Jesus did not answer her, so his
disciples said to him
"Help her, because she keeps shouting after us." Jesus replied "I was sent only to the
people of Israel".
The foreign woman by now was kneeling at Jesus' feet.
"Lord, help me" she pleaded. Jesus said to her "Woman, you have great
faith. Your wish is granted". At that very moment, her daughter
was healed.
Jesus, please give sick people
great faith in you

Reflection
on the above readings: Pope Francis has
often encouraged us to pray before meals:
I ask all believers to return to this beautiful and
meaningful custom. That moment of blessing, however brief, reminds us of our
dependence on God for life; it strengthens our feeling of gratitude for the
gifts of creation; it acknowledges those who by their labours provide us with
these goods; and it reaffirms our solidarity with those in greatest need. Laudato

100 years ago today, at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, World War 1 officially ended, after a conflict that involved 65 million men in battle, left nearly 10 million killed, 21 million wounded, nearly seven million civilian deaths. May the Good Lord help our world avoid war
Not forgetting that the Treaty of Versailles which end World War 1 was a major cause of World War 2 (because it treated Germany so harshly) and was the reason for China's young leaders turning away from the West and turning to Marxism/Russia (because China also was treated so badly - see May 4 Movement)

c.f. readings for Sunday 32
1 Kings 17: When Ahab was king of Israel, in
the 9th century B.C.,
Elijah was a prophet of the Lord. Elijah told Ahab there would be
no rain for a long time
because the people were following the cult of Baal. Elijah did miracles in the name
of the Lord:
he blessed a poor widow's food to make it increase,
and he brought back to life a young boy who had died.
Dear God, please bless our prayers as you blessed the prayers of Elijah
My
recording of this reading
Psalm
146: My soul, give
praise to the Lord.
I will praise the Lord all my days. Put no trust in
princes,
in mortal men in whom there is no help. Take their breath, they
return to clay
and their plans that day come to nothing. They are happy who are
helped by Jacob's God,
whose hope is in the Lord our God, who alone made heaven
and earth,
the seas and all they contain. It is he who gives
bread to the hungry,
the Lord, who sets prisoners free. It is the Lord who
gives sight to the blind,
who raises up those who are bowed down. It is the Lord who
protects the stranger
and upholds the widow and orphan. It is the Lord who
loves the just
but thwarts the path of the wicked. The Lord will reign for
ever,
Zion's God, from age to age.
Lord, please increase my trust

Hebrews
8-9:
Jesus' priesthood is part of the new covenant
predicted in the Scriptures: "See, the days are coming - it is the
Lord who speaks - when I will establish a new covenant with the House of
Israel". Jesus
has come as High Priest of all the
blessings that were predicted would be part of the new covenant. He has offered not the blood of animals like
priests of the old covenant, but his own blood, by which he won our
redemption. His blood can purify our inner self from dead
actions,
to help us in our life of dedication to the living God
Jesus, by your precious blood, purify my heart

12.41-44: Jesus sat down in the Temple area and noticed

7: Moses continued his
speech to the people:
"You are a people consecrated to the Lord your God.
It is you that the Lord our God has chosen
to be his very own people out of all the peoples on the earth.
But know this:
if the Lord set his heart on you and chose you,
it was not because you outnumbered other peoples.
In fact you were the least of all peoples.
It was for love of you and to keep his promise to our ancestors
that the Lord chose you.
Listen then to these ordinances, be true to them and observe them,
and in return the Lord your God will be true to you.
He will love you and bless you and increase your numbers.
He will bless the fruit of your body and the produce of your soil,
your corn, your wine, your oil, the issue of your cattle,

No man or woman among will shall be barren,
no male or female of your beasts infertile.

To want to be a presiding elder is to want to
do a noble work.
That is why the president must be above reproach: He must not have been married more than once.
He must be temperate, discreet, courteous, hospitable, a good teacher, not
a heavy drinker, not hot-tempered, but kind and peaceable. He must not be a lover of money. He must be a
man who manages his family well and brings up his children well. How could anyone who can't manage his

After desk jobs yesterday morning I paid a midday visit to a

Let these words I urge on you today

You shall repeat them to your children and say them
when you are resting in your house or going for a walk,
when you are lying down and when you get up.

Timothy 1-2:
Timothy, my son, as I
give you advice for practical issues, remember how the church elders
prayed over you that you would be a good leader. My first bit of advice
is that there should be prayers offered for everyone, especially for kings
and others in authority, so that we can live our life of faith in peace
and quiet. God wants everyone to
be saved and reach full knowledge of the truth. There is only one God,
and there is only one mediator between God and humanity, himself a man,
Christ Jesus, who sacrificed himself as a ransom for everyone. In every place, I want
believers to lift up their hands in reverent prayer.
God our Father, through
Jesus your Son, I ask a blessing on the leaders of our world, especially
the leaders of my own country

All those who touched his clothing were healed

Reflection on the above Bible readings: 1 Timothy says to pray for people in authority. My custom as I go to sleep each night is to say "Jesus, please give the world better leaders", each night praying for one part of the world, as at bottom of today's menu. So tonight I would pray for better leaders in South America. My prayer is usually just a simple "Our Father" prayed with Jeus to our Father, which I sometimes don't even finish. Nothing like politicians to put one to sleep!

14.22-33: After feeding the crowd with 5 loaves and 2

Jesus told his disciples to go by boat across the nearby lake.
Jesus stayed to send the crowds away.
Then he went up into the hills to pray. When darkness came, the boat was far from land,
but it was battling large waves caused by a strong head-wind. Jesus then walked on the water towards the
boat.
He called out to his disciples "Courage. It is I. Don't be
afraid." Peter answered "Lord, if it is you, tell
me to walk on the water to you." Jesus said "Come". Peter then started walking on the water,
but he became afraid and began to sink.
"Lord, save me" he called out.
Jesus took him by the hand and helped him to keep walking on the water.
"Man of little faith, why did you doubt?" asked Jesus.
As they got into the boat, the wind stopped. The men in the boat bowed to Jesus and said
"You really are the Son of God".

Moses continued his
talk to the Israelites:
"God has been with us these 40 years,
watching over us and providing for us.
God gave us many victories
and continually told us not to be afraid of any enemies.
So now, Israel, do not forget God's goodness and help and laws.
Do not forget the things your eyes have seen.
Make sure to tell these things to your children's children.
God has brought you out of Egypt to be his special people.
If you seek God with all your heart and soul
you will find him.
Understand this today, therefore, and take it to heart:
The Lord is God indeed, in heaven above as on earth below,

teaches misleading doctrines or empty speculation about the Law of God. As a penal code, the aim of the Law is to make
provision not for good people but for offenders: for murderers, for people
who are immoral with women or with boys or with men, for liars and for
perjurers
- and for everything else that is contrary to sound teaching.
Jesus, please help law offenders not to offend
again,
and to make up for what they have done

Matthew
14.13-21: Once after Jesus had been healing and
teaching many people all afternoon, his disciples said to him
"It's getting late and the people need to go and eat".
Jesus replied "They don't need to go. You feed them".
The disciples said "We have only 5 loaves and 2 fish". Jesus got the people to sit on the grass.
There were about 20,000 of them.
Then he blessed the loaves and fish. He handed the loaves and fish to his
disciples.
His disciples gave them to the crowd.
Everyone had plenty to eat.
They even had 12 baskets of leftovers.
Jesus, please
make leaders do more
to help the
starving people of the world

Tues Nov 6
Yesterday I spent 8 hours at Tai Lam women's prison ... and was sad to meet two new drug mules from Peru, arrested a couple of weeks ago at HK airport. Which is why the anti-drug campaign must keep going. Possible connection? .... Peru was the only country on my January trip to South America where I was unable to do some media publicity. Of this year's seven arrivals from South America, 3 are from Peru.
My article in today's Ming Pao newspaper has the topic: Divali ... and the Melbourne Cup!. It is on Ming Pao website - click "Australian in HK". Text without recording

Readings are from
Simple Bible
Deuteronomy 1: After wandering in the desert for 40 years,
the Israelites reached the land of Canaan.
Moses then assembled the people
and recalled all that had happened over the past 40 years: "When God first told us to take this land,
I said to you: Do not be afraid. God goes ahead of you
and will be fighting on your side, as he did in Egypt.
I also said how God carried you, as a man carries his child,
all along the road you travelled to this place.
But you did not trust God
and God closed the door to Canaan for 40 years,
causing us to wander in the desert until now."
Dear God, please help me to
trust you a bit more
My
recording of this reading
Psalms
79-80: O God, the nations have invaded your sacred
land,
they have profaned your holy temple.
They have made Jerusalem a heap of ruins. We have become the taunt of our
neighbours,
the mockery and scorn of those who surround us. How long, O Lord, will all this last?
How long will this sorrow keep going? Do not hold the guilt of our ancestors against
us.
If their guilt is somehow influencing our situation now
please give peace and healing to everyone and everything
in our history. Let the groans of the prisoners come before
you.
Let your strong arm reprieve those condemned to die. O Lord, our God, help us and save us.
Let your face shine on us and we shall be saved.
Lord, please heal any problems
in my family tree

Thessalonians 3.10-16:
We gave you a rule when we were with you:
not to let anyone have any food if he refused to do any work. Yet we hear that some of you are living in
idleness, doing no work themselves but interfering with everyone else's
work. In the Lord Jesus Christ, we order and call on
such people
to go on quietly working and earning the food that they eat. Never grow tired of doing what is right.
May the Lord of peace give you peace always
and everywhere.
Jesus, don't let me interfere in other
people's business

Matthew
14.1-12:
Not long after Jesus began traveling and teaching,
King Herod arrested John the Baptist and put him in prison. This was because John had told Herod he was breaking the Law
by living with Herodias, his brother's wife. During a birthday party for Herod,
the daughter of Herodias danced. Her dancing so pleased Herod
that he said he would give her anything she wanted. Herodias told her to ask for the head of John the Baptist on a dish.
Herod then had John beheaded. John's disciples came and buried the body.
Jesus, please give the world
good leaders, and protect people from bad leaders like Herod
