After spending some time at two High Court trials yesterday morning, I went to the Australian Consulate to vote in the Victorian elections. The party I put last is the party which not long ago was responsible for the worst abortion laws in the world, allowing a baby to be aborted at the time of delivery. Ironic ... that party is called the "Labor" Party?

Deuteronomy 19-21: Moses' teaching: "A life for a life, an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a hand for a hand, a foot for a foot. When you go to war, the following men are excused from fighting: a man who has not yet dedicated his newly-built house;
a man who has planted a vineyard and not yet enjoyed its fruit; a man who is engaged to be married; a man who is fearful and faint of heart
.

Dear Lord, help me to understand how Jesus taught us to love our enemies and not to take revenge

My recording of this reading

Psalm 93: The Lord is king, with majesty enrobed, he has girded himself with power. The world you made firm, not to be moved. From all eternity, O Lord, you are. The oceans and coastlines of the world are majestic and powerful. But greater than the roar of mighty waters, more glorious than the surging of the sea is the Lord on high. Such a Lord, such a Creator, such a God. Truly your decrees are to be trusted. Holiness is fitting to your house O Lord, always and everywhere.
We praise you, Lord, our Creator

Listen

1 Timothy 6.17-19: Warn people who are rich in this world's goods that they are not to look down on others. Tell them not to set their hopes on money, but on God who, out of his riches, gives us all we need for happiness. Tell rich people to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will have a healthy account in the Bank of Heaven
Jesus, please help rich people do more to help poor people

Listen

Matthew 18.21-35: Peter asked Jesus "How many times must I forgive someone? 7 times?"  Jesus answered "Not 7, but 77 times. For the kingdom of heaven is like a king who cancelled the huge debt of one of his servants. But that same servant refused to cancel the tiny debt of one of his fellow servants. So the king said to the servant: 'When you appealed to me, I had pity on you and cancelled your big debt.  But you refused to have pity on your fellow servant who asked you for mercy. Therefore you must now go to prison until your big debt is paid.' If you refuse to forgive other people, you are making yourself ineligible for God's forgiveness."
Jesus, please help me to forgive other people, just as you forgive me....many times each day

Deuteronomy 16-18: Moses' teaching: "Remember the special feasts and days that you must observe. Appoint judges for the people. Do not pervert the law. You must be fair, you must not take bribes. No bribes, no corruption. Do not practise divination, soothsaying. No one may be an augur or sorcerer. Do not use charms, do not consult ghosts or spirits. Instead, be entirely faithful to the Lord your God.
Dear Lord, please help people avoid astrology and fortune tellers

My recording of this reading

Psalm 92: It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to make music to your name, O Most High, to proclaim your love in the morning, and your truth right through the night. Your deeds, O Lord, have made me glad. For the work of your hands, I shout with joy. To me you give the wild ox's strength. You anoint me with the purest oil. May we love and praise you right through our lives, right till the end of our days. May we keep on proclaiming your goodness, proclaiming that in you, our rock, there is only goodness.
Lord, it is right and fitting to love and praise you

Listen

1 Timothy 6.11-13: As a man of God, avoid things like greed and disputes. You must aim to be a saint, filled with faith and love, patient and gentle. Fight the good fight of the faith, and win for yourself eternal life. Be a constant witness to goodness and truth, like Jesus who spoke up as a witness for the truth in front of Pontius Pilate.
Jesus, help me be a witness to goodness and truth

Listen

Matthew 18.1-9: One day Jesus heard his disciples arguing about which one of them was the most important. Jesus got a little child to sit in front of them, and said "If you want to be great in God's eyes, become child-like. In fact, unless you become child-like, you won't get to heaven. And make sure you never cause harm to children like this one. Remember, the protecting angels of children are in the presence of my Father in heaven."
Jesus, please help me to be more child-like, and please don't let me ever cause harm to children

Reflection on the above readings: The first 3 readings today have the idea of something which has become a casualty in today's world - "truth".

Last Friday a Pakistani prisoner at Lai Chi Kok who had been arrested a few days previously, asked me to go to his flat (not far from my home) and find his ... 9-month old cat! Man couldn't remember phone number of his landlord ... and had no friends to help him. Was worried that cat would be starving. So I went to the flat last Saturday (usual story ... an incomplete address ... much patience and determination needed to find the flat) .... landlord not to be found .... so I left message with neighboring landlord. Yesterday got message to say cat had been located and was being given to care of RSPCA.

Australian parishes supporting World Day of the Poor

Readers know that I rarely ask for money on this website. But since it's World Day of the Poor, may I invite you to join me in a special project: helping needy families in Venezuela where many people often don't even have one meal a day, from where 3 million refugees have fled, where people can't afford medicine and school items for their children. Lately I've been sending, through Western Union, some help to the families of Venezuelan prisoners in Hong Kong. I actually met a dozen such families when I was in Venezuela in January this year .... when I saw people forming long lines to buy a loaf of bread. If you'd like to help me help those families, please let me know: jdwomi@gmail.com   Prisoners in HK (who earn about US$50 per month) are continually receiving messages from their families "please send us something to help us buy food".

Yesterday at Lai Chi Kok men's prison I learnt of more cases of people being "set up" by Drug Lords in association with Customs/police. How much longer will this tragic game continue? One man, a Pakistani asylum seeker, was offered a job (working illegally) in a shop by a Pakistani friend (who he didn't know had a reputation as a Drug Lord). It was a set up. On the man's second day at the shop a parcel was delivered by Customs officers disguised as delivery people. The man phoned his friend to ask for advice. Friend gave him details to verify parcel was for owner of shop. Man signed and was immediately arrested. For this game, the Drug Lords get protection and Customs officers get promotion. And victims get around 10 years in prison. See Two entrapment stories

Deuteronomy 14-15: Moses' teaching: "There are certain animals you must not eat, including pigs. At the end of every 7 years, you must cancel all debts. If there is a poor person among you, do not harden your heart or close your hand against that person.
Always be generous to anyone in need
."

Dear Lord, make me more generous towards poor people

My recording of this reading

Psalm 91: He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High says to the Lord "you are my refuge in whom I trust". The Lord will hide you and protect you. Under his wings you will find refuge. You will not fear any night time terror, nor any attack during the day. Upon you no evil shall fall, no plague approach where you dwell. For you has he commanded his angels to keep you safe in all your ways.
Dear God, thank you for your protection day and night

1 Timothy 6.3-10: Some people, because of ignorance and pride, have a craze for questioning and arguing about everything. Such a craze breeds jealousy and mistrust and unending disputes. People who have a craving to be wealthy are a prey to temptation. They get trapped into all sorts of foolish and dangerous schemes which ruin their lives. The love of money is the root of all evils. It can cause people to leave the faith
Jesus, help me be content with a simple lifestyle

Matthew 17.14-20: A man went down on his knees and pleaded with Jesus: "Lord, please help my son. He is crazy and does crazy things like falling into fire and into water. I asked  your disciples to heal him but they were not able to." There was an evil spirit oppressing the boy, so Jesus ordered the spirit to leave the boy. The boy was healed immediately. Jesus' disciples asked him
"Why were we unable to expel that spirit?" Jesus answered "Because your faith is not strong enough."

Jesus, please increase my faith, so that my prayers can be of more help to other people

Some good news for a change from the Court of Appeal! From a friend who was in court yesterday:

Just to inform you that Court of Appeal allowed Zhou Li Mei (周禮梅)'s appeal this morning. This is the second time she overturned her conviction of TDD charge and 21 years imprisonment sentence. It is very likely that she will face a retrial. Prosecution has 7 days to make an application for retrial.

C&E found 800g heron in her luggage when she arrived at HK Airport in 2012. She denied she knew there were drugs in her luggage. She said an African male in China, whose name is CJ, invited her to have a trip to Malaysia and asked her to bring some samples of clothes back to China. Another African Sam gave the luggage to her in Malaysia.

Deuteronomy 12-13: Moses continued his teaching: "Be faithful in keeping all the instructions that I give you, so that you and your children after you may be happy, always doing what is good and right in the eyes of the Lord your God. If anyone, even someone from your own family, tries to get you to worship a false god, have nothing to do with that person"
Dear God, please don't let anyone influence me to forget you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 90: O Lord you have been our refuge from one generation to the next. Before the earth or the world existed, you are God, without beginning or end. For you, a thousand years are like yesterday, come and gone so quickly. We humans have a short life, our life is over like a sigh. Our span is 70 years, or 80 for those who are strong. Make us know the shortness of our life, that we may gain wisdom of heart. In the morning, fill us with your love. Give success to the work of our hands.
Lord, help us realize the shortness of our life, that we may live our lives more wisely

1 Timothy 5.19-23: Never accept an accusation brought against a church elder unless it is supported by two or three witnesses. If an elder is at fault, reprimand him publicly as a warning to others. Be fair to everyone and never be influenced by favoritism. As regards your frequent illnesses, I suggest you give up drinking only water, and have a little wine for the sake of your digestion
Jesus, help church workers to be fair and impartial

Matthew 17.1-8: One day Jesus took his disciples Peter, James and John up a high mountain. On the mountain Jesus' whole appearance changed. His face shone like the sun. His clothes were as white as snow. The  prophets Moses and Elijah appeared and spoke with him. Peter said to Jesus "Lord, how good it is for us to be here!" Then a bright cloud covered them with its shadow. From the cloud came a voice: "This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him." The disciples bowed to the ground. When they got up, they saw only Jesus in his normal appearance.
Jesus, Beloved Son of God, how good it is to spend time with you in prayer.

Usually for breakfast I just have some fruit and cereal. But at breakfast yesterday for the final day of the 4-day O.M.I. in-service I couldn't resist the sight of toast, bacon and eggs. ..with a mug of green tea. I can't remember the last time I had bacon and eggs for breakfast. At first I felt a bit embarrassed as I sat down with two slices of toast, two fried eggs and three large slices of bacon .... until another member of the group sat down beside me with ... 4 slices of bacon!

Thu Nov 15

Today is the final day of our 4-day O.M.I. meeting in Sheung Shui near the border with China. Has been good to be here with 14 other Oblates and our guest speaker. Basic aim has been to "keep the fire burning for serving other people, especially the poor". At the meeting, as for all my travels these days, I have 11 notebooks with me .... my prison notebooks (6 for women, 5 for men) .... because almost every day I am contacted by legal teams or others concerning prisoners.

Deuteronomy 11: Moses continued his speech to the people: "You must love the Lord your God. Remember this day, how it was you who heard these words, not your children. It is your eyes that have seen the great works God has done. Keep the Lord's commandments, so that you may have strength to conquer the land God is giving you. That land is a land of hills and valleys watered by rain from heaven. If you love the Lord your God with all your heart the Lord will give your land its rain in due season, autumn and spring, so that you may harvest your corn, your wine and your oil. But if you forget the Lord your God and worship other gods, then the heavens will be closed and produce no rain. See, I set before you today a blessing and a curse: a blessing if you obey the commandments of the Lord our God; a curse if you disobey the commandments of the Lord our God."
Dear Lord, please help us to obey you and never forget you, and please give rain to places that urgently need it

Psalm 89: I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord. Of this I am sure, that your love lasts for ever. The heavens proclaim your wonders, O Lord. The heavens are yours, the world is yours. Blessed the people who find joy in you, who walk, O Lord, in the light of your face.
Thank you, Lord, for our beautiful world

1 Timothy 5.1-14: Do not speak harshly to a man older than yourself, but advise him as you would your own father. Treat younger men as brothers. Treat older women as you would your mother. Treat younger women with propriety, as if they were your sisters. Be considerate to widows. If a widow wishes to be enrolled as a church worker, she must be at least 60 years old, the wife of one husband. As regards young widows, it's best if they re-marry
Jesus, help church workers to be kind and caring

Matthew 16.21-28: Jesus now began explaining to his disciples how he must go to Jerusalem to suffer, die and rise from the dead. He also said "If you want to be my disciple, you must deny yourself, take up your own cross, and follow me. Selfishness will ruin your life.
Self-sacrificing will bless your life. What use is it to have everything in this world yet miss out on Heaven?"

Jesus, please help me find my life by losing it in service of others

These few days I am on a 4-day, 3-night OMI in-service meeting at a retreat house in Seung Shui, near the border of China. Theme of meeting is "interculturality", led by Fr Anthony Gittins from the UK. A most relevant topic given the unhealthy trend today in many parts of the world of an "Us" vs "Them" mentality. (Google "Fr Anthony Gittins" for YouTube and other items)

Deuteronomy 10:  Moses continued his speech to the people: "And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you? Only this: to love and honor the Lord, to follow all his ways, to serve him with all your heart and all your soul, to keep the commandments and laws of the Lord that for your good I set before you today. Circumcise your heart and be obstinate no longer. The Lord your God is great and good. He it is you must praise, he is your God. It is he who sees justice done for the orphan and widow, who loves the stranger and gives him food and clothing. You too must love the stranger, for you also were strangers in the land of Egypt."

Psalm 88: Lord my God, day and night I call to you for help. Please turn your ear to my cry. For my soul is filled with evils. My life is on the brink of the grave. I am reckoned as one in the tomb. I have reached the end of my strength. Will your love be told in the grave?

1 Timothy 4.12-16: Do not let people disregard you because you are young. Be an example to all the believers in the way you speak and act. You have in you a spiritual gift which was given you when the church elders prayed over you with the laying on of hands.
Do not let this gift go unused. Take great care about what you do and what you teach. In this way you will save both yourself and those who listen to you.

Jesus, help me be a good example to other people

Matthew 16.13-20: One day Jesus asked his disciples "Who do people say the Son of Man is?" The disciples replied "Some people say you are one of the famous prophets". Jesus then asked them "And what about you. Who do you say I am?" Peter answered "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God". Jesus then said to Peter "Blessed are you, for my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. So I now say to you: you are Peter ('the rock') and on this rock I will build my church. I will give you the keys of the kingdom."
