Tues Nov 27

Yesterday morning I spent a couple of hours at the High Court for the case of an an asylum seeker set up on a drug charge by a Nigerian Drug Lord. In the afternoon I spent a few hours at Lai Chi Kok men's prison, mainly meeting Malaysian inmates in preparation for a trip to Malaysia, God willing, after Christmas - to visit inmates' families and to do publicity to stop drug mules coming from Malaysia to HK. The number of Malaysian drug mules arrested over the past two years in HK for international drug trafficking is greater than the combined number for the whole of Africa and the whole of South America! (... mainly because security at Kuala Lumpur is a joke)

Deuteronomy 32: The Song of Moses: Listen, O heavens, and I will speak; let the earth hear the words on my lips. May my teaching fall like the rain, my speech descend like the dew, like rain drops on the young green, like showers falling on the grass. For I shall praise the name of the Lord. O give glory to this God of ours! The Rock - his deeds are perfect, and all his ways are just, a faithful God, without deceit, a God who is right and just. Those whom he begot unblemished have become crooked, false, perverse. Is it thus you repay the Lord, O senseless and foolish people? Is he not your father who created you, he who made you, on whom you depend? Remember the days of old, consider the years that are past; ask you father and he will show you,
ask your elders and they will tell you. When the Most High gave the nations their heritage and disposed men according to his plan, in fixing the boundaries of the nations he thought first of Israel's sons. For Israel was the Lord's possession, Jacob the one he had chosen. God found him in a wilderness, in fearful, desolate wastes; he surrounded him, he lifted him up, he kept him as the apple of his eye. Like an eagle that watches its nest, that hovers over its young, so he spread his wings; he took him, placed him on his outstretched wings. The Lord alone was his guide and no other god was with him.

Dear Lord, thank you for life and all your love and care

Psalm 98: Sing a new song to the Lord for he has worked wonders. His right hand has brought salvation. The Lord has made known his salvation. He has shown his justice to the nations. He has remembered his truth and love for the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Shout to the Lord all the earth, ring out your joy. Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp, with the sound of music. Let the sea, the world and all peoples acclaim the King, the Lord. Let the rivers clap their hands and the hills ring out their joy at the presence of the Lord, for he comes to rule the earth. He will rule the world with justice and the peoples with fairness.
Lord, may all peoples in all countries know your love and goodness

2 Timothy 3.2-5: For sure, some people will be self-centered and greedy; disobedient and ungrateful to parents; heartless, difficult to get along with; slanderers, profligates and enemies of everything that is good. They will keep up the outward appearance of religion, but will have rejected its inner power. Have nothing to do with people like that
Jesus, may my faith be real, not just something external

Matthew 20.1-16: Jesus said to his disciples: The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out at dawn to hire workers for his vineyard. He agreed to pay them the normal daily wage. Then about 9am he went again to the market place. He saw more men without a job.  He got them also to go to his vineyard. He promised to pay them a fair wage. About noon and again about 3pm he once more went to the market place and employed two more groups of men. About 5pm he went one final time and employed one last group of men. At sunset when the men came to be paid, the owner paid everyone a normal day's wage. This made the dawn group unhappy. They grumbled and said "We have done a full day's work in the heat. Yet we got the same as those who did only one hour's work. This is not fair!" The owner replied "I am paying you what we agreed to. Why do you begrudge my generosity?"
Jesus, please help me not to be jealous of your gifts to others

Reflection on the above readings: God's generosity is so great that from a human point of view it's too generous, unfairly generous!

Two days ago I received a phone call from a security guard at the building where a prisoner's missing cat was discovered about a week ago. Guard said he could be contacted for info re a kind person who is looking after the cat. So yesterday at Lai Chi Kok men's prison I visited the prisoner and gave him his cat's updated number

Several local HK men are in prison in the Philippines and have no one to visit them. Men are in Olongapo City jail, about 3 hours from Manila. If anyone can help find a visitor, please let me know: jdwomi@gmail.com

Yesterday as I continued reading "Dare Not Linger" (the follow up to Nelson Mandela's "Long Road To Freedom", I saw on the final page of Chapter 2 these famous words from the US writer James Baldwin "... it is ultimately fatal to create too many victims" .... and I couldn't help thinking how the HK government - at the behest of Beijing - is going down this path: persecuting anyone and everyone who has democracy on their boots ... creating martyrs/victims.

At times we have to be like the father of the prodigal son, who always keeps his door open so that when the son returns, he can readily pass through it. The Church is called to be the house of the Father, with doors always wide open.

Deuteronomy 31: Moses said to the people: "I am 120 years old and can no longer come and go as I will. The Lord has told me I will not cross the Jordan." Moses then said to Joshua in the presence of all the people: "Be strong, stand firm. you are going with this people into the land promised by the Lord. The Lord himself will lead you; he will be with you; he will not fail you or desert you. Have no fear; do not be disheartened by anything.
Dear Lord, please help me remember that you are with me every day. Please don't let anything or anyone dishearten me

Psalm 97: The Lord is king, let earth rejoice, the many coastlands be glad. Cloud and darkness are his robes. His throne is justice and goodness. The skies proclaim his goodness. All peoples see his glory. Let those who serve idols be ashamed. Let all creation worship  the Creator. Light shines forth for good people and joy for the upright of heart. Rejoice in the Lord, all good people. Give glory to his holy name.
Lord, you indeed are God of the universe

2 Timothy 2.14-25: Remind everyone to avoid useless debates and discussions. These cause scandal and loss of faith. Be available for the Master to use you for any good work. Focus on goodness, faith, love and peace. Avoid futile speculations which only lead to quarrels. A servant of the Lord is not to engage in quarrels, but should be kind to everyone, a good teacher, and patient. Be gentle with anyone you have to correct.
Jesus, please help me avoid useless discussions and arguments

Matthew 19.27-29: On behalf of all the disciples, Peter asked Jesus "What about us?  We have left everything to follow you." Jesus replied "You will be leaders in the church on earth. Jesus, please bless all Gospel workers

c.f. readings for Christ the King

Daniel 7: Once when Daniel was asleep, he had a vision of heaven: "Thrones were put in place and one of great age took his seat. His robe was white as snow, his hair as pure as wool. A thousand thousand waited on him, ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him. Then coming on the clouds of heaven was one like a son of man. On him was conferred  glory and kingship, and people of all nations became his servants. His kingship is eternal. His empire will never be destroyed."
Jesus, please help me understand that you are the "Son of Man" whose kingship is eternal

My recording of this reading

Psalm 93: The Lord is king, with majesty enrobed, he has girded himself with power. The world you made firm, not to be moved. From all eternity, O Lord, you are. The oceans and coastlines of the world are majestic and powerful. But greater than the roar of mighty waters, more glorious than the surging of the sea is the Lord on high. Such a Lord, such a Creator, such a God. Truly your decrees are to be trusted. Holiness is fitting to your house O Lord, always and everywhere.
We praise you, Lord, our Creator

Revelation 1: From John, to the seven churches of Asia province: grace and peace to you from him who is, who was, and who is to come, from the seven spirits at his throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the First-born from the dead, the Ruler of the kings of the earth.
Jesus, faithful witness, please help me to be a faithful witness to your love and truth

Recording

John 18.33-37: "Are you the king of the Jews?" Pilate asked. Jesus replied, "Do you ask this of your own accord, or have others spoken to you about me?" Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew? It is your own people and the chief priests who have handed you over to me: what have you done?" Jesus replied, "Mine is not a kingdom of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my men would have fought to prevent my being surrendered to the Jews. But my kingdom is not of this kind." "So you are a king then?" said Pilate. "It is you who say it" answered Jesus. "Yes, I am a king. I was born for this, I came into the world for this: to bear witness to the truth; and all who are on the side of truth listen to my voice."
Jesus, please help me bear witness to the truth

A beautiful prayer for the Feast of Christ the King:

Jesus, I acknowledge you as Universal King.
All that has been created has been made for you.
Exercise over me all the rights that you have.
I renew my Baptismal promises, renouncing Satan and all his works
and I promise to try to live as a good Christian.
Divine Heart of Jesus, I offer you all my actions
that all hearts may recognize your love and know the peace of your kingdom.

Updated: Two Fridays ago a Pakistani prisoner at Lai Chi Kok who had been arrested a few days previously, asked me to go to his flat (not far from my home) and find his ... 9-month old cat! Man couldn't remember phone number of his landlord ... and had no friends to help him. Was worried that cat would be starving. So I went to the flat the following day (usual story ... an incomplete address ... much patience and determination needed to find the flat) .... landlord not to be found .... so I left message with neighboring landlord. Yesterday I got phone call to say that cat did not go to RSPA (as I originally heard) but is now in loving care of a new owner. Prisoner will now sleep easily. Could not sleep for a week ... not worried about himself, but about his beloved cat. (Disclosure? All prisoners are cats: Cat A, Cat B, Cat C etc)

Deuteronomy 29-30 (a): Moses called the whole of Israel together and said to them: "Keep the words of this covenant and observe them and you will thrive in all you do. Let there be no man or woman among you, no clan or tribe, whose heart turns away from the Lord your God to go and serve the gods of the nations. If ever you are scattered from the land God is giving you, God will bring you back when your hearts turn back to him. The Lord will circumcise your hearts until you love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul.
01

(b): This law I enjoin on you today is not beyond your strength or beyond your reach. It is not in heaven, so that you need to wonder 'who will go up to heaven for us and bring it down to us so that we may hear it and keep it?' Nor is it beyond the seas, so that you need to wonder 'who will cross the sea for us and bring it back to us, so that we may hear it and keep it?' No, the Word is very near to you. It is in your mouth and in your heart for your observance.
02

(c): See, today I set before you life and prosperity, death and disaster. If you obey the commandments of the Lord your God,
if you love the Lord your God and follow his ways, if you keep his commandments, his laws, his customs, you will live and increase, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land which you are entering to make your own. But if your heart strays, if you refuse to listen, if you let yourself be drawn into worshipping other gods and serving them, I tell you today, you will most certainly perish; you will not live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess.
03

(d): I call heaven and earth to witness against you today: I set before you life or death, blessing or curse. Choose life, then, so that you and your descendants may live in the love of the Lord your God, obeying his voice, clinging to him. For in this your life consists, and on this depends your long stay in the land which the Lord swore to your fathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob he would give them."

Deuteronomy 27-28: Moses' teaching: "Be silent, Israel, and listen. Today you have become a people for the Lord your God. A curse on anyone who breaks the commandments of the Lord. Blessings on everyone who keeps the commandments of the Lord.
If you obey the voice of the Lord your God you will be blessed in the town and blessed in the country. Blessed will be the fruit of your body, the fruit of your soil, the issue of your livestock. Blessed will you be coming in, and blessed going out. But if you do not obey the voice of the Lord your God, you will be accursed in the town and accursed in the country. Accursed will be the fruit of your body, the fruit of your soil and the issue of your livestock

Psalm 96: O sing a new song to the Lord. Sing to the Lord, all the earth. O sing to the Lord, bless his name. Proclaim his help day by day. Tell among the nations his glory, and his wonders among all the peoples. It was the Lord who made the heavens.
Give the Lord, you families of peoples, give the Lord glory and honor. Bring an offering and enter his temple. Worship the Lord in his sacred place. Let the heavens rejoice and earth be glad. Let the sea and all within it thunder praise. Let the land and all it bears rejoice, all the trees of the forest shout for joy. Everyone and everything, give the Lord glory and honor.

Remember the Good News that I carry: "Jesus Christ risen from the dead, sprung from the race of David". On account of this Good News I am chained up like a criminal. Matthew 19.16-26: A young man asked Jesus "Master, what do I have to do to get to Heaven?" Jesus replied "Keep the commandments: do not kill;  do not commit adultery; honor your father and mother; care for others as much as you care about yourself". The young man said "I have kept all these commandments. What else do I need to do?" Jesus said "If you want to do something really special with your life, go and sell all your possessions, give the money to the poor, then come and follow me as one of my disciples". When the young man heard these words he went away sad, because he was very rich. Jesus then said to his disciples "It is hard for a rich person to get to Heaven".
Jesus,  don't let riches endanger my eternal life

Thu Nov 22    USA Thanksgiving

Yesterday with another member of the NGO "Voice for Prisoners" I attended a most encouraging lunch meeting with the Consul General of Colombia in Hong Kong, then a follow up meeting to discuss our "No More (Drug) Mules" campaign on Facebook which has had a big following in Latin America and surely has something to do with the fact that only 6 drug mules from the whole of South America have been arrested at HK airport this year (compared with greatly higher figures in recent years). One item of concern at the meeting was the presence of more than 2 million Venezuelan refugees in Colombia and Brazil .... desperate for money .... easy targets for the Nigerian Drug Lords looking for vulnerable people to recruit as drug mules. "No More Mules" will try to do publicity through the FB page of a local radio station on the Colombian-Vz border.

Deuteronomy 26: Moses' teaching: "When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, you must take the first-fruits of your produce to the priest then in office and say 'Today I declare to the Lord my God that I have come to the land the Lord swore to our fathers he would give us.' After the priest receives your offering, you must declare: 'My father was a wandering Aramaean. He went down to Egypt to find refuge there, few in number. But then he became a nation, great and strong. The Egyptians ill-treated us, they gave us no peace and inflicted harsh slavery on us. But we called on the Lord our God who heard our voice and saw our misery, toil and oppression. The Lord our God then brought us out of Egypt with mighty hand and outstretched arm, with signs and wonders. He brought us here and gave us this land, a land where milk and honey flow. So I now bring the first-fruits of my produce that you, Lord, have given me'. You are then to share these gifts with your household
and with the Levite and stranger who live among you
."

Dear Lord, help me to show gratitude for all your gifts, by sharing what I have with those less fortunate than I

Psalm 95: Come ring out our joy to the Lord. Hail the rock who saves us. Let us come before him giving thanks. With songs let us praise the Lord. A mighty God is the Lord, a great king above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth. The heights of the mountains are his. To him belongs the sea, for he made it, and the dry land shaped by his hands. Come in, let us bow and bend low. Let us kneel before the God who made us. For he is our God and we are the people who belong to his pasture.
Lord, you are our Creator. Our life comes from you. We praise and love you, Lord

2 Timothy 1.6-8: I remind you to fan into a flame the gift that God gave you when I prayed over you with the laying on of hands. God's gift was not a spirit of timidity, but the Spirit of power, and love and self-control. Never be ashamed of witnessing to the Lord. Like me and with me, put up with hardships for the sake of the Good News.

Matthew 19.13-15: Some people brought their little children to Jesus. They hoped Jesus would  put his hands on the children and bless them. Jesus' disciples told the people to go away and not bother Jesus. But Jesus said "Don't prevent the little children from coming to me". Then he put his hands on them and blessed them.
Jesus, please help all children to know you from their earliest days. Please don't let parents prevent children from coming to you.

Reflection on the above Bible readings: It would be unthinkable for a father and mother not to allow their children to speak to the children's grandparents .... to say "wait till they grow up and let them decide for themselves if they'd like to talk to their grandparents". Yet some parents say "wait till they grown up and let them decide for themselves if they'd like to talk to their Creator"

The Lord gives them peace in troubled times. When cares increase in my heart, God's consolation calms my soul.
Lord, when cares and troubles increase, please  help us to trust in you.

2 Timothy 1.1-5: From Paul, appointed by God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, to Timothy, dear child of mine in the faith, wishing you grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Christ Jesus our Lord. I always remember your sincere faith. It came first to live in your grandmother Lois, then in your mother Eunice, and now in yourself
Jesus, thank you for parents who pass on the faith to their children

Listen

Matthew 19.1-9: One day some religious leaders put Jesus to the test by asking him "Is it against the Law of Moses for a man to divorce his wife?" Jesus replied "God created male and female, for the two to become united as one body.  What God has united, no one should separate." The leaders then asked "But why did Moses allow divorce?" Jesus replied "Moses allowed divorce because people were so hard of heart.  But divorce was not God's plan. So I say to you, anyone who walks out on their partner and marries someone else, is guilty of adultery".
Jesus, please help married people stay together

Reflection on the above readings: First reading and Gospel both mention adultery ... Jesus concerned that Moses' teaching had been watered down (... although St Paul allowed divorce and re-marriage in special cases)

Frightening YouTube reports: LGBT radical impact on educational institutions (No. 5); LGBT infiltrating churches (No. 6); US corporations massively supporting LGBT agenda (No. 7). What has happened in the US is now starting to happen in other places. Some day our children will ask "why didn't you do more to stop this evil?"
