Tues Dec 4

Yesterday morning I was at the High Court to support a Nigerian man charged with drug trafficking .... set up by a Nigerian "brother" (?) who is a police informer and thereby protected by the police. Last night I was guest speaker at a happy gathering of HK present and future deacons .... who, God bless them, have a keen interest in prison ministry.

My article in today's Ming Pao newspaper has the topic: Our world needs leaders like Mandela. It is on Ming Pao website - click "Australian in HK". Text without recording

Pope Francis - The Joy of the Gospel No. 51:
I exhort everyone to an "ever watchful scrutiny of the signs of the times". This is in fact a grave responsibility, since certain present realities, unless effectively dealt with, are capable of setting off processes of dehumanization which would then be hard to reverse.

Joshua 4: After the Israelites crossed the Jordan River, Joshua selected 12 men, one from each tribe, and told them to get 12 stones from the middle of the Jordan. The 12 stones were set up at Gilgal, east of Jericho, as a reminder of how God had helped the Israelites cross the river. When children in the future asked "What do these stones mean?" parents were to answer: "The waters of the Jordan separated and stopped flowing when the Lord's Sacred Chest entered the river. These 12 stones are a permanent reminder of this." As soon as the Israelites had finished crossing the Jordan, its waters immediately started flowing again.
Dear Lord, please don't let me ever forget the many times you have helped me cross "Jordan" rivers

My recording of this reading

Psalm 103: My soul, give thanks to the Lord. All my being, bless his holy name. My soul, give thanks to the Lord and never forget all his blessings. It is he who forgives all your guilt, who heals every one of your ills. It is he who fills your life with good things, renewing your youth like an eagle's life. The Lord is compassion and love, slow to anger and rich in mercy. As the heavens are high above the earth so strong is his love for those who love him. As far as the East is from the West, so far does he remove our sins. As a father has compassion on his children, the Lord has pity on all who love and honor him. Give thanks to the Lord, all his angels, who heed the voice of his word. Give thanks to the Lord, everyone and everything. My soul, give thanks to the Lord!
Thank you, Lord, for your love and compassion

Titus 2.1-10: It's your job to preach the behavior that goes with sound doctrine: the older men should be reserved, dignified, moderate, sound in faith and love. The older women should be teachers of good behavior, avoiding scandalmongering and too much wine. They should be an example to the younger women in their love for their husbands and children. Younger men should be moderate, with yourself setting an example of sincerity for them. Slaves should be obedient to their masters, and avoid petty thieving.
Jesus,  help me be a good person, a good Christian

Matthew 22.34-40: In Jerusalem a religious leader asked Jesus "Which is the most important commandment?" Jesus replied
"You must love the Lord your God with all your heart. And you must care as much about others as you care about yourself. These are the two most important commandments. All other commandments depend on these two."

Jesus, please help me love you with all my heart and care for others as much as I care about myself

Mon Dec 3

After my usual Chinese Mass at Yau Ma Tei yesterday morning I packed up for an English Mass at Lo Wu Women's prison. Then back to Yau Ma Tei for the usual gathering for the poor. Then time width some dear friends from Zhaoqing who, like many other Mainlanders these days, are checking out HK via the new bridge from Macau. And these friends this morning will also check out the new fast train service for a speedy trip to Guangzhou, then 30 minutes later a train to Zhaoqing.

466 years ago today, in 1552, on a remote island off the coast of China, Saint Francis Xavier died. He could see China some 14km across the sea, but could not enter it. In the months before he died, he offered up his suffering that someone else might follow him and enter China. On October 6, 1552, Matteo Ricci was born in Italy. Xavier's prayer was answered two months before he died. With hindsight, we can see that for the spread of the Gospel in China, Ricci's cultural approach was a more suitable missionary method than Xavier's direct evangelisation. Maybe this is why God allowed Xavier to leave the scene without entering China.

Xavier died on the island today known as Shangchuan. I've been privileged to visit there a number of times: e.g. 1993 & 2005. But only after checking above Wiki article did I know that the name "Shangchuan" means "Saint John"!

Pope Francis - The Joy of the Gospel No. 49:
More than by fear of going astray, my hope is that we will be moved by the fear of remaining shut up within structures which give us a false sense of security, within rules which make us harsh judges, within habits which make us feel safe, while at our door people are starving and Jesus does not tire of saying to us: "Give them something to eat"

Joshua 3: Instructed by the Lord, Joshua told the people to go to the bank of the Jordan River. He told the priests carrying the Sacred Chest to stand in the river on the edge of the water. As soon as the feet of the priests touched the water, the river stopped flowing. The people then went across the dry river bed towards Jericho.
Dear God, please help me to cross rivers of difficulty, doubt, conflict etc

Psalm 102: O Lord, listen to my prayer in my distress. Do not hide your face from me. For my days are vanishing like smoke,
my bones burn away like a fire. I forget to eat my bread. My skin clings to my bones. All day long my foes revile me. Those who hate me use my name as a curse. But you, O Lord, will endure for ever. You will arise and have mercy on Sion. You will hear the groans of the prisoners and free those condemned to die. I pray to you: "Do not take me away before my time has come, you whose days last from age to age.

Lord, please help people who are in great distress

Titus 1.1-9: From Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to Titus, true child of mine in the faith we share, wishing you grace and peace from God the Father and from Christ Jesus our Saviour. The reason I left you behind in Crete was for you to appoint elders in every town: each of them a man of irreproachable character, married only once, not arrogant or hot-tempered, not a heavy drinker, not out to make money. A man who is hospitable and a friend of all that is good; sensible, devout, with a firm grasp of the Good News, a good teacher, able to refute people who argue against sound doctrine
Jesus, please help all pastors be good "elders"

Matthew 21.12-16: When Jesus arrived in Jerusalem, he went to the Temple. In the Temple there were money changers, and people selling pigeons. Jesus tipped over their tables and drove them out of the Temple. He said to them "My house is a house of prayer, but you have turned it into a place for robbery". Blind and lame people came to Jesus in the Temple. He healed them all. Then he went out of the city to the village of Bethany and spent the night there.
Jesus, please protect all places of prayer from corruption

After a series of escalator accidents in HK, the MTR (Metro) has non-stop audio warnings to passengers not to use (distracting) mobile phones when on an escalator. And there are signs everywhere telling people with baby prams to use a lift, not the escalator. Well, yesterday when I got back to Yau Ma Tei station from Lo Wu, as I took the escalator, in front of me was a woman with a baby in a pram ... and the mother, holding the pram at a delicate balance with one hand, was using her other hand ... chatting away on her mobile!

Pope Francis - The Joy of the Gospel No. 49:

c.f. readings for Advent 1

Jeremiah 33.14-16: See, the days are coming - it is the Lord who speaks - when I am going to fulfil the promise I made to the House of Israel and the House of Judah: "In those days and at that time, I will make a virtuous Branch grow for David, who shall practise honesty and integrity in the land. In those days Judah shall be saved and Israel shall dwell in confidence. And this is the name the city will be called: The-Lord-our-integrity."

My recording of this reading

Psalms 24-26: The Lord's is the earth and all its peoples. It is the Lord who is Creator of the universe. May all hearts open their doors to the Lord. Let him enter, the king of glory. Lord I hope in you all the day long. Forgive my sins and help me walk in your truth.
God my savior, teach me your way of truth

Listen

1 Thessalonians 4.1-11: We urge you and appeal to you in the Lord Jesus to make more and more progress in the kind of life you are meant to live. God wants you to be holy. He wants you to keep away from fornication. Live life peacefully. Get a decent job and earn your living.
Jesus, make me be a better person, a better Christian

Listen

Luke 21.3-38: Jesus said to his disciples that Jerusalem would be destroyed and its people scattered throughout the world. He also spoke of how his followers would be persecuted,  and of the end of the world: "The planets will be shaken, nations will be in agony,  bewildered by the force of the oceans. Then they will see me coming in a cloud with great power and glory. To prepare for your own end of earthly life, stay faithful to prayer and goodness. Don't let your heart be coarsened by debauchery, drunkenness and material cares". In this his final week on earth, Jesus spent the daytime in the Temple, teaching. From early morning the people would gather round him to listen to him. Then he would spend the night on the Mount of Olives.
Jesus, help me be faithful to prayer and goodness

Reflection on the above readings: One theme we can think about for this Advent: making progress (1 Thessalonians, above). Whether it's losing weight, improving in sport or music or language or anything else .... there's one essential ingredient: daily effort! And it has a corollary: there's no short-cut!

Sat Dec 1

Yesterday I was at Tai Lam women's prison for 8 hours. Among the many prisoners I saw were three young Malaysians whose families I hope to visit in January in Malaysia. That brings to 23 the number of young Malaysians I have visited over the past 5 days in five different prisons: Lai Chi Kok men's prison, Pik Uk young men's prison, Lai King young women's prison, Lo women's prison and Tai Lam women's prison. Please God all this work will lead to a reduction in the number of drug mules coming to HK from Malaysia. .... 18 this year. And if we consider the saying "only 10% are caught" that means the real number who have come to HK this year is maybe around 100! And that's just HK. Young mules are constantly leaving Malaysia for other places like Vietnam, Macau, Taiwan, Thailand etc. So the figure of 100 might well be several hundred ...  one a day ... and why so many? Because security at Kuala Lumpur airport is a joke .... about which I hope Malaysian media will soon be lobbying for a radical improvement.

Pope Francis - The Joy of the Gospel No. 49: I prefer a Church which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a Church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its own security.

Joshua 2: Joshua sent two men as spies to explore the Jericho area. In Jericho they went to the house of Rahab the prostitute
The king of Jericho was told about this and he sent men to capture the two Israelites. But Rahab hid the men and told the king that they had already gone. Rahab said to the men in their hiding place on her roof: "I know that the Lord has given you this land. My people are afraid of you. We have heard how the Lord dried up the sea for your crossing out of Egypt. We have heard how you defeated the 2 kings Sihon and Og. Since I have shown you kindness I now ask you to show kindness to my family
and spare their lives when you attack this city."
The men agreed and told Rahab to tie a scarlet cord to her window so the Israelites would know her family were inside. Rahab helped the men go down from the window by a rope. The men stayed in the nearby hills for 3 days until it was safe to leave. The men returned to Joshua and told how the people of Jericho were already trembling at the thought of an Israelite attack.
Lord, please bless all women and girls caught up in prostitution

Psalm 101: My song is of mercy and justice. I sing to you, O Lord. I will try to walk with blameless heart. I will try to give my attention to what is good, not what is bad. People who slander others, people of proud looks, these will not be my friends. People who are good and do good, these will be my friends.
Dear Lord, please help me to avoid bad company

2 Timothy 4.6-8: As for me, my life of service to the Lord is nearly over. I have fought the good fight to the end. I have run the race to the finish. I have kept the faith. The Lord will soon give me the best of all prizes: eternal life in heaven. He will give it not only to me, but to everyone who has loved him sincerely in this life
Jesus, help me keep running to the finish line

Matthew 21.1-11: Jesus sat on a donkey colt for the trip down the hill from the Mount of Olives to the city of Jerusalem. This was as a prophet had predicted: "Look, your king is coming, humbly riding a peaceful donkey". Big crowds accompanied Jesus down the hill. People spread their clothes on the road as a sign of honor. People cut branches from the trees and waved them singing "Hosanna to the Son of David. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.  Hosanna in the highest!" People in the city asked "Who is he?" The crowd answered "This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee".
Jesus, may you be warmly welcomed by every place and every person in the world

Yesterday for my visit to Tai Lam women's prison, my trolley, as usual, was full of books for the prisoners .... Bibles and many dictionaries (English, Indonesian, Spanish). Fri Nov 30

I spent yesterday at Lo Wu women's prison, as usual coming away with a heavy lot of homework. One thought that is growing in my brain: the need for an a special investigator to be responsible for helping Indonesian prisoners, another person to be responsible for helping Thai prisoners, another for Bengali prisoners etc. I'm thinking of prisoners sentenced for drug trafficking. In each group there's much in common, even common recruiters. Responsible people would of course need to be able to speak the language of the group. Police/Customs/lawyers haven't got the time/interest to process all the information the inmates have about the Big Fish. Even High Court judges have been criticising police/Customs for not accessing/using information available from defendants. Suggestions welcome: jdwomi@gmail.com

Why are so many Americans dying from drug overdoses

c.f. readings for Feast of Saint Andrew

Isaiah 51-52: Pay attention to me, you peoples. Listen to me, you nations. The islands put their hope in the Lord. They put their trust in his strength. How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of one who brings good news, who proclaims peace and salvation, and tells Zion "Your God is king!" Break into shouts of joy, you ruins of Jerusalem, for the Lord is redeeming his people. All the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.
My recording of this reading

Psalm 117: O Praise the Lord, all you nations. Acclaim him, all you peoples! Strong is his love for us. He is faithful for ever.
May all the nations love and praise you, Lord

John 6.1-15(a): Near the Sea of Galilee, a large crowd followed Jesus, attracted by the way he healed so many sick people. Jesus climbed a hillside and sat there with his disciples. Seeing the huge crowd, Jesus said to one of his disciples  "How can we feed so many people?" The disciple Andrew said "There's a young boy here with 5 loaves and 2 fish. But what good is that for such a huge crowd?"
Recording

John 6.1-15 (b): Jesus said "Make the people sit down". The crowd of about 20,000 sat down on the grass. Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and gave them out to all the people. He did the same with the fish. Everyone ate as much as they wanted to. The people, seeing this miracle, said "He really is God's great prophet". Jesus, aware that they wanted to make him king, slipped away and went up the hill by himself
Jesus, please bless my prayers and actions to help others, just as you blessed the loaves and fish

Yesterday morning I visited Lai King prison for young women. Then in the afternoon I visited a very sick elderly male prisoner from South America who is in hospital. Like many others - especially his family in South America whom I met in January - I am praying for a miracle, but at this stage the man has one leg in Heaven ... the other leg being chained to his bed!

Pope Francis - The Joy of the Gospel No. 48:
But to whom should the Church go first? When we read the Gospel we find a clear indication: not so much our friends and wealthy neighbours, but above all the poor and the sick, those who are usually despised and overlooked.
There can be no room for doubt or for explanations which weaken so clear a message.

Joshua 1: God said to Joshua: "I will be with you, as I was with Moses. I will not leave you or abandon you. Be strong and stand firm and be careful to keep all the Law which my servant Moses laid on you. Never swerve from this to right or left, and then you will be happy in all you do. Have the book of this Law always on your lips. Meditate on it day and night, so that you may carefully keep everything that is written in it. Be fearless, be confident, for wherever you go I the Lord your God am with you." Then Joshua said to the people: "Get ready, for in 3 days you will cross the Jordan River and take possession of the land
which God is giving to you."

Some people tried to stop them from calling out, but they shouted even more loudly "Son of David, have pity on us." Jesus stopped and said to them "What do you want me to do for you?" They replied "Lord, let us see again". Jesus felt sorry for them. He touched their eyes and straight away their sight returned.

Wed Nov 28

After a visit yesterday afternoon to Puk Uk prison for young men (18-21 year olds) I came away with the same feeling as after my last visit: there must be a better way to deal with young offenders. Putting them all together with very little to do for long months, even years, before they are sentenced, means they spend most of their time in a dayroom at tables, learning from each other more about the life of crime - especially about life in triad societies (most of them have membership). They just infect each other with drug tales etc.  Wouldn't they be better off in specially trained foster families with emphasis on education/training etc. In the Book of Genesis, before Eve came on the scene, God says "It's not good for man to be alone". In the case of the young offenders, I feel "It's not good for them to be together"!

HK readers are most welcome to join me and other Oblates and Oblates friends and helpers on Thursday Dec 6 for the annual O.M.I. feast day Mass at 7.30pm at Notre Dame College, 51 Shing Tak Street, Ma Tau Wei, Kowloon (with supper after Mass).

Pope Francis - The Joy of the Gospel No. 47:
Frequently, we act as arbiters of grace rather than its facilitators. But the Church is not a tollhouse; it is the house of the Father, where there is a place for everyone, with all their problems.

Deuteronomy 33-34:  Before Moses died, he blessed the twelve tribes of Israel. Moses then went up Mount Nebo, opposite Jericho, where the Lord showed him the whole land that the Israelites would possess. Moses was buried in the land of Moab.
After the people mourned Moses for 30 days, Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom, since Moses had laid his hands on him. From that time there has never been a prophet like Moses, the man who knew the Lord face to face.

Dear God, thank you for the life of Moses. May civic and church leaders be more like him, filled with love for you and for the people

My recording of this reading

Psalm 99: The Lord is king. He is great in Sion. His power is seen throughout the world. Among his priests were Aaron, Moses and Samuel. They prayed to the Lord and he answered their call. Let peoples everywhere praise his name. He is holy, full of power.
Lord, may all peoples know and love you

Matthew 20.20-28: The brothers James and John were two of Jesus' disciples. One day their mother said to Jesus "When you become king, allow my sons to sit at your right and left". Jesus said to James and John "Only my Father in heaven can allocate seats on my right and left". The 10 other disciples were angry at James and John for seeking honor. So Jesus said to them all
"In most places, people in power like to dominate and control others. But this is not to be your way of exercising authority. You must exercise authority by serving others, not dominating them, just as I came not to be served, but to serve, and to give my life as a ransom for the world".

Jesus, please help me want to help and serve other people, not dominate and control them

Reflection on the above readings: The mother of James and John was a sister of Jesus' mother Mary. Like so many mothers she wanted the very best for her children.

Gay marriage: an elephant in the room (by John W)

Frightening YouTube reports: LGBT radical impact on educational institutions (No. 5); LGBT infiltrating churches (No. 6); US corporations massively supporting LGBT agenda (No. 7). What has happened in the US is now starting to happen in other places. Some day our children will ask "why didn't you do more to stop this evil?"
