R-R-P  Reading - Reflection - Prayer   Dec 13, 2012

Reading:  First Maccabees 15

In 138 B.C., Antiochus son of Demetrius made war with Trypho.
This same Antiochus became hostile to Simon  after the Romans
renewed their treaty with Israel.

When Antiochus sent an army to attack Israel,
Simon defeated that army.

A disloyal and ambitious Jew named Ptolemy got Simon and two of his sons drunk at a banquet and killed them.

Simon was succeeded by his son John as leader of the Jews.

Reflection:
Disloyalty and ambition often go together

Prayer:  Dear God,  please protect leaders from disloyalty

Reading:  Psalm 92

It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
to make music to your name, O Most High,

to proclaim your love in the morning,
and your truth right through the night.

Your deeds, O Lord, have made me glad.
For the work of your hands, I shout with joy.

To me you give the wild ox's strength.
You anoint me with the purest oil.

May we love and praise you right through our lives,
right till the end of our days.

May we keep on proclaiming your goodness,
proclaiming that in you, our rock, there is only goodness.

Reflection:
How readily and rightly we praise people who have done something special, like winning an Olympic medal.
How readily and rightly we should praise our Creator who made the universe and gave us life

Prayer: Lord, it is right and fitting to love and praise you

Reading:  1 John

God is light. There is no darkness in him.
If we say we are in union with God
while we are living in darkness,
we are lying, because we are not living the truth

If we say we have no sin in us,
we are deceiving ourselves
and refusing to admit the truth

But if we acknowledge our sins,
God will forgive us
and purify us from everything that is wrong

Reflection:
When the lights suddenly go out - we are afraid.
When the lights come back on on - we are not afraid.

The darkness of lying causes fear.
The light of truth takes away fear

Prayer: Jesus, forgive my sins. Please help me live in your truth and light

Reading:  John 10

Jesus said to the religious leaders "I am the Good Shepherd.
The Good Shepherd is one who lays down his life for his sheep

A hired man, since he has no real concern for the sheep,
abandons them and runs away if he sees a wolf coming

I am the Good Shepherd.
I know my own sheep, and my own sheep know me"

Reflection:
Almost every day the news has a story about a bad leader, in the government or in the Church.
Leaders face temptations of corruption, abuse of power, injustice etc.
No wonder St Peter and St Paul both tell us to pray often for leaders

Prayer:  Jesus, Good Shepherd, please help civic and church leaders to avoid corruption of every kind
