R-R-P  Reading - Reflection - Prayer   Dec 14, 2012
With readers' comments, below

Reading:  Job 1

Job lived in Southern Israel. He had 7 sons and 3 daughters.
He owned thousands of animals.  He loved God and was a good man.

Satan, one of the fallen angels, challenged God to let Job be put to the test. God gave permission to Satan to test Job.

On the same day, all Job's animals were captured by raiders, and all his children died in a storm.

Job tore his clothes, shaved his head, bowed to the ground and prayed:
"Naked I came from my mother's womb,
naked I shall return to the womb of the earth.
The Lord gave, the Lord has taken back.
Blessed be the name of the Lord."

Reflection:
When my school for school-less poor children in Zhaoqing was closed down by the authorities in 2008,
I remember using Job's words: "The Lord gave, the Lord has taken back. Blessed be the name of the Lord"

Prayer:  Dear God, please give us courage and faith when life is difficult

Reading:  Psalm 93

The Lord is king, with majesty enrobed,
he has girded himself with power.

The world you made firm, not to be moved.
From all eternity, O Lord, you are.

The oceans and coastlines of the world
are majestic and powerful.

But greater than the roar of mighty waters,
more glorious than the surging of the sea
is the Lord on high.

Such a Lord, such a Creator, such a God.
Truly your decrees are to be trusted.

Holiness is fitting to your house
O Lord, always and everywhere.

Reflection:
When walking along a surf beach, with big waves crashing to the shore,
the above words are a beautiful prayer:
"Greater than the roar of mighty waters, more glorious than the surging of the sea, is the Lord on high

Prayer: We praise you, Lord, our Creator, who made the waves of the sea

Reading:  1 John 2

We can be sure we know God
only by keeping his commandments

Anyone who says "I know him"
and does not keep his commandments,
is a liar, refusing to admit the truth

We can be sure we are in God
only if we are living the same kind of life as Christ lived

Reflection:
Knowing and loving God is not just something in our heads.
It's something in our behaviour

Prayer: Jesus, please help me live like you, live for you

Reading:  John 10

When Jesus was walking in the Temple, some religious leaders said to him
"If you are the Christ, tell us plainly"

Jesus replied "I have told you, but you do not believe me.
The miracles I do in my Father's name also witness to who I am.
The Father and I are one"

The leaders picked up stones to stone Jesus and said
"We will  stone you for blasphemy. You are only a man and you claim to be God"

Jesus replied "If I am not doing my Father's work, then do not believe me.
But if am doing my Father's work,  you must know that the Father and I are one.
He is in me and I am in him"

Reflection:
Some people who misinterpret the Bible (like the Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormons)
say that Jesus never claimed to be God.
There were no JWs and Mormons among the religious leaders of Jesus' time.
They understood only too well that Jesus claimed to be God....hence the stones

Prayer:  Jesus, please help more people believe that you are the Son of God
