Readings for Feast of St John the Apostle

The first reading:   Explanation of who the Baby in the manger is

Responsorial Psalm:  Rejoice in the Lord!

Gospel:  The moment when John the apostle "believed"

Reflection:
John's description of Jesus as "The Word who became flesh"
reminds us that the manger Baby is God the Son, The Word

Prayer: Jesus, God the Son become man, we adore and love you Lord.
Please increase our understanding of who you are....and help us love you more

Lord Jesus Christ, please help us to see you more clearly, love you more dearly, follow you more nearly, day by day.

As I read today's Gospel, I felt a joy that "Yes, Jesus is here" , Christmas is a time when our Saviour's birth is "replayed" for all, especially for all Christians who go to Mass probably only once a year, as a reminder that our Lord was here to save us. I felt that once again, I like Jesus am "reborn". In the new year, I will work towards getting closer to Jesus and understanding more of the Word and practising it.

In the UK over Christmas our Bishops have been using their homilies to preach against same-sex marriage which our government wishes to legalise. Once again the Church is sidelining a small proportion of the population and treating them as lesser people, people not worthy of benefitting from any blessing from the Church, people who are also made by God and feel his love between each other. Surely the threat against marriage is the attitude of some of those wanting to marry in Church, but who hold a caveat that if it doesnt work out they can always divorce, and if and when there are problems they can walk away. Surely the Church should be devoting their energies to supporting and helping and guiding their members through their marital problems and not, once again, demonising those who love another of the same sex. Homosexuals are not disordered, not that way because of choice, but real daughters and sons of a loving God.
