R-R-P  Reading - Reflection - Prayer   Jan 2, 2013
With readers' comments, below

Reading:  Job 3-7

Chapters 3 - 7

Job broke the 7 day silence by wishing that he had never been born.
He added "For me, there is no peace, no sleep.
My suffering doesn't let me rest."

Eliphaz then spoke and reminded Job that God corrects those whom he loves.

Job replied that he was innocent of any wrongdoing, so why was he being punished?
He added: "Lying in bed I wonder 'When will it be day?'
During the day I think 'How slowly night comes.'
Neither day or night offers me any relief from my suffering."

Reflection:
Many people who have been bed-ridden in hospital or a nursing centre for years/decades
share Job's thoughts about night and day

Prayer:  Dear God,  please give courage and peace
to people who are suffering great pain or distress

Reading:  Psalm 95

Come ring out our joy to the Lord.
Hail the rock who saves us.

Let us come before him giving thanks.
With songs let us praise the Lord.

A mighty God is the Lord,
a great king above all gods.

In his hand are the depths of the earth.
The heights of the mountains are his.

To him belongs the sea, for he made it,
and the dry land shaped by his hands.

Come in, let us bow and bend low.
Let us kneel before the God who made us.

For he is our God
and we are the people who belong to his pasture.

Reflection:
To God belong the sea and the mountains. We ourselves come from God.
Loving God is like loving our parents

Prayer: Lord, you are our Creator. Our life comes from you.
We praise and love you, Lord

Reading:  1 John 3

Think of the love that the Father has lavished on us
by letting us be called God's children

And God's love has even more in store for us in the future:
we shall be like him because we shall see him as he really is

This is why we must try to live good lives.
We must try to be as good as Christ

Reflection:
"Seeing is believing" ...and we can add "seeing is becoming" (becoming like God)
...and even in this life, the more we "see" Jesus in the Bible, the more we will become like him

Prayer: Jesus, please help me be more like you

Reading:  John 11

The religious leaders had a meeting to decide what to do about Jesus.
They said "If this man keeps on doing miracles, everyone will follow him. Then the Romans will see him as a threat, and they will wipe out our nation"

The main  leader said "It is better for one man to die for the people, than for the whole nation to be destroyed"

These words had more meaning than the leader realized, since Jesus was to die not just for the nation, but for the whole world

Since the leaders wanted to kill him, Jesus went to a remote area near the desert, and stayed there with his disciples

Jesus, please help me better understand how your death saved the world
