R-R-P  Reading - Reflection - Prayer   Jan 9, 2013
With readers' comments, below

Reading:  Job 22-24

Eliphaz then said that God was punishing Job
because justice demanded that Job be punished for his sins.

Job replied:
"I know that God sees everyone and everything.
God sees every step I take.
But I cannot contact him.

He has filled my life with sadness and fear
and yet he doesn't answer my prayer."

Reflection:
After Mother Teresa died, a book about her described how a large part of her life was full of desolation, with a feeling that God was far away from her. At her beatification, Pope John Paul II said
In the darkest hours she would cling with greater tenacity to prayer before the Most Blessed Sacrament.  Like the Psalmist, how many times, in moments of interior desolation, Mother Teresa also repeated to her Lord: "In you, in you I hope, my God!"

Prayer: Dear God, in times of darkness,  with Jesus we pray
"My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?"

Reading:  Psalm 100

Cry out with joy to the Lord, all the earth.
Serve the Lord with gladness.
Come before him, singing for joy.

Know that he, the Lord, is God. He made us, we belong to him.
We are his people, the sheep of his flock.

Go within his gates, giving thanks.
Enter his temple with songs of praise.
Give thanks to him and bless his name.

Indeed, how good is the Lord,
eternal his merciful love.
He is faithful from age to age.

Reflection:
A stirring rendition of this psalm is The Old 100th
 - as in this famous video of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth

Prayer:  Dear Lord, please help us to serve you with gladness,
even in - especially in - times of difficulty

Reading:  Jude

From Jude, servant of Jesus Christ and brother of James,
to those who are dear to God the Father and kept safe,
wishing you mercy and peace and love

I write with urgency to appeal to you:
stand up for the faith that has been entrusted to us

Some false teachers have infiltrated our ranks.
They reject the teaching of our Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.
They say "anything goes" in the area of morality.

Such teaching, such people, must be opposed.
Be kind to such people, but with great caution

To God who saves us through Jesus Christ our Lord,
be glory and all honor, now and forever

Reflection:
This passage teaches us how to approach such sensitive topics as same-sex marriage:
with kindness and caution and without compromising the message of the Bible

Prayer:  Jesus, please protect your church from false teachings

Reading:  John 13

Jesus became visibly upset and said to his disciples at the meal
"One of you is going to betray me. It is the one to whom I give a piece of bread
that I have dipped in the dish"

He dipped the piece of bread and gave it to Judas Iscariot. Immediately, Satan entered Judas

Jesus said to Judas "What you are going to do, do quickly".
Judas left the meal. Night had fallen

Reflection:
Passover for the Jews was the happiest time of the year. But for Jesus, it was a time when his heart was breaking at the thought of torture and death the next day. How can you be happy when you know you're going to die tomorrow?  Yet Jesus, like Mother Teresa, "kept going" through this time of "darkness"

Prayer: Jesus, please help us "keep going" when life gets difficult
