O Holy Spirit, please guide me as I read these passages for today.                     
May these passages give me hope, strength, wisdom, compassion, courage and peace for my daily life             Chinese text

Reading:  Proverbs 2

For God himself is the giver of wisdom.
From his mouth come knowledge and discernment.

When wisdom comes into your heart,
then prudence and discernment will protect you from evil.

Reflection:
Wisdom cannot be bought at a supermarket.
It cannot be downloaded from the internet.
Only God can give us wisdom.
Each day we must humbly ask God for wisdom,
as in the old prayer:

God our Father, you teach our hearts by the light of the Holy Spirit.
Grant that by the gift of the same Spirit
we may be truly wise 
and ever rejoice in his consolation.
We make our prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen

Give thanks to the Lord, 
make known his deeds among all the peoples.

O sing to him, sing his praise.
Tell all his wonderful works.

Be proud of his holy name.
Let hearts that seek the Lord rejoice.

Consider the Lord and his strength.
Constantly seek his face.

Never forget how the Lord has helped us in the past,
how he has protected Israel from its beginning till now.

Reflection: 
One thing that helped the Jewish people to face the present and the future,
was to remember the past. Especially when they were in big trouble, they would remember the goodness of God in their history.
Not that they "lived in the past".
But with grateful hearts they daily meditated on God's goodness to them in the past,
and this calmed their hearts, and gave courage to their hearts
to face the fears and problems of the present and the future

Prayer:  Dear God, please help me better understand how you have been loving and protecting me since the beginning of my life

He gave me this message for the church in Pergamum:

"I know you live in a place where idol worship is strong.
I know you have stayed faithful, even after one of you was killed

But some of you have compromised yourselves by eating food sacrificed to idols. 
And some of you have followed false teachers

Listen to this message and repent"

Reflection:
Compromise can be a good thing, as a way of reaching agreements and settling disagreements.
But compromising our principles is a different matter.
e.g. A politician privately opposes abortion, but publicly votes for abortion when legislation is being prepared....in order to please the vocal pro-abortion lobby in his district. He has compromised his principles

Prayer: Jesus, please help us never to compromise our Christian faith

At the meal, Jesus said to his disciples
"As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you. 
Remain in my love by keeping my commandments, especially this commandment:
love one another, as I have loved you

A man can have no greater love than to lay down his life for his friends"

Reflection: 
Rather than compromise our principles (c.f. reflection for Rev 2, above)
we should compromise our comfort, our interests, our plans, our time
for the sake of others. Like a mother cancelling her plan  to join friends for a restaurant meal .... in order to stay home with a sick child. This is sacrificial love as taught by Jesus: sacrificing, giving up our own plans/comfort/time for the sake of others

Prayer: Jesus, thank you for loving us. Help us to love one another as you have loved us
