 Reading - Reflection - Prayer   Jan 22, 2013
With readers' comments, below

Reading:  Proverbs 10

A wise child is a father's joy.
A foolish child is a mother's sorrow.

Laziness leads to poverty.
Diligence leads to success.

Hatred provokes disputes.
Love covers over all offences.

A flood of words is never without fault.
Prudent people control their lips.

Reflection:
One person who put the above words into practice: Matteo Ricci, the Italian Jesuit pioneer who worked in China for some 27 years. As a child and youth he loved study and learning. Throughout his life he was hardworking, never lazy. He was a peaceful person of dialogue who hated to be drawn into arguments. He lovingly overlooked other people's faults. Especially in the latter years of his life, he was a man of few words ....always prudent in his speech

Prayer: Lord, help us put the above words into practice ... like Matteo Ricci!

Reading:  Psalms 112

Happy are people who love and honor the Lord,
who take delight in his commands.
The children of such people will be blessed.

Such people are a light in the darkness for others.
Such people are generous, merciful and just.

They take pity and help those in need.
They conduct their affairs with  integrity.

Open-handed they give to the poor.
Their justice and goodness will never be forgotten.

Reflection:
Again and again the Old Testament repeats the message that a good Jew, a good person, is one who cares about the poor. Not just someone who says lots of prayers and observes special feast days .... that is good, but it should go hand in hand with concern for the poor...otherwise it's not the real goodness

Prayer:  Lord, please help me do more for the poor

Reading:  Revelation 5

I heard the sound of an immense number of angels gathered around God's throne.
There were 10,000 times 10,000 of them, shouting:

"The Lamb that was sacrificed is worthy to be given power, riches, wisdom, strength, honor, glory and blessing"

I heard all living things in creation - angels, people, animals - crying out:
"To the One sitting on the throne and to the Lamb, be all praise, honor, glory and power for ever and ever"

Reflection:
Please enjoy this beautiful YouTube song which uses the above words

Prayer: "Thou are worthy, Thou art worthy, Thou are worthy O Lord,
to receive glory, glory and honor, glory and honor and power"!

Reading:  John 18

The religious leaders took Jesus to the Roman governor, Pilate.
Pilate asked Jesus "Are you the King of the Jews?"

Jesus replied "My kingdom is not a kingdom of this world.
But I am a king. I came into this world to bear witness to the truth"

After further questioning, Pilate said to the leaders
"I find no case against him, so how about I release him according to the custom of releasing one prisoner at Passover?

At this the leaders shouted "Not this man, but Barabbas".
Barabbas was a bandit

Reflection:
At the very start of his life Jesus is called "the King of the Jews", by the Wise Men who visited him as a baby. But only now, in a situation of helplessness, does Jesus acknowledge his kingship, not a political kingship to overthrow the Romans, but a spiritual kingship to establish justice and truth and peace....and overthrow Satan

Prayer: Jesus, help me be a better witness to the values of your kingdom
