 Reading - Reflection - Prayer   Jan 24, 2013
With readers' comments, below

Reading:  Proverbs 13-14

Guard your talk and you will protect your life.
People who talk too much, easily get into trouble.

Choose wise people as your friends and you will be happy.
Choose foolish people as  friends and your problems will multiply.

The heart knows its own grief best.
No human person can fully understand another person's heart.

A peaceful heart is necessary for good health.
Envy is like a cancer in the bones.

Injustice to the poor is an insult to our Creator.
Kindness to the poor gives honor to our Creator.

Virtue makes a nation great.
Sin causes empires to fall.

Reflection:
Once again, every line full of good advice, full of wisdom.
Good to stop and think about each line.
Once again, this is the sort of learning students should study at school

Prayer: Dear God, please help everyone in our country to be wise and kind and just

Reading:  Psalms 114-115

When Israel came out of Egypt,
Jacob's descendents from an alien people,

Judah became the Lord's temple,
Israel became his kingdom.

Descendents of Israel, trust in the Lord.
He is our help and our shield.

To you may the Lord grant increase,
to you and all your children.

May you be blessed by the Lord,
the maker of heaven and earth.

Reflection:
The writers of the psalms often combined two themes (as in this psalm):
God's goodness to Israel  + make sure future generations know about that goodness

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for all your goodness. Please help us pass on to future generations the knowledge of your goodness

Reading:  Revelation 8-11

I saw how punishment was coming for all evil doers on the earth

I heard voices shouting:
"The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and his Christ.
He will reign for ever and ever"

The 24 elders worshipped God saying:

"We give thanks to you, Almighty Lord God.
The time has come for everyone to be judged.
The time has come for good people to be rewarded
and bad people to be punished"

Reflection:
At the end of our lives, if not before, we have to pay the bill for any bad things we have done.
Good news: "Charity covers a multitude of sins" = kindness to others, especially the poor, is the best way to pay our "bad bills", along with forgiveness of others

Prayer: Jesus, please help bad people stop being bad, and help us make up for any badness in our past

Reading:  John 19

Pilate now put Jesus on display and again told the leaders
"I find no case against him"

The leaders replied "According to our Law he must die,
since he claims to be the Son of God.
If you free him, you are no friend of the Roman Emperor"

Eventually Pilate gave in to them and handed Jesus over to be crucified

Reflection:
Pilate condemned an innocent man in order not to lose his job.
2000 years later, in many countries, innocent people are denied justice by corrupt judges

Prayer: Jesus, please help all judges to stand up for the truth and not make false judgments
