 Reading - Reflection - Prayer   Jan 28, 2013
With readers' comments, below

Reading:  Proverbs 15

A mild answer diffuses a tense situation.
A sharp answer stirs up anger.

A kind tongue is a source of life.
A harsh tongue hurts other people's feelings.

A happy heart produces a cheerful face.
A sad heart means a drooping spirit.

Hot-headed people provoke disputes.
Peaceful people prevent disputes.

Without deliberation, plans come to nothing.
Successful plans need many counselors.

A kindly glance gives joy to the heart.
Good news gives strength to the bones.

Reflection:
No wonder the letter of James calls the tongue "the troublesome member".

Prayer: Dear Lord, please give me a kind tongue

Reading:  Psalm 116

I love the Lord for he has heard the cry of my appeal.
He turned his ear to me in the day when I called him.

They surrounded me, sorrow, distress and the snares of death.
I was helpless, so the Lord saved me.

Calm down my soul, for the Lord has been good.
I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living.

How can I repay the Lord for his goodness to me?
The cup of salvation I will raise to thank the Lord.

O precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful.
Lord, you have loosened my bonds. I am your servant.

Reflection:
As we grow older, we become more aware of the sacrifices our parents made for us when we were young. As we grow older, we become more aware of God's goodness right through our lives....starting with the gift of existence

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for all your goodness to me

Reading:  Revelation 12

A great sign appeared in heaven:
a Woman, dressed in the sun, standing on the moon,
crowned with 12 stars

She was giving birth to a Child,
and she cried out in the pain of childbirth

Then a second sign appeared:
a huge red dragon, which wanted to eat the Child

The Woman gave birth to a Son, the ruler of all nations

The Son was taken straight up to heaven, to God on his throne.
The Woman escaped to safety in the desert,
to a place prepared for her by God

Reflection:
Catholics usually apply this reading to Mary, the mother of Jesus.
Mary is the "New Eve" or "Second Eve", at war with Satan since the first pages of the Bible.
May Mary's prayers help us stay close to her son Jesus, the "Second Adam",  the Strong One who defeats Satan

Prayer: Jesus, protect us from Satan
who goes round like a hungry lion wanting to eat us

Reading:  John 19

Carrying his own crossbeam, Jesus went out of the city to the place called Golgotha, where they crucified him with two other men, one on each side of him

Pilate had the charge against Jesus written out and attached to the top of the cross. It read "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews"

When the soldiers had finished crucifying Jesus, they divided his clothes among them

Reflection:
We are familiar of pictures of Jesus carrying a cross. But 1 Peter says he was nailed to a tree.
Which means Jesus carried a crossbeam (the horizontal beam, which would be nailed to a tree), not a whole cross. Jesus' feet were nailed to the tree, but his hands were nailed to the crossbeam which was nailed to a tree.  Tree + crossbeam = Cross

Prayer: Jesus nailed to the Cross, thank you for suffering for the salvation of the world
