 Reading - Reflection - Prayer   Feb 21, 2013
With readers' comments, below

Reading:  The Song of Songs 5

The bride:
I sleep, but my heart is awake.
I hear my beloved knocking.

I open my door, but he is gone.
I search for him, but cannot find him.

Reflection:
One of history's most famous searches for God was that of St Augustine
who used these memorable
search words:

Prayer: Lord, please help all searchers to find you

Reading: Psalm 137

By the rivers of Babylon we sat and cried, remembering Zion.
On the poplars that grew there we hung up our harps.

For it was there that they asked us, our captors, for songs.
"Sing to us", they said, "one of Zion's songs".

O how could we sing the song of the Lord on alien soil?
If I forget you, Jerusalem, let my right hand wither.

O let my tongue cleave to my mouth
if I remember you not, Jerusalem , above all my joys.

Reflection:
Time to listen to this great song again! By the Rivers of Babylon (YouTube, with lyrics)

Prayer: Lord, please help  people who have been exiled from their homeland

Reading:  Acts 1

About ten days after Jesus' ascension to heaven was the Feast of Pentecost.
Jesus' 12 apostles, his mother, several other women, and his brothers were together in one room

Suddenly they heard what sounded like a powerful wind.
Tongues of fire appeared and came to rest on the head of each of them

They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak foreign languages

Reflection:
Let's keep praying each day for the coming conclave.
May it experience a powerful wind...and tongues of fire!

Prayer:  Come Holy Spirit! Fall afresh on our world! Fall afresh on the conclave cardinals!

Reading:  Matthew 6

Jesus said to the crowds
that life is about more than food and clothing.

Pointing to some birds flying around, Jesus said:

Look at the birds. They don't sow or reap,
yet your heavenly Father feeds them.
And you are more precious than the birds.

Pointing to flowers in the field Jesus said:
How beautiful are the flowers.
They are more beautiful than King Solomon's clothing.

If God cares so much about the life of flowers
won't he care even more about human life?

So, don't spend your day worrying about
what you are going to eat and drink and wear.

Put God first in your life, God and a right way of life,
then  God will look after your physical needs.

Don't waste your energy worrying about tomorrow.
Live life one day at a time.

Reflection:
And another beautiful song: One Day at a Time   ("nigh" should be "mine")

Prayer: Jesus, please help me live "one day at a time"!
