 Reading - Reflection - Prayer   Feb 28, 2013
With readers' comments, below

Reading:  Wisdom 8-9

From my youth I sought and loved Wisdom.
Wisdom teaches us temperance, prudence, justice and fortitude.

I prayed for Wisdom like this:

"God of our ancestors and Lord of mercy,
in Wisdom you made all things.

Grant me Wisdom who was with you when you made the world.
May she teach me what is right,
so that I may be a good ruler.

Reflection:
May all leaders say a prayer like this each morning!

Prayer: Lord, please give me Wisdom, as you gave Wisdom to King Solomon

Psalm 146

My soul, give praise to the Lord.
I will praise the Lord all my days.

Put no trust in princes,
in mortal men in whom there is no help.

Take their breath, they return to clay
and their plans that day come to nothing.

They are happy who are helped by Jacob's God,
whose hope is in the Lord our God,

who alone made heaven and earth,
the seas and all they contain.

It is he who gives bread to the hungry,
the Lord, who sets prisoners free.

It is the Lord who gives sight to the blind,
who raises up those who are bowed down.

It is the Lord who protects the stranger
and upholds the widow and orphan.

It is the Lord who loves the just
but thwarts the path of the wicked.

The Lord will reign for ever,
Zion's God, from age to age.

Reflection:
"Put no trust in princes"....makes me think of the conclave, with all its politics.
For the urgent reform of the Church we turn to the One who made heaven and earth.
Let's keep praying:

Prayer: Holy Spirit, may your blessing be on the conclave....to bring about reform in the Church

Reading:  Acts 3

While Peter was talking to the crowd, some religious leaders and soldiers came and arrested Peter and John

The next day the leaders held a meeting and asked the prisoners:
"By what power and by whose name did you heal the crippled beggar?"

Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, replied "The cripple is able to stand up perfectly healthy
because he was healed by Jesus the Nazarene, the one you crucified, whom God raised from the dead

Salvation comes no other way. Only by the name of Jesus can we be saved"

Reflection:
Unless we know that "Jesus" means "God saves", we miss the full impact Peter's words.
The religious leaders would have got the point!

Prayer: Jesus, your name means "God saves",
you are indeed the
Saviour of the world

Reading:  Matthew 9

Some people carried  a paralyzed man through a crowd to Jesus.
The man was on a bed.

Jesus knew that these people believed he could help them,
so he said to the paralyzed man "Courage, your sins are forgiven".

Religious leaders in the crowd were thinking to themselves
that Jesus was wrong to say he could forgive sins.

So Jesus said to the leaders: Which is easier:
to say 'Your sins are forgiven', or to say 'Get up and walk'?

Then to prove that he had authority to forgive sins,
he said to the paralyzed man
"Get up, pick up your bed and go home".

The man got up and went home.
The crowd praised God for what they had seen.

Reflection:
I know many bed-ridden paralysed people. The suffering of some of them is so acute I find myself praying
"Please Lord, soon...very soon, either heal them or take them home to Heaven. One way or the other, please put an end to their terrible suffering"

Prayer: Jesus, please give your peace and healing to the paralysed people we know
