 Reading - Reflection - Prayer   March 21, 2013
With readers' comments, below

Reading:  Sirach 42-43

What an amazing world we live in!
The Creator sure did a good job programming everything!

Great is the Lord who made the sun, the moon and stars.
What a beautiful creature is the rainbow!

The seasons, the rain, the snow, lightning and thunder:
all proclaim the glory of God.

How great is God who has made such an amazing universe.
How can we praise and honor him enough?

Reflection:
There "just happens" to be food for us to eat.
Our mouth "just happens" to have teeth to help us chew food.
Our digestive system "just happens" to give us energy.
The list of "just happen's" is so long that "just happens" doesn't make sense.
Nothing "just happens"...it's all programmed by a loving Creator, allowing us to adjust his program for better or worse

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for creating the world. Please help us be amazed more often by our amazing world

Psalms 20-21

May the Lord protect and help you,
may he give you your heart's desire
and fulfil every one of your plans.

Some trust in chariots or horses,
but we trust in the Lord.

Reflection:
This is a lovely prayer to pray on behalf of Pope Francis!

Prayer: Lord, please protect and help Pope Francis.  Please bless all his plans

Reading:  Acts 10

Cornelius was a Roman centurion stationed in the town of Caesarea.
He and his household prayed, loved God, and helped the local people

One morning Cornelius had a vision that Peter would visit him.
In another town, Peter was instructed by the Lord to visit Cornelius

Peter preached God's message to Cornelius and his household.
While Peter was speaking, the Holy Spirit came down on all the listeners

Jewish believers  who had accompanied Peter were astonished
that the Holy Spirit would come down on non-Jewish people

Reflection:
This story reminds of Moses' words: "Would that God's spirit came down on every person".
Moses realised that God's blessing is not just for a few, but for all

Prayer:
Holy Spirit, please come down on all peoples everywhere!

Reading:  Matthew 14

Not long after Jesus began traveling and teaching,
King Herod arrested John the Baptist and put him in prison.

This was because John had told Herod he was breaking the Law
by living with Herodias,  his brother's wife.

During a birthday party for Herod,
the daughter of Herodias danced.

Her dancing so pleased Herod
that he said he would give her anything she wanted.

Herodias told her to ask for the head of John the Baptist on a dish.
Herod then had John beheaded.

John's disciples came and buried the body.

Reflection:
In today's world, in many countries, people are at the mercy of bad rulers like Herod
.
Let's pray often for good leaders. My own custom is to make this prayer as I go to sleep in bed each night!

Prayer: Jesus, please give the world good leaders,  and protect people from bad leaders like Herod
