 Reading - Reflection - Prayer   April 19, 2013
With readers' comments, below

Reading:  Isaiah 20

Trust in the Lord, not in military might.
Israel is going the wrong way in forgetting God's protection.

It has no thought for its Maker,
no eyes for him who shaped everything long ago.

The reason why the earth is without rain and crops
is that people have forgotten their Creator.

Reflection:
When we forget God, we start to put our trust in .....military might....in wealth....in our own strength and talents etc

Prayer: Lord, please help us never forget you....and help us trust in your protection above all other things

Psalms 38, 39

O Lord, please forgive my sins and heal me.
Heal my body which is sick because of my sins.

Protect me, Lord, from those who gloat over me
now that I am brought low and unable to help myself.

Lord, you have shown me how short a time I have on earth.
Lord, give me wisdom of heart to live my life better.

Reflection:
Times of serious illness are usually times of serious thinking about the purpose of our lives

Prayer: Lord, help us better understand the meaning of life

Reading:  Acts 16

We went to a number of towns in Macedonia. In Philippi, the Jews had no prayer hall.
They met on the river bank. We went there one Sabbath and preached to the women who were meeting there

One of these women was Lydia. The Lord opened her heart to what Paul was saying.
She and her whole household were baptized

Reflection:
Often when one person, especially a parent, in a family becomes a Christian, other members of the family also will become Christians....as in the family of Lydia

Prayer:
Jesus, may these members of my family (..names..) soon become Christians

Reading:  Matthew 18

Peter asked Jesus "How many times must I forgive someone?
7 times?"  Jesus answered "Not 7, but 77 times.

For the kingdom of heaven is like a king who cancelled the huge debt of one of his servants.

But that same servant refused to cancel the tiny debt of one of his fellow servants.

So the king said to the servant:
'When you appealed to me, I had pity on you and cancelled your big debt.  But you refused to have pity on your fellow servant who asked you for mercy. Therefore you must now go to prison until your big debt is paid.'

If you refuse to forgive other people,
you are making yourself ineligible for God's forgiveness."

Reflection:
Forgiveness makes sense from a health point of view (lack of forgiveness can cause sickness...)
and makes sense from a spiritual point of view ("forgive us as we forgive others")
Please check this: a most beautiful story of forgiveness

Prayer: Jesus, please help me to forgive other people, just as you forgive me....many times each day
