Reading - Reflection - Prayer May 21, 2013 (for feast of St Eugene de Mazenod)
With readers' comments, below

Reading:  Isaiah 52

How beautiful on the mountains
are the feet of one who brings
good news,
who proclaims peace and salvation,
and tells Zion "Your God is king!"

Break into shouts of joy, you ruins of Jerusalem,
for the Lord is redeeming his people.

All the ends of the earth
shall see the salvation of our God.

Reflection:
The best of all news we can ever give anyone:
God exists, God loves, God loves us

Prayer: Lord, may more and more people in more and more countries
hear
the Good News of your love

Reading:  Psalm 96

O sing a new song to the Lord.
Sing to the Lord, all the earth.
O sing to the Lord, bless his name.

Proclaim his help day by day.
Tell among the nations his glory,
and his wonders among all the peoples.

It was the Lord who made the heavens.
Give the Lord, you families of peoples,
give the Lord glory and honor.

Bring an offering and enter his temple.
Worship the Lord in his sacred place.

Let the heavens rejoice and earth be glad.
Let the sea and all within it thunder praise.

Let the land and all it bears rejoice,
all the trees of the forest shout for joy.

Everyone and everything,
give the Lord glory and honor.

Reflection:
Once we know the Good News of God's love, the automatic next step is ...praise and thanks

Prayer:
Lord, you are our Creator. We love and praise you

Reading:  I Corinthians 1

The language of the Cross doesn't make sense for some people. But for us it is God's power to save

While the Jews demand miracles and the Greeks require philosophy,
here we are preaching a crucified Christ: to the Jews an obstacle they cannot get over, to the pagans madness

During my stay with you, I relied not on philosophy or my own efforts, but only on the power of the Spirit

The wisdom we teach is about things no eye has seen, and no ear has heard.
Things beyond human understanding - all that God has prepared for those who love him

Reflection:
Mazenod instructed his Oblates to avoid fancy rhetoric....and use simple ideas that people could take home and repeat to their family members

Prayer:
Jesus, please help preachers use simple language!

Reading:  Luke 4

Jesus, with the power of the Spirit in him, returned to Galilee.
He taught in local prayer halls. His reputation spread

He came to his home town of Nazareth and went to the prayer hall
on the Sabbath day as he usually did

He stood up and read these words from the prophet Isaiah:
"The spirit of the Lord has been given to me. He has sent me
to bring good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to prisoners,
to give sight to the blind, to set the downtrodden free"

Jesus then sat down and said to the people in the prayer hall "These words from Isaiah are being fulfilled today even as you listen"

Reflection:
Mazenod had a special concern for the poor. Once in his early years, when the Oblates teamed up with another congregation to give a mission in a city, the two groups divided the city in halves. The Oblates chose the poor half

Prayer: Jesus, please help the Church follow Pope Francis' vision - de Mazenod's' vision - of showing special concern for the poor
