 Reading - Reflection - Prayer   May 29, 2013
With readers' comments, below

Reading:  Jeremiah 8-11

Jeremiah said sorrowfully:

My people have forgotten God.
My people ignore God.
My people follow false gods.
My people have no time for the real God.

Lord, you know how weak we are.
Correct us gently, Lord.

Reflection:
Time for Facebook, time for TV, time for movies, time for newspapers/magazines/novels ....but no time for Bible/prayer.
A 70 or 80 year life ...but never got round to reading the Bible.

Prayer: Lord, please help us give more time to more important things (...family/prayer/helping others...) and less time to less important things

Reading:   Psalm 87

On the holy mountain is Jerusalem, the Lord's cherished city.
Of you are told glorious things, O city of God.

All nations are called to serve and love the Lord.
And Jerusalem shall be called their spiritual mother,
for all shall be her children.
In Jerusalem everyone will be welcome and find a home.

Reflection:
Jerusalem is a home to Jews, Christians and Muslims - the three great traditions descended from Abraham.
But throughout history there has been conflict/persecution/ among the three "cousins".
Sometimes peace breaks out, as in Spain when Muslims and Jews lived peacefully for a long period. As in the southern Philippine where Christians and Muslims lived peacefully for decades (until extremists from the Middle East arrived).
Jerusalem is the most sacred city in the world. What a goldmine Jerusalem could be for tourism if only there was more peace. Maybe someday there can be a Middle East Union, like the European Union, with its capital Jerusalem "the city of peace", and its Jewish, Muslim and Christian members living in harmony. An economic as well as a spiritual capital...promoting policies of justice and peace and compassion in the Middle East and throughout the world. A great book on this theme:
Joshua in the Holy Land (see the comment by Norma McAfee:
this book "exemplifies ways that we could all work together for peace")

Prayer: Jesus, may Jerusalem be a place of peace and prayer for all peoples

Reading:  Acts 23

The next day about 40 Jews held a meeting. They decided not to eat or drink until they had killed Paul.
They asked the religious leaders to arrange another meeting so that they could attack Paul

But the son of Paul's sister heard of the plot. He got into the barracks and told Paul.
Paul got the boy to tell the captain. The captain immediately arranged for a large group of soldiers to take Paul to Caesarea to be tried by Felix the governor

Felix said "I will wait till your accusers come here too, then I will hear your case"

Reflection:
As far as I know, the above words are the only NT reference to Paul's family ...a sister ...a nephew.
I wonder if they had become Christians?  They certainly loved and cared for Paul ....and showed great initiative and courage in helping Paul.

Prayer:
Jesus, please help people who are trying to help family members in danger or trouble

Reading: Matthew 27

As Jesus was taken to the place of crucifixion,
a man name Simon, from Cyrene,
was made to carry Jesus' cross.

Jesus was then nailed to the cross and hung on the cross.
Two robbers were crucified with him,
one on his right and one on his left.

Above Jesus' head was a sign with the charge against him:
"This is Jesus, the King of the Jews".

People passing by that place made fun of Jesus.
So did the religious leaders. They mocked and taunted him.

Reflection:
Was Jesus' cross just a crossbeam, or a whole cross?
This article says it was a whole cross

Prayer: Jesus on the Cross, thank you for suffering so much for the salvation of the world
