 Reading - Reflection - Prayer   June 1, 2013
With readers' comments, below

Reading:  Jeremiah 15

Alas, my mother, for you gave me birth
to be a man of strife and dissension for everyone.

I neither lend nor borrow,
yet everyone curses me.
Lord, remember how I suffer insult for your sake.

When I heard your word, I devoured it.
Your word was my delight and the joy of my heart
for you called me to speak your word.

Reflection:
On the one hand, God's word was Jeremiah's delight....a source of joy
On the other hand, proclaiming God's word was Jeremiah's nightmare ...a source of suffering,
because God's word was not a delight for Jeremiah's listeners ...since they had forgotten God

Prayer: Lord, please increase my love for your word, my love for the Bible...and may that love give me courage to witness to your values

Reading:   Psalm 89

I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord.
Of this I am sure, that your love lasts for ever.

The heavens proclaim your wonders, O Lord.
The heavens are yours, the world is yours.

Blessed the people who find joy in you,
who walk, O Lord, in the light of your face.

Reflection:
As we admire the beauty of the universe,
we cannot but help thinking of the Creator,
just like a beautiful book/film/song makes us think of the author/actor/writer

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for our beautiful universe

Reading:  Acts 24-25

After two years, Felix was succeeded by Festus.
Festus arranged a new trial for Paul

The religious leaders repeated their accusations. Paul repeated his innocence

Festus wanted to gain favor with the leaders so he said to Paul
"Are you willing to go to Jerusalem for a trial with the full council of religious leaders, at which I would preside?"

Paul knew his rights, and stood his ground, not wanting to go to a kangaroo court in Jerusalem.
So he invoked his right as a Roman citizen: "I appeal to Caesar"

Festus replied "You have appealed to Caesar;
to Caesar (Rome) you shall go"

Reflection:
In most countries, citizens have a right to appeal to higher authorities in cases of law.
But in some countries, that right does not exist in practice.

Prayer:
Jesus, please let all countries have a right of appeal for their citizens

Reading: Matthew 27

Joseph from Arimathaea was a rich man who had become a disciple of Jesus.
After Jesus died on Friday, he asked Governor Pilate for Jesus' body.

Joseph wrapped the body in a clean burial cloth and put it in his own new tomb in a rock cave.
He then put a large stone at the cave's entrance.

The next day, Saturday,  the religious leaders went to Pilate and said
"This imposter said he would rise from the dead after 3 days.
Therefore you should secure the tomb in case his disciples steal the body and say he has risen from the dead".

Pilate gave them a guard and told them to secure the tomb.
The guards took up their position at the tomb
and seals were put on the entrance stone.

Reflection:
The Church of the Holy Sepulchre

Prayer: Jesus in the tomb, please give eternal life to everyone who dies today
