Readings for the 10th Sunday of the Year (C)
1st Reading: The prophet Elijah brings a dead boy back to life
Responsorial Psalm: You have raised my soul from the dead
2nd Reading: The call of St Paul from a situation of "spiritual death"
Gospel: Jesus brings a dead man back to life
Reflection:
Some day we all hope to have the
experience of waking up on the other side of death, thanks to Jesus'
Resurrection.
(Since typing the word
"Resurrection" I have just received a phone call from a man whose
mother I anointed in a local hospital a few hours ago ....at about 5pm on
Saturday June 8, HK time. 75 year old mother was in intensive care after a
nearly drowning in a hotel swimming pool, in a deep coma, family had been called by doctor "to
prepare". Son just said mother has started to open one eye each time
someone speaks to her. Doctor said this doesn't normally happen. Son is quietly
confident of further good news. Just before the phone call I was about to type
this:)
Jesus' waking-up power can be seen in
cases of bodily healing and in cases of spiritual healing (when people are
"spiritually dead" or "spiritually sick" and come back to
life/health ....which is why above Gospel is used for the feast of St Augustine
who regarded himself as "spiritually sick" in his younger days
Update HK time 8.45pm Sunday June 9: son just phoned, mother fully awake, able to recognize and communicate with people. Son says it's a miracle. DG! - see report on June 10 menu of this website re "Dicky Cheung's mother"
Prayer: (not
updated)
Dear Jesus, please continue to wake up the
dear mother in hospital, and please heal and wake up people who are spiritually
sick/dead
