 Reading - Reflection - Prayer   July 4, 2013
With readers' comments, below

Reading:  Daniel 1   (more from time when a large number of Jews were exiled in Babylon)

There were many Israelite exiles in Babylon.
The king of Babylon wanted some of them to work in his palace.

The king told his officials to select 4 young men
and train them in local customs and culture.

The 4 selected were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah.
God blessed these 4 with great wisdom.
God also blessed Daniel with the gift of understanding dreams.

When the 4 began work for the king,
they were much wiser than all the local officials.

Reflection:
Please have a quick look at this introduction to Daniel (even just the first section).
Helps us better understand this book of the Bible

Prayer:
Lord, please give us the gift of wisdom, as you gave it to Daniel and his friends

Reading:  Psalm 112

Happy are people who love and honor the Lord,
who take delight in his commands.
The children of such people will be blessed.

Such people are a light in the darkness for others.
Such people are generous, merciful and just.

They take pity and help those in need.
They conduct their affairs with  integrity.

Open-handed they give to the poor.
Their justice and goodness will never be forgotten.

Reflection:
Again and again the Old Testament repeats the message that a good Jew, a good person, is one who cares about the poor. Not just someone who says lots of prayers and observes special feast days .... that is good, but it should go hand in hand with concern for the poor...otherwise it's not the real goodness.  Pope Francis now saying the same thing: "help the poor"

Prayer:  Lord, please help me do more for the poor

Reading:  Romans 8

When we are not sure of what to say in prayer,
we ask the Spirit to  pray in us

We know that by turning everything to their good,
God blesses everyone who loves him

God the Father wants us to become living images of his Son,
so that his Son will be
the eldest of many brothers and sisters

Reflection:
Question for children: What do you want to be when you get older?   (..doctor, nurse, cook, teacher, technician etc ...?)
Best answer: I want to be more like Jesus !

Prayer: Jesus, brother Jesus, please help me to be more like you

Reading: Mark 6

Jesus went on a teaching tour of  the nearby villages.
He sent out  his 12 special friends in 6
pairs, with authority over evil spirits.

He told them to take only bare essentials for the journey.
He said "If any place does not welcome you,
as you leave that place shake the dust from your feet as a sign to them".

The 12 apostles  preached repentance. They cast out many devils.
They anointed sick people with oil and healed them.

A lovely Reflection: Two by two

Prayer: Jesus, may every place welcome you and your messengers
