 Reading - Reflection - Prayer   July 5, 2013
With readers' comments, below

  Reading:  Daniel 2, 3

The king of Babylon had a dream
which none of his wise men could interpret.

God enabled Daniel to understand the dream.
The king then promoted Daniel and his friends to important jobs.

Some time after this, the king built a golden statue
and everyone was commanded to adore it.

The Jewish exiles, including Daniel and his friends,
refused to adore the statue.

Daniel and his friends were condemned to be burnt to death
in a big furnace.

But God protected the four young  men
and they walked around
unhurt in the flames.

They praised God for his wonderful protection
and called on all creatures to adore the one true God.

When the king saw this miracle take place
he cancelled the law for Jews to be killed.

Reflection:
More than one writer has compared the four young men unhurt by the flames of the fire
with young people unhurt by the flames of pornography, drugs etc in today's society
....thanks to their own or someone else's prayers

Prayer:
God, please protect young people from bad influences
....just as you protected Daniel and friends from the flames of the fire

Reading:  Psalm 113

Praise, O friends of the Lord,
praise the name of the Lord.

May the name of the Lord be blessed
both now and for evermore.

From the rising of the sun to its setting
praised be the name of the Lord.

Who is like the Lord our God,
above the heavens his glory.

From the dust he lifts up the lowly,
to put them in the company of royalty.

To the childless wife he gives a home
and gladdens her heart with children.

Reflection:
One of the best things we can do, we should do:
praise God at
sunrise (= some Bible reading and prayer in the morning)
and at
sunset (= some Bible reading and prayer in the evening)

Prayer: Dear God, please help me make a bit of time for Bible reading and prayer in the morning
....and in the evening

Reading:  Romans 8

Nothing can separate us from the love of Jesus, even if we are in big trouble of any kind

By the power of Jesus who loves us, we can get through any trouble

Reflection:
No mess is too big for Jesus to clean up.
His love is an unlimited company

Prayer: Jesus, when I am in trouble, please help me remember your love

Reading: Mark 6

Not long after Jesus began traveling and teaching,
King Herod arrested John the Baptist and put him in prison.

This was because John had told Herod he was breaking the Law
by living with Herodias,  his brother's wife.

During a birthday party for Herod,
the daughter of Herodias danced.

Her dancing so pleased Herod
that he said he would give her anything she wanted.

Herodias told her to ask for the head of John the Baptist on a dish.
Herod then had John beheaded.

A lovely Reflection:
Corrupt leaders like Herod have been around since the beginning of the world
....and they will probably be around until the end of the world.
The New Testament encourages Christians to pray each day for their government leaders
...pray that they  be protected from corruption ....as the four young men in the furnace were protected from the flames

Prayer: Jesus, please give the world good leaders,
and protect people from bad leaders like Herod
