 Reading - Reflection - Prayer   July 6, 2013
With readers' comments, below

  Reading:  Daniel 4-6

Some of the king's officials were jealous of Daniel,
so they had him arrested on a false charge and condemned to death.

One evening, Daniel was put into a cave of lions.
The mouth of the cave was sealed with a great stone.

In the cave Daniel prayed to God for help,
and God protected Daniel.

The next morning the stone was removed.
Daniel walked out unharmed.

The king then ordered Daniel's accusers to be put into the cave.
The lions immediately ate them.

Reflection:
"Cave of lions" can be understood metaphorically to mean any dangerous situation
...e.g. friends who are into drugs.  God can protect us in such a situation

Prayer:
Thank you, Lord, for protecting Daniel. Thank you, Lord, for so often protecting me

Reading:  Psalms 114, 115

When Israel came out of Egypt,
Jacob's descendents from an alien people,

Judah became the Lord's temple,
Israel became his kingdom.

Descendents of Israel, trust in the Lord.
He is our help and our shield.

To you may the Lord grant increase,
to you and all your children.

May you be blessed by the Lord,
the maker of heaven and earth.

Reflection:
The writers of the psalms often combined two themes, as in this psalm:
God's goodness to Israel  + make sure future generations know about that goodness

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for all your goodness.
Please help us pass on to future generations the knowledge of your goodness

Reading:  Romans 9

There is a great sorrow in my heart. It's with me day and night.
It's the situation of the Jewish people, how they will not accept the Anointed One

I am willing to do anything to help them accept Jesus.
I am willing to undergo the greatest suffering if that would help them believe

They are my nation, my family. They have been so blessed by God.
From their flesh and blood came Christ, who is God

Reflection:
Sometimes one person in a family becomes a Christian, and longs for the day when other members of the family also are Christians ....just like Paul longing for the Jewish people to accept Jesus

Prayer: Jesus, God-made-flesh, I pray with Paul that the Jewish people will believe in you,
and I pray that "non-Christian" members of my family soon become Christians

Reading: Mark 6

Once after Jesus had been healing and teaching many people all afternoon,  his disciples said to him
"It's getting late and the people need to go and eat".

Jesus replied "They don't need to go. You feed them".
The disciples replied "We have only 5 loaves and 2 fish".

Jesus got the people to sit on the grass.
There were about 20,000 of them.
Then he blessed the loaves and fish.

He handed the loaves and fish to his disciples.
His disciples gave them to the crowd.

Everyone had plenty to eat.
They even had 12 baskets of leftovers.

A lovely Reflection:
The miracle of the rubbish dump

Prayer: Jesus, please make more people care about the starving people of the world
