Readings for Feast of Saint James, apostle
1st Reading: An apostle, like James, is "a dead man walking"....for the sake of the Gospel (c.f. the movie: Dead Man Walking)
Responsorial Psalm: Apostles "sow in tears" ( = suffering, difficulties, martyrdom)
Gospel: Jesus predicts the suffering of James and John
Reflection:
James was killed by King Herod c. 44 AD (Acts 12.2)
Why did Herod kill James as a first preference? (and see the comments, espy the one re "why no replacement for James, as for Judas?")
Prayer:
Jesus, following the custom of praying for
bishops on the feasts of apostles,
I ask you to give all bishops more and more courage and wisdom in witnessing to
you
