  Reading:  Numbers 26-27

Moses made a census of all the men in the community.
The total number was 624,730.

Moses also gave a ruling concerning inheritance:
"If a man dies without sons,
his inheritance is to pass to his daughters.

If he has no daughter, the inheritance is to go to his brothers.
If he has no brother,
it is to go to his father's brothers.
If his father has no brothers,
it is to go to the member of his clan who is his closest relative".

As Moses neared the end of his life,
he asked God for someone to succeed him as leader.

God answered:
"Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom the spirit dwells.
Lay your hands on him, then bring him before Eleazar the priest
and the whole community so that everyone will obey him".

Reflection:
How many leaders in the world today are people "in whom the spirit dwells"?

Prayer:  Dear Holy Spirit, please increase your influence in the lives of world leaders.  May leaders be people in whom you dwell

Reading: Psalm 133

How good and how pleasant it is
when people live in unity.

It is like precious oil upon the head,
running down upon the beard.

It is like the dew of Hermon
which falls on the heights of Zion.

For there the Lord gives his blessing,
life for ever.

Reflection:
When a family, a group of friends, a work group, a team of volunteers, any group....is united and peaceful....what a blessing!

Prayer: Dear Lord, please help all the peoples of the world to live as one family, in unity.

Reading:  2 Timothy 2

You have heard everything I teach in public. Hand it on to reliable people so that they in turn will be able to teach others

Put up with your share of difficulties like a good soldier of Christ Jesus, like an athlete who keeps all the rules, like a hard-working farmer

Remember the Good News that I carry: "Jesus Christ risen from the dead, sprung from the race of David"

On account of this Good News I am chained up like a criminal.
But no-one can chain up the Good News

Reflection:
When Paul wrote the above words, he was in prison.
Today, Jan 10, 2014, there are many thousands of people in prison for being Christians. Let us often remember them ....as in the daily prayer for prisoners in one part of China (at bottom of each day's menu of this site)

Prayer:
Jesus, help people who are in prison on account of the Good News

Reading:  Luke 22

After the Passover meal, Jesus and his disciples went to the Mount of Olives. Jesus said to them "Pray for protection in time of trial"

Then he went apart by himself, about 40 meters away,  knelt down and prayed "Father, save me from this time of trial. But let your will, not mine, be done"

An angel from heaven appeared to him to give him strength. His agony was so great that his sweat became drops of blood falling to the ground

When he got up and went to the disciples, he found them sleeping - so overcome with sorrow were they

Reflection:
It's not easy to pray when the world collapses around us, when we experience a time of trial (...trials re health, relationships, bereavement, employment etc )

Prayer: Jesus, please save us in time of trial
