  Reading:  Deuteronomy 8

Moses continued his speech to the people:

"Remember how the Lord your God
led you for 40 years in the wilderness,
to humble you, to test you, to know your inmost heart
- whether you would keep his commandments or not.

He humbled you, he fed you with manna,
to make you understand that man does not live on bread alone
but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.

Learn from this that the Lord your God was training you
as a man trains his child.

Keep the commandments of the Lord your God.
Follow his ways and reverence him.

When you become prosperous in the land that God is giving you,
do not become proud and say your own efforts have brought you success.

Take care and do not forget the Lord your God
."

Reflection:
Success can easily make us proud (c.f. some tennis players!)
but notice how the best people remain humble when they become successful (Pope Francis, Mother Teresa, Roger Federer, Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi)

Prayer:
Dear Lord, please keep us humble in times of success

Reading: Psalm  145

I will give you glory, O God my king.
I will bless your name day after day.

The Lord is great, worthy of all praise.
His greatness cannot be measured.

Age to age shall proclaim your works,
shall speak of your splendor and glory.

The Lord is kind and full of compassion,
slow to anger, abounding in love.

How good is the Lord to all,
compassionate to all his creatures.

All your creatures shall thank you, O Lord,
and tell all the world of your love.

The Lord is faithful in all his words
and loving in all his deeds.

The Lord supports all who fall
and raises all who are bowed down.

The eyes of all creatures look to you
and you give them their food each day.

The Lord is close to all who call him,
who call on him from their hearts.

Let the whole world bless the Lord's holy name,
for ever, for ages unending.

Reflection:
When a parent or spouse is dying, the one thing children or spouse say is "thank you for your love".
That sums up everything else.
Same with God.
And as we get older, we pray more simply in words that sum up everything else:

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for your love. Thank you for your love

Reading:  Titus 3

Remind everyone to be obedient to government officials; to be ready to do good at every opportunity; not to go slandering other people or picking quarrels; to be courteous and polite to everyone

There was a time when we too were ignorant; when we lived in wickedness and ill-will, hating each other and hateful ourselves

But then the kindness and love of God our Saviour were revealed, and God saved us because of his compassion

God saved us by the cleansing water of rebirth, and by renewing us with the Holy Spirit whom he has poured over us through Jesus Christ our Saviour

So we are justified by his grace, and look forward to eternal life

Reflection:
The first paragraph above means that Christians should be the best citizens.

Prayer:  Jesus, please help all Christians be good citizens

Reading:  Luke 23

At about midday, there was an eclipse of the sun.
The whole land was in darkness until about 3pm

The veil of the Temple was torn right down the middle

Jesus cried out in a loud voice "Father, into your hands I entrust my life".  Then he died

When the Roman army leader saw what had happened,
he said "This was a great and good man"

The people who had been present went home asking God for mercy. Jesus' friends stood at a distance and saw all that had happened

Reflection:
Jesus' death is like that of a parent. When a parent dies, we feel numbed ....words don't come easily ...words seem so feeble and useless.  We are grateful for all they did for us. We wish we had loved them better

Prayer: Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for the salvation of the world. Please help us love you better
