  Reading:  Deuteronomy 11

Moses continued his speech to the people:

"You must love the Lord your God.

Remember this day, how it was you who heard these words,
not your children.

It is your eyes that have seen the great works God has done.

Keep the Lord's commandments,
so that you may have strength to conquer the land God is giving you.

That land is a land of hills and valleys watered by rain from heaven.

If you love the Lord your God with all your heart
the Lord will give your land its rain in due season,
autumn and spring,
so that you may harvest your corn, your wine and your oil.

But if you forget the Lord your God and worship other gods,
then the heavens will be closed and produce no rain.

See, I set before you today a blessing and a curse:
a blessing if you obey the commandments of the Lord our God;
a curse if you disobey the commandments of the Lord our God
."

Reflection:
Good behaviour brings blessings (... good parents are a blessing for their children). Bad behaviour brings hardships (....irresposible parents cause problems for their children

Prayer:
Dear Lord, please help us to obey you and never forget you,
and please give rain to places that urgently need it

Reading: Psalm  148

Praise the Lord from the heavens,
praise him in the heights.

Praise him all his angels,
praise him all his spirits.

Praise him, sun and moon,
praise him, shining stars.

Let them praise the name of the Lord.
His word gave life to all of them.

Praise the Lord from the earth,
sea creatures and all oceans.

Praise him fire and hail, snow and mist,
stormy winds that obey his word.

Praise him all mountains and hills,
all fruit trees and cedars.

Praise him all animals, wild and tame,
reptiles and birds in the air.

Praise him all earth's kings and peoples,
earth's princes and rulers.

Praise him young men and maidens,
old people together with children.

Let them praise the name of the Lord.
He is the praise of all who love him.

Reflection:
We praise movie stars, pop stars and sports stars....but way and above all of these
we should praise the One who made the stars of heaven

Prayer: Lord our God and Creator, you are worthy of all praise

Reading:  Philomen

While here in prison, I have helped someone you know
to become a believer. He is carrying this letter - Onesimus

I'm sending him back to you, no longer your slave,
but your brother in Christ

Please welcome him as you would welcome me.
And let me pay for anything he stole from you

May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you

Reflection:
A runaway slave, Onesimus, asked Paul's help.
Paul was someone who didn't just talk about helping others, but actually did help others ....as in this case, and as in the collection he took up for the poor in Jerusalem

Prayer:  Jesus, may I be someone who helps the poor with actions and not just words

Reading:  Luke 24

That same day, two of Jesus' disciples were on their way from Jerusalem to the village of Emmaus, about 7 km from Jerusalem

As they talked about all that had happened, Jesus himself joined them as they walked along. But they did not recognize him

When Jesus asked them what they were talking about, they said "About Jesus of Nazareth,  and how our leaders had him crucified. And how some women in our group went to Jesus' tomb and were told by angels that he was alive"

Jesus then explained the Scripture passages which predicted his suffering and resurrection

Jesus joined the two men for an evening meal. During the meal,
he blessed  some bread and gave it to them. They then recognized him. But he immediately vanished from their sight

They said to each other "Did not our hearts burn within us as he talked to us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?"

Straight away they returned to Jerusalem where the eleven apostles said to them "Yes, it is true. The Lord has risen"

Then they told their story of what had happened on the road, and how they had  recognized Jesus at the breaking of bread

Reflection:
Why is it that so often when the Scriptures are explained we feel unmoved or even bored?  Our fault? Fault of person speaking?
A bit of both?

Prayer: Jesus, please make my heart burn within me as I read the Bible
