  Reading:  Deuteronomy 14-15

Moses' teaching:

"At the end of every 7 years, you must cancel all debts.

If there is a poor person among you,
do not harden your heart or close your hand against that person.

Always be generous to anyone in need
."

Reflection:
Can someone please tell me: in ancient Buddhist, Confucian, Hindu and other writings.....is there such an emphasis on helping the poor, as is found in the Old Testament?  Pope Francis' emphasis on the poor is causing me to notice more than previously how the Old Testament is full of references to helping the poor

Prayer:
Dear Lord, make me more generous towards poor people

Reading: Psalm 1

Happy the person who avoids evil and evil entertainment.
Happy the person who reads and meditates on God's words.

Such a person is like a tree planted beside a river, getting plenty of nourishment, bearing plenty of fruit.

Such a person is on the Way of Life.
People who do evil are on the Way of Death.

Reflection:
Our basic choice: Life or death, good or evil

Prayer: Dear Lord, please help us do good and avoid evil

Reading:  Hebrews 2

The Son did not become an angel.
He became a man, so that he could die for us

By his death he took away the power of the devil

He himself experienced temptation.
He is able to help us when we are tempted

Reflection:
The best people to help drug addicts are "reformed" drug addicts ....who have themselves experienced the overwhelming compulsiveness of drug addiction

Prayer:
Jesus, please help me when I am tempted to do something wrong

Reading:  Luke 24

Jesus then took his disciples out of Jerusalem to the village of Bethany

Lifting up his hands, he blessed them.
As he blessed them, he was carried up to heaven

They worshipped him, then went back to Jerusalem full of joy

They were continually in the Temple praising God

Reflection:
This final reading from Luke's Gospel finishes on a theme that runs right through the Gospel:  joy and praise

Prayer: Jesus, thank you for the Gospel of Luke. Please increase my faith in you as the One who came down from heaven, and went back to heaven
