O Holy Spirit, may these passages give us hope, wisdom, compassion, courage and peace for our daily life           Chinese text

  Reading:  Deuteronomy 29-30

Moses called the whole of Israel together and said to them:

"Keep the words of this covenant and observe them
and you will thrive in all you do.

Let there be no man or woman among you,
no clan or tribe, whose heart turns away from the Lord your God
to go and serve the gods of the nations.

If ever you are scattered from the land God is giving you,
God will bring you back when your hearts turn back to him.

The Lord will circumcise your hearts
until you love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul.

This law I enjoin on you today is not beyond your strength
or beyond your reach.

It is not in heaven, so that you need to wonder
'who will go up to heaven for us and bring it down to us
so that we may hear it and keep it?'

Nor is it beyond the seas, so that you need to wonder
'who will cross the sea for us and bring it back to us,
so that we may hear it and keep it?'

No,
the Word is very near to you.
It is in your mouth and in your heart for your observance.

Reflection:
If we received a phone call from Pope Francis or President Obama, we'd cherish every word of the conversation. How much more should we cherish the Word of God, the Message of God, as recorded in the Bible?

Prayer:
Dear God, please increase my love for your Message in the Bible

Reading: Psalm 8

How great is your name, O Lord our God,
through all the earth.

When I see the heavens, the work of your hands,
the moon and stars which you have arranged,
then I stop and think:
what are we insignificant humans that you should care about us?

Yet you have put us in charge of the world.
Everything is subject to our control.

Reflection:
The famous philosopher Immanuel Kant once said
"Two things awe me most: the starry sky above me and the moral law within me"

Prayer: How great is your name, O Lord our God, through all the earth

Reading:  Hebrews 10

Jesus is the supreme High Priest of the whole house of God.
As we enter that house, let us have sincere hearts that are filled with faith and hope

Let us be concerned for each other,
encouraging each other to do good

Do not stay away from the meetings as some people do,
but encourage each other to attend

Reflection:
Hebrews was written for Christians who had started to lose hope, lose enthusiasm, had even stopped going to (house church) meetings (= the Eucharist?).  Same problem today: many Christians have stopped going regularly to church.  Hebrews gentle advice: "encourage each other to attend"

Prayer:  Jesus, please help "stopped" Christians to "start" again

Reading:  John 3

A religious leader said to Jesus "you are a teacher who comes from God, for no one could perform the signs that you do unless God were with him"

Jesus replied "Unless you are born through water and the Spirit,
you cannot enter God's kingdom"

Reflection:
Baptism by water is the ideal, God's Plan A, but there's also a Plan B, called Anonymous Christianity

Prayer:  Jesus, please help more people be baptized through water and the Spirit
