O Holy Spirit, may these passages give us hope, wisdom, compassion, courage and peace for our daily life           Chinese text

  Reading:  Joshua 1

God said to Joshua:

"I will be with you, as I was with Moses.
I will not leave you or abandon you.

Be strong and stand firm
and be careful to keep all the Law
which my servant Moses laid on you.

Never swerve from this to right or left,
and then you will be happy in all you do.

Have the book of this Law always on your lips.
Meditate on it day and night,
so that you may carefully keep
everything that is written in it.

Be fearless, be confident,
for wherever you go
I the Lord your God am with you."

Then Joshua said to the people:
"Get ready, for in 3 days you will cross the Jordan River
and take possession of the land
which God is giving to you."

Reflection:
We can't be 100% sure of God's exact words to Joshua (... no doubt the above words have been "magnified" by various editors ...) but we can be sure that Joshua's confidence (a theme of the whole Book of Joshua) came not from himself but from God, God who missioned him to lead the people

Prayer:
Dear God,  thank you for the courage and confidence
that serving you gives us

Reading: Psalms 17-18

Lord,  when trouble breaks out on every side,
please protect and help me.

For you are my strength, my rock, my fortress, my savior.
I love you, Lord who save me because you love me.

Lord, you are my lamp who lightens my life.
I will praise you among the nations.

Reflection:
God helps us and saves us not for money or power....but because he loves us.
Just as parents help their children not for money or power....but for love

Prayer:  Lord, thank you for loving and helping us

Reading:  James 1

From James, servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Greetings to believers scattered around the world

You will always have difficulties and things going wrong.
When they happen,
praise God for them and patiently keep going

Blessed are people who stand firm when trials come. They have proved themselves, and will win the prize of eternal life which the Lord has promised to those who love him

Reflection:
The idea of praising God for difficulties (also found in St Paul's writings) sounds crazy at first, but people like Merlin Carothers show how praise works (in the 19,000,000 copies of his published books)

Prayer:  Jesus, please give me patience and praise when life gets tough

Reading:  John 4

Jesus went again to Cana in Galilee, where he had changed water into wine. In Cana  there was a royal official whose son was dying in his home in the town of Capernaum

The official asked Jesus to go to his home and cure his son.
"Sir", he said to Jesus, "come to my house before my child dies".
Jesus replied "Go home. Your son will live"

The official believed Jesus and started his journey home. While on the journey,  he was met by his servants who told him the boy was alive and well.  "The fever left him yesterday, they said, "at  1pm"

The father realized that this was the exact time when Jesus had said "Your son will live".  The official and all his household then believed in Jesus

Reflection:
As for Jesus, so for anyone: we don't have to be in someone's presence to pray for them. We can pray for them at a distance. (And one tip from Agnes Sanford re praying at a distance for sick people: don't picture them as sick, but as well!)

Prayer:
Jesus, (..name..) is sick.  Please heal him/her
