Reading:  Joshua 9

After hearing that the Israelites had captured Jericho and Ai,
other peoples of the region formed an alliance
to fight against the Israelites.

But the people of Gibeon used another strategy:
they tricked the Israelites into thinking
they were not locals but had come from far away.

So the Israelites made a treaty with them.

When the Israelites realized they had been tricked,
they kept their side of the bargain and did not attack Gibeon.

Instead the Gibeonites became wood-cutters and water-carriers
in the service of the Israelites.

Reflection:
Let's pray today that Israel will make a treaty with more nations of the present day

Prayer:
Dear Lord, please help nations to make treaties instead of war

Reading: Psalms 29, 30

The Lord gives us strength, the Lord blesses us with peace.

Thank you, Lord, for so often helping and healing me.
I cried to you when sickness surrounded me, and you healed me.

You  changed my mourning into dancing.
So I will thank you always.

Reflection:
King David, or whoever wrote these psalms, believed in Heavenly healing!

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for all the times you have healed me

Reading:  James 4

Avoid talking like this: "Tomorrow I'm going to another town, to do business there for a year "

You don't know what will happen tomorrow. You are no more than a mist that is here for a little while, then disappears

What you should say is: "If it's the Lord's will, tomorrow I'm going to another town for a year"

Reflection:
"Please God" is a very common saying in Ireland

Prayer:  Jesus, help me to remember to say to people: "God willing, I will see you next month" or "Please God, I will see you next month", rather than just "I'll see you next month"

Reading:  John 6

The people criticized  Jesus saying "We know his father and mother. How can he say he has come down from heaven?"

Jesus replied "I am the bread of life. If you eat this bread which has come down from heaven, you will live forever

I am the living bread which has come down from heaven.
Anyone who eats this bread will live for ever

And the bread that I will give is my flesh, for the life of the world"

Reflection:
In Hong Kong the shops sell "Life Bread". I usually hold up a loaf of it when giving a homily on the above verses.  Jesus is more than Life Bread. He is "Living, Alive, Life Bread"

Prayer: Jesus, living bread come down from heaven, please help me understand how you give your flesh for the life of the world
